Friday Favorites: Adam Rex

Since last week’s post was slightly more adult in nature I thought I’d balance my karma with something more child friendly for this week’s Friday Favorite, Adam Rex.

(Doh! Missed this holiday!)

I love children’s book illustration. Some of my favorite artists illustrate books for children and young adults and it is an occupation that I highly regard and am quite jealous of.

This illustration is from Adam’s book Tree Ring Circus. You can see here what happens if you let a situation like this get out of hand.

Adam Rex’s illustration has a colored pencil feel to it. There is texture there, the colors aren’t flat. One thing that many of the Friday Favorite authors have in common is the use of vivid colors, Adam Rex is no exception.

(Love the reds in this)

Adam Rex’s website is a visual feast all its own in which you can let the chicken guide you to illustration for kids, teens and adults.

Like many artists that I enjoy Adam Rex has a slightly dark side that comes out in some of his illustrations.

In addition to both writing and illustrating children’s books, Adam Rex has done some really fantastic fantasy illustration.

Many of the fantasy illustrations are images done for the company Wizards of the Coast.

It always amazes me when artists paint and can bring such depth and life to their work.

(Come on, you know you want to click it. The detail is amazing)

(Click, love the hue of the lighting in this one)

Yes, Adam Rex is a very fun illustrator. Check out his website for many more terrific works. The website itself is very fun and worth a look.

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend. It has been one month since Jenn See passed away. A day hasn’t gone by when I haven’t missed her posts and comments, her ‘presence’ on the internet. I appreciate that Oldben and Mysfit are keeping the fish alive in her absence. I continue to keep them and her mother Cynthia in my prayers and I hope you do the same. Enjoy yourselves, enjoy each other, and be creative with the time you have.

And just for the sake of symmetry, I’ll end with an obligatory robot picture.

  1. Wonderful artist. Thanks for the Friday morning lift. I needed it.

I love the red sheen on the Spider magazine cover and the results of the Tree Ring circus was cute too. As for the June 1st holiday. I’m all for it. Just one more holiday we can make greeting cards for! 🙂

  2. Me too. I love trees period so any books or art that has trees in it makes it that much better in my book and I love the very fun idea of this one.

  3. I think I have to go with Suzanne. I love teh tree ring circus. I also adore the spider cover.

  4. How wonderful his art is. It makes ones fell warm and cozy just looking at them. The feathers on the bird are incredible. When I read what you said about Jenn See I thought what an impact she left on your life. That’s quite a legacy she left.

  5. The Spider magazine cover is gorgeous. Really liking his work – looks vaguely familiar although I didn’t know the name – probably on account of the WoTC link.

Friday Favourites is a great feature – am enjoying looking through the archives. 🙂

  6. I am enjoying doing the Friday Favorites immensely. Some of his work looks a bit like Jon Foster’s. I think its more of the fact that there is a similarity in tone in the paintings than anything.
