Fellowship

“The soul is born old but grows young. That is the comedy of life. And the body is born young and grows old. That is life’s tragedy.”

~Oscar Wilde

When the otherworldly chimes of my cell phone alarm woke me this Tuesday morning, I did not leap out of bed waving Anduril over my head.

I groaned.

I moaned.

And I stumbled out of bed with thoughts of dread about the long day ahead of me. This was Fellowship of the Ring day, and I was not excited. That was my age showing. After a work day filled with meetings I arrived home with 4 hours to spare before film time. I pulled up my computer, looked at a few Lord of the Rings related images in contemplation of this post, and felt my young soul grow a bit younger. The excitement of the evening ahead literally came upon me in a matter of seconds–it washed completely over me and I realized that I just could not wait any longer and that I had to get to the theater.

I arrived with 3 hours to spare, walked right into the theater (bless AMC for leaving that theater open all day and allowing fans to arrive and go straight in), and had my pick of any seat in the place.

I was the only one there. For approximately two hours. And it was lovely! I grabbed a soda and some peanut M&M’s, settled down with a book, and read in complete and total silence for two hours. I was relaxed and primed for a night of magic.

Anya’s Ghost ~Vera Brosgol

Anya’s Ghost ~Vera Brosgol

–published 2011
–First Second Books
–221 pages
–9/10

Navigating the tumultuous waters of adolescence is difficult enough in a typical American high school. For Russian-born Anya Borzakovskaya those difficulties are compounded by a last name and a culture that she works hard to distance herself from. What successes she has gained in the battle to “fit in” are put in daily peril by body image issues, poor school performance, and the presence of another Russian student, Dima, a prototypical nerd with a thick Russian accent who regularly tries to befriend her. One day when familial and school obligations threaten to overwhelm her, Anya decides to take a walk in the park, wherein she discovers, quite by accident, an old well. Things go from bad to worse when she discovers the bones of the last person to stumble across the well and with them, a ghost.

In her debut book, Anya’s Ghost, author/artist Vera Brosgol combines clean lines and subtle retro-styling with tight prose to tell a compelling and sometimes mysterious tale about a young girl’s journey towards becoming herself.

Several years ago I recall poo-pooing the concept of the book trailer. Experience has taught me that the quality of those early trailers had a lot to do with my assumptions about their value and effectiveness. That said, I had not been swayed to buy a book based on a book trailer. That all changed when the trailer for Ransom Riggs’ debut novel found its way to me on Twitter.

I watched it…

And I was lost…

A Charles de Lint Six Pack

This week Kailana and I tackle 6 more stories from The Very Best of Charles de Lint. The stories we discuss are:

‘In the Pines’
‘Pixel Pixies’
‘Many Worlds are Born Tonight’
‘Sisters’
‘Pal o’ Mine’
That Was Radio Clash’

As in previous posts our discussions generally hit topics that can be weighed in on even if you have not read that particular short story, so please feel welcome to share your thoughts about any or all of the areas we touch on. The first 3 stories were mine to develop questions for, the last three were Kailana’s.

And away we go:

Geek Status Reaffirmed

It all starts a week from tonight! I cannot wait. For the rest of the Tuesday nights in June I will be in nerd heaven…nerdvana?

The Extended Editions on the BIG SCREEN. I am particularly excited about:

“The events will begin with a new and personal introduction for each film from The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson captured from the set of his current film, and The Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit“

These are going to be some late nights! Perhaps I can salvage some of my sleep time if I wear my Aragorn Underoos and Hobbit-feet slippers to the theater?
