Friday Favorites*: 2009 Sci Fi Cover Art

You may recall that last year at this time, as part of the Sci Fi Experience, I featured cover art that grabbed my attention from the books published in 2008. I enjoy cover illustration so much I thought, why not go back to that well again?!?! So, using Locus Magazine’s 2009 cover gallery as a jumping off point, I reviewed illustrations that graced the covers of science fiction books and magazines last year. Then came the arduous task of choosing which ones to feature. While this is certainly not an exhaustive list of 2009 cover illustrations that I enjoyed, I do think it is a nice representative sample of some of the great genre art that is out there.

This is science fiction focused, so I’ve attempted to stick to illustrations for material that has a SF bent. There were a number of gorgeous fantasy illustrations that I have not included. May have to save that for the fourth annual Once Upon a Time reading challenge in March.

Enough with the banter, let’s get to the art!

Jennifer Gordon takes on Autumn

(Desdemona’s Lonely Song)

Jennifer Gordon is a mixed media artist whose works evoke a sense of longing in me that speaks so perfectly to my mood this time of year. There is a tangible presence of nostalgia and history to each one of her works.

You may recall that Jennifer is one of this year’s R.I.P. IV Challenge sponsors and she graciously allowed the use of her creations for this year’s banner. As a sponsor of R.I.P. IV, Jennifer has created some hauntingly beautiful new things for her shop and has agreed to do something very special just for you!

More about that to come.

I have asked Jennifer Gordon to participate in a two-part interview, the first focusing on the season of autumn, the second on gothic things and All Hallows Eve. If you are interested in the inspirations behind her work, her process, or learning more about Jennifer Gordon as an artist, please take some time to visit my previous interview with her, located here.

Today we are focusing on autumn. Please come along with me as Jennifer Gordon shares her thoughts.

Friday Favorites: Robert A. Maguire

(All images in this post are pictures taken by me of the books that I am reviewing, unless otherwise noted.)

Well before I began budgeting my book purchases I had ordered a number of things through my local comic shop. Back around May, this book, Dames Dolls and Gun Molls: The Art of Robert A. Maguire, serendipitously arrived as I was smack dab in the middle of reading crime/noir/pulp fiction. I wasted no time in reading it, after all it was a beautiful collection of art from an artist whose work I admire. In an effort to catch up on book reviews, it seemed like a splendid idea to wrap this book review around a Friday Favorites post, thus giving you more bang for your buck.

Please join me in paying homage to one of the the true masters in paperback book cover illustration, Robert A. Maguire.
