Old Man’s War by John Scalzi

Since Angela recently conceded her struggle to get through The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein I thought I should review a recent science fiction read of mine that I really think she will like. The book, chosen to be one of the Sci Fi Essential volumes, is Old Man’s War by John Scalzi. I remember seeing the book in the store when it was released in trade paperback and absolutely loving the cover art. It is the work of John Harris and is reminiscent of the covers of science fiction books that caught my eye as a young man and first interested me in this genre. I decided to pick it up and read it after this review by Nic on the Eve’s Alexandra site. Her description of the story made me rush right out to get it.

Wednesday Matinee

When I was a kid we would spend summers going to cheap, kids-only matinees at the local cinema. In homage to that here are some more upcoming films that I am looking forward to:

Fence pointed out yesterday that there is a trailer out for Frank Miller’s (Sin City) lastest graphic-novel-turned-film, 300. Enter the website and select media to view the trailer. According to the trailer it is due out in March of next year. Gerard Butler (Phantom of the Opera, Dear Frankie) looks pretty intense. Looks to be a stylish and no doubt violent film. I wouldn’t expect anything less from the mind of Frank Miller.

Tuesday Twaddle

Fables is an amazing comic book series that has been going on for a number of years. The basic premise is that all the fairy tale characters in all the lands of the earth are real. Years ago many of these characters were forced to flee from their lands when a mysterious entity known as “the Adversary” and his goblin horde invaded the homelands of various fables. Those who escaped fled through various magical gateways into our world. They occupy a portion of New York City and, for those non-human fables, a farm in New York. Both are enchanted so that humans don’t recognize them as anything but normal people. They have lived among us for a long time and they are marshalling their forces in hopes of eventually taking back their homelands.

The Prestige

The Prestige

Mindblowing.

Thought provoking.

Fodder for much conversation once the credits roll.

Vintage Christopher Nolan.

See it, Experience it, then see it again. Don’t talk about it, don’t read anything about it, just see it .

“Are you watching closely?”

Friday Favorites: But is it art?

Today’s Friday Favorite seemed fitting for two reasons. First because the above image is very much in line with the season (and reminds me of Death in that cartoon The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy). Second because it has been another weird week and looking at these images late last night made me giggle stupidly.

Let me first state that I do not condone vandalism or graffiti. I have seen too many wonderful old buildings and statues marred by this form of ‘expression’. However, there are times when it can be quite humorous, and once it is up there can you blame me for chuckling? Can you? I will also acknowledge that generally my Friday Favorites are focused on art and I would freely admit that the following images beg the question:
