Fragile Things Group Read, The Conclusion

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. I’m glad that we are ending them together.

It has been a tremendous pleasure to spend the last eight weeks with you fine folk, praising and criticizing, dissecting and devouring the short fiction and poetry of Neil Gaiman.

The first time I read and reviewed the Fragile Things collection I wrote:

“Short story collections are something of an enigma. I have read a fair number of short story collections this year, and while some were fantastic from start to finish others contained stories ranging from the very good to the very average. Fragile Things occupies this latter category.”

My opinion of some of the stories in this collection changed in the positive direction when I later purchased the audio version of Fragile Things, but by and large I still agree with my initial assessment of this book. It has some of the very best examples of Neil Gaiman’s tremendous talent in the short story medium. And it contains examples of the things I just don’t care for in Neil’s writing. And there are some that fall squarely in between. There are more stories and poems that I like than those that I don’t and I do find myself coming back to various stories in the collection every few years come autumn.

I do appreciate everyone’s dedicated participation. This extra wrinkle in the R.I.P. Challenge has been so much fun.

And now, let us come to the end.

The Lantern Group Read, the Conclusion

Can you believe that October is nearly over? And with it comes the ending of another wonderful R.I.P. Challenge. But I will not lament that end just yet, as we still have a bit of time left to experience a peril or two. Today does mark the end of our group discussion for Deborah Lawrenson’s debut book, The Lantern. It has been a great pleasure reading and discussing this book over the past few weeks.

I have really enjoyed this contemporary homage to Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca and will certainly be keeping an eye open for more of Lawreson’s work in the future. This last section of the book was full of excitement and revelations and this is likely to be the most spoiler filled discussion post yet.

Let’s get down to it.

Fragile Things Group Read, Week 7

“I suppose I could claim that I had always suspected that the world was a cheap and shoddy sham, a bad cover for something deeper and weirder an infinitely more strange, and that, in some way, I already knew the truth.”

And here we are, the penultimate discussion post for the group read of Neil Gaiman’s short story collection, Fragile Things. After this we have just one poem, two short stories, and a novella left. Hard to believe we are almost done. Thankfully, we have some treats in store for us with what remains.

But before that, we have four stories from this past week’s reading to discuss. I find myself in great anticipation every Sunday to see how you dear readers come out on the week’s selections. So let’s get right down to it.

Look out for spoilers!

The Lantern Group Read, Week Two

“We all tell stories about ourselves, some repeated so often that we can honestly believe them to be the truth. Stories are our self-protective coating. Everyone has them, not only the people who have survived terrible families, though clearly they will have a larger canon than most.

And what narrative had I invented for my life with Dom? There were plenty, I now realized. Nothing important at first, but that’s the thing with stories–like lies, they start small. You play around to see what feels comfortable.”

Our weather this week has been so wonderfully representative of what I want fall to be. The nights have been cool and they create the perfect mood for immersion into Deborah Lawrenson’s novel, The Lantern. I hope everyone else has had time to get lost in the countryside of Southern France this past week.

Kailana supplied the questions for this second of three weeks of discussion. For those of you who are not reading the novel but want to, following along after the jump is something you do not want to do. Spoilers are present in abundance.

Fragile Things Group Read, Week Six

“I love dreams. I know enough about them to know that dream logic is not story logic, and that you can rarely bring a dream back as a tale: it will have transformed from gold into leaves, from silk to cobwebs, on waking.”

~Neil Gaiman
Introduction to “Feeders and Eaters”

As hard as it is to believe, Sunday morning dawns with this, our 6th group discussion of the Fragile Things short story collection. Only two more Sundays to go. I can already tell I am going to miss spending my Sundays with you fine folk, talking about the highs and lows of our immersion into Neil Gaiman’s short fiction.

This week’s stories were fairly short indeed, as are next weeks. A word of advice for those who are reserving each story for the intended week: you might want to read ahead during week 7 as the four stories that make up our final week include a much longer novella.

This week’s reading contained two stories that I think work best when read aloud and I am once again thankful that I decided to revisit the audio collection for this group reading experience.

Spoilers are on the way, let’s go!
