Today is the Day!!!

I cannot believe it! It is finally here! Rumors of this show began to trickle out last year and back in mid-October tickets went on sale and I quickly snatched up my weekend pass.

This is a huge, huge deal! Science Fiction and Fantasy illustration, particularly in the realm of book covers, is the kind of art I have the biggest connection to, one that dates back to my earliest recollections of seeing book covers by artists like John Berkey, Frank Frazetta and a host of other amazing artists. This show will feature some of the long-time greats as well as newer faces in the industry. It is going to be amazing, and it is right here in Kansas City. I’m a bit beside myself with glee!

Some of the many I am looking forward to seeing this weekend are:

A Princess of Art

I’m pretty psyched about Edgar Rice Burrough’s Barsoom series right now. As I mentioned in my review of John Carter the movie, I started reading these stories not all that many years ago and they have not been far from my thoughts since cracking open the cover of A Princess of Mars. One of the most prominent reasons for that is the many and varied artists who bring their own unique style to ERB’s characters. As I anxiously anticipate my second theatrical viewing of John Carter (happening tonight), I thought it might be fun to share a little of that art with you.

Artist Robert Abbett created the above image for the 1963 Ballantine version of A Princess of Mars. It is a lovely work and is a cover I have yet to collect. Dejah Thoris is a real beauty in this illustration, calling to my mind a young Elizabeth Taylor.

Come along with me and check out some more artwork. I hope you have fun and share what is one your mind.

Favorite Science Fiction and Fantasy Covers of 2011

(Picture of one of my favorite illustrators, Frank Frazetta. Photo Credit)

For much of my blogging life I have tried to maintain a commitment to not only discuss books but also to showcase artists past and present whose work I admire. While I have gotten away from that to some degree over the years (need to fix that!) one of my annual pleasures is sharing the book cover illustrations that I found most exciting from science fiction and fantasy books published in 2011. This is in no way meant to be an exhaustive list and I understand that we all have different tastes. I am well aware of the fact that I am not a definitive authority on what is “best”, I simply know what I like and venture to explain why I like it. Book covers draw me to books, it is as simple as that. Even when it comes to reading authors whose work I have previously enjoyed, I will go out of my way to find a cover that attracts my eye if more than one cover is available. This is especially true with science fiction classics.

Here then are the book covers that I’ve liked best from what was published in the United States this year. Rather than grouping them in any special order, I chose to display them in order of publication, from the beginning of 2011 through the end. Special thanks go out to Locus Magazine online for their annual posting of the covers and artists of genre-related material, to SF Signal for their Cover Art Smackdowns, and also to Fantasy Book Critic for their monthly spotlight posts, which provided a clear, concise format for me to review this year’s releases.

Michael Whelan’s Works of Wonder

(Cover for The Robots of Dawn by Issac Asimov, 1984)

Michael Whelan’s Works of Wonder ~Michael Whelan

–Copyright 1987
–a Del Rey Book (Ballantine Books)
–106 pages
–8/10

About a week ago Jim Black posted a review of a book entitled Wonderworks featuring the art of Michael Whelan (review here). My blog friend Susan and I commented over there and she let me know that she might have an extra one of those books, which she then offered to me as a gift. It turned out not to be the exact same book, but you will hear no complaints from me. I came home Friday to find this in my mailbox and it was an awesome surprise. Not only is it a very nice quality hardback book of one of my favorite (since childhood) SF/F illustrators, but it contains several of the illustrations which sparked the flame of fandom in the first place.

In addition to fantastic full-page illustrations printed in gorgeous color on high-quality paper, each image has a facing page with text about the image, written by Michael Whelan, and smaller images of sketches, thumbnails and alternate ideas. One of the things I was thrilled to discover is that Michael Whelan is an artist who actually reads the manuscripts (twice, at least) before beginning work on the illustration. And you can tell by some of the comments that he is a fan of the genre.

Before I take you behind the scenes to see a small sampling of the images in this volume, here are a couple of program notes:

1. The picture at the top of this post is the actual cover image for Michael Whelan’s World of Wonder, but the title text is not original. I couldn’t find a quality image of the cover so I just picked a couple of fonts somewhat near the actual book and did what I could for a mock up.

2. Each image is followed by the book title and author that the illustration graces as well as a date. The date is the release date for this version of the book, not necessarily the first publication of the story.

Okay, let’s see some art!

Let ‘er RIP: A Interview with Jennifer Gordon

(Butterfly Girl II)

Our wonderful art hostess for RIP V, Jennifer Gordon, has once again graciously agreed to sit in the interview chair. I have been a fan of Jennifer Gordon’s work for the past few years, and in that time she has also grown into a good friend. I appreciate so much that she allows me to use her always ethereal, sometimes gothic, art to accompany the R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril challenge. If you haven’t had the pleasure of partaking of my previous interviews with Jennifer, here are the links:
