Lady in the Water

Non-spoiler Review

I find myself frustrated and confused by M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film, Lady in the Water. Not by the film itself actually, as many critics seemed to have been, but by the behavior of film critics themselves. I had the same reaction with Peter Jackson’s remake of King Kong. I could respect the criticisms of amatuer and paid critics who just did not like the film. What I could not fathom was those reviewers who could not get past their own opinion that Jackson should not have done a remake but should have done something new and different. The same thing has happened with about 50% of the negative reviews I have read about Lady in the Water.

Friday Favorites: Adam Rex

Since last week’s post was slightly more adult in nature I thought I’d balance my karma with something more child friendly for this week’s Friday Favorite, Adam Rex.

(Doh! Missed this holiday!)

I love children’s book illustration. Some of my favorite artists illustrate books for children and young adults and it is an occupation that I highly regard and am quite jealous of.

Upcoming Films

With the summer blockbusters essentially over for the year, it is time to look for interesting, possibly smaller films to fill my movie-going needs. Of course Lady in the Water is this weekend and although I’m really looking forward to it I’m not sure I’d classify it as a blockbuster. Here are a few other films that look to be interesting:

We saw the trailer for The Science of Sleep at the preview of A Scanner Darkly last week. It appears to be a quirky, independent film from the makers of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a film that I thoroughly enjoyed. The Science of Sleep looks to have some fantastic dream sequences that mimic the equally amazing mind sequences of Eternal Sunshine. This one is slated for September 15th release. Trailer here.

The Illusionist is a film that I came across while watching movie trailers. With its phenomenal cast (Paul Giamatti, Edward Norton, Jessica Biel, and Rufus Sewell) and the slightly eerie feel of the trailer it is a film that I am anticipating seeing in the theatre. The Illusionist is from the film makers who brought Sideways and Crash to the big screen so hopefully they will continue with their run of well written films. You can click on the site here and the trailer will start automatically.

Only two more days to the weekend (and Lady in the Water!) and possibly only one more day of 100+ temperatures…for now. Never thought I would look forward to a 90 degree day!

Tuesday Distractions

It is unfortunately far from the weekend and the weather here is hovering around the century mark which is frankly quite miserable. So here are a few things to distract you from the midsummer heat and not-yet-midweek blues.

Mike Mignola, creator of the incomparable Hellboy comics, did a one-shot story a few years back entitled The Amazing Screw-On Head. It was a fun, tongue-in-cheek story featuring the titular Screw-On Head as an American super agent, fighting evil during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln. With Mignola’s blessing this steampunk adventure has been animated. You can see the pilot episode in its entirety here on Sci-Fi. The show features the vocal talents of Paul Giamatti, David Hyde Pierce, and Molly Shannon. The show is quite well done and very funny in spots. They captured the look of Mignola’s art perfectly and the show had the mood that I hoped it would. I really hope they make more.

I’m not one to forward on silly emails. Once in awhile, however, something comes along that is too entertaining to pass up. If you enjoy Career Builder’s chimpanzee commercials, first featured during the last Superbowl, you’ll really enjoy their Monk-e-mail service. You can pick your chimp, outfit him or her with a number of outfits and accessories, pick a background, and get ready for your message. The message is the fun part. Choose “text to speech” and type your message. You can pick one of four voices. It is a computer generated voice program so the way in which it pronounces things adds to the hilarity. I recommend double spacing between each sentence. That way the program pauses somewhat and you can understand what the monkey is saying. Numerous people have already received Monk-e-mails from me and I apologize profusely, I just couldn’t resist.

Well, that’s it. Just wanted to give you a little something to occupy your day. If you happen to watch The Amazing Screw-On Head you’ll notice a similarity between the two time wasters: monkeys! Hope everyone has a marvelous Tuesday!

Friday Favorites: Shane Glines

Drawing inspiration from the joy of discovering Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang and revisiting my Robert McGinnis post I bring you the work of Shane Glines.

I discovered the work of Shane Glines several years ago and became an instant fan. The work featured on his website is primarily of the good girl variety and much of it reminds me the noir cover art of McGinnis done 50’s cartoon style.
