January 2015 Cover Story

It is a new month, in a new year, and that means it is time again to kick off the year with a visual feast of fantastic art that we call Cover Story. The idea is to feature covers of books, magazines, short stories, etc. of the science fiction/fantasy/horror variety slated for release within the featured month.

My regular disclaimer stands as notification that I am not an artist, nor a trained art critic. I know what I like, and feature what catches my eye. I enjoy hearing your opinions, whatever they may be, of the art featured in Cover Story, and am open to suggestions for covers coming out this month that you feel are worth acknowledging.

I see commissioned cover art decreasing when I look at genre releases, and I feel it is important to showcase the artists who continue to get commissions, and the companies that commission their work.

Special thanks to John DeNardo and SF Signal for the post featuring releases in January 2015.

Spectrum 21: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art

spec21coverimage21

November 2014 saw the first fruits of the passing of the torch, with the twenty-first volume of Spectrum: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art being released by Flesk Publications, under the editorial hand of John Fleskes.

After two decades of bringing fans of science fiction, fantasy and horror art a beautiful, comprehensive annual collection of fantastic art, Cathy and Arnie Fenner announced at Spectrum Fantastic Art Live 2(May, 2013), that they were turning over the editing and publication of the Spectrum art annual to John Fleskes.

If you have had the privilege of holding a Flesk art book in your hands, you know that the Fenner’s made a great choice. The purchase and perusal of Spectrum has been one of my favorite annual traditions since volume eight, and I have been excited to see what John Fleskes would do with his first release.

That anticipation was rewarded with a fantastic (pardon the adjective) volume of art. Spectrum 21 maintains the high production values of previous volumes and has a familiar structure while including touches from John Flesk that kick off the book’s third decade with a bang.

Cover Story: December 2014

(Sky Burial, by Wayne Haag. Copyright Wayne Haag)

It has been awhile, I know.

The new feature I began this year, Cover Story, was meant to be monthly and, as of this post, I believe I have done seven out of twelve months.

*Sigh* There is always 2015.

At any rate, welcome to the December 2014 Edition of Cover Story, the monthly feature showcasing genre cover art for works scheduled for publication within (or around) the current month. I do judge books by their covers, at least on the first pass. It was the art on science fiction book covers that drew me in as a young reader, and I believe it is important to promote the artists and designers, and the book companies that employ them, for the efforts made to keep alive the grand tradition of eye-catching genre cover art.

The opening image is by artist Wayne Haag, and is featured, in an edited format, below.

(Monthly Disclaimer: I am not an art critic and have no formal artistic training. “Eye-catching” means exactly what it says, these images caught my eye and drew my attention to the works they grace, compelling me to search out more information about the book. Opinions contrary to mine, and suggestions for works that I missed that caught your eye, are always welcome.)

The December 2014 list is not lengthy, but it is packed with some eye-popping, gorgeous illustrations. Enjoy, and stay tuned near the end of the year for my Favorite Science Fiction and Fantasy Covers of 2014 post…it will be packed!

With those formalities out of the way, let’s get to the cover art, shall we?

July/August 2014 Cover Story

Cover Story is a feature I host here at the beginning of each month which showcases genre cover art for works scheduled for publication within the current month*.

Due to an unplanned break in blogging for most of July, you are getting a double-feature here today! Two great months for the price of one.

The featured image is by artist Wayne Haag. His work graces the cover of the current issue of Interzone. You can read more about it in the post below.

*due to changes that can happen in publication dates, covers featured may have already seen publication prior to the current month or could possibly be delayed.

With those formalities out of the way, let’s get to the cover art, shall we?

Book Review and Giveaway: The Art of Fred Gambino

fredgamb
Today over at SF Signal I review the upcoming art collection by Titan Books, Dark Shepherd: The Art of Fred Gambino.

Gambino has done concept work for films and games for a number of years and this latest book showcases some of that work as well as script samples and artwork from his own personal story project: Dark Shepherd.

Titan Books requested a review from SF Signal, and when John DeNardo showed me the cover for this, I was all over it.

Titan Books has but together a well-crafted collection with vivid, high-resolution images that is well worth taking a look at.

Please check out my review for more examples of his artwork.

The book is due out July 29th, by while you are over at SF Signal you can enter for a chance to win your very own copy well in advance of release day.
