Friday Favorites: But is it art?

Today’s Friday Favorite seemed fitting for two reasons. First because the above image is very much in line with the season (and reminds me of Death in that cartoon The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy). Second because it has been another weird week and looking at these images late last night made me giggle stupidly.

Let me first state that I do not condone vandalism or graffiti. I have seen too many wonderful old buildings and statues marred by this form of ‘expression’. However, there are times when it can be quite humorous, and once it is up there can you blame me for chuckling? Can you? I will also acknowledge that generally my Friday Favorites are focused on art and I would freely admit that the following images beg the question:

For me the answer is that this is indeed not art. But hopefully the following images will give you a wry smile, a giggle, maybe a guffaw or two, and will assist you in entering the weekend on a good note. At the very least you get a glimpse of what I think is funny when I am very, very tired.

Let’s start out with something for those who are a product of the 80’s, of which I count myself a member (not that these images are for Members Only….sorry, that was a baaad 80’s reference!):

and the one that really had me snickering last night:

Can’t you just hear it in your mind?!?!?

Of course I had to include this one for Suzanne:

and I wanted to include this one simply because I like robots and the ‘head’ reminded me of one:

I have always liked shows like In Living Color because they were equal opportunity offenders. They never let anyone off the hook. Some of these images may be offensive in that manner. And yet they speak volumes about our culture as well. For example:

and

both of which I found really funny and profoundly sad at the same time. And I apologize for the language in the following one. Since it included my own name I thought it was oddly amusing:

And of course one can always find examples of philosophical graffiti:

and

and

and

Would that the above bit of wisdom would make the work day go faster!

I don’t know about you, but I find the following image fraught with temptation (and oddly in line with a couple of Quixotic’s recent posts):

And believe it or not, graffiti can be educational:

I certainly didn’t know that!

Being a dog owner I found this one humorous:

I think I’ve met some of those hounds. And of course there are those that are so obvious when you see them that you realize that grafitti was a forgone conclusion:

There’s no real explanation for this, again I just found it funny:

I have saved my two favorites for last. Let me mention though that these images and many, many more can be found at Pictures of Walls. Not only can you browse the four current albums of similar photos but you can submit your own. Just don’t go around making your own graffiti. I would hate to think that I am a bad influence!

I love this one:

and this one just had me cracking up:

(translation for those not hip-hop inclined: T Bone is the illest)

That’s it. I probably owe everyone an apology now. Go check out the others and have yourself a good laugh, or shake your head and weep for me, whichever is most appropriate.

Have a wonderful Friday everyone!!!

  1. I’m still grinning. some of these are too funny. Promise I won’t indulge my desire to decorate or comment on others property, but will definitely visit the link!

  2. Don’t be ashamed Heather, fart humor is definitely an art form! 😉

  3. oh, hahahahah!!! I love the “loathsome” one, the “miss being a tree” one and the “sarcastic dog” one best!

  4. That was a great post Carl. I don’t know which is my favorite, but the Ice Ice Baby was pretty clever.

    Thanks!

  5. Clever graffiti, how do I love thee… Sometimes I wish I had my own can of spray paint.
Also that I could actually spray-paint, but that’s a whole ‘nother story, innit?! 😉

  6. Oh my gosh!! LOL!!! Seriously! This is not safe for work, unless you want to get caught by your laughing!

You always have the best pics up! I really enjoy coming to your site because I know that I am always going to come across something intriguing and thought-provoking. I call it delicious eye candy. I hope you never stop!

  7. You’re right Suzanne, but they are pretty funny. I’ll check back next Friday.

  8. These are great, BUT . . . “Ice Ice Baby” and “Hammer Time” are NOT 80s references. Neither came along until the early 90s. (I know; I was there. Unfortunately.) Please, don’t insult the 80s!

  9. I have to profess myself quite a lover of humourous graffiti, and those are some of the best I’ve seen. In the town I live in, graffiti is pretty common, as is graffiti art. In fact, I may now post some Bristolian graffiti on my blog, including some of the works of the great Banksy, who sadly left our town a while ago for greener pastures. Thanks for a great idea for a post.

    GG

  10. LOL! I miss being a tree and Ice Ice Baby were my favorites from above. This is sad but your Friday favorites are becoming my Saturday morning favorites. 🙂

  11. Sorry Wayne, but early 1990 albums are still 80’s music despite barely making it into the 90’s (both were in the studio recording said albums in 1989 in order to make their 1990 release dates) and both are definitely products of the 80’s generation. No sense blaming the innocent 90’s for those guys, they just got foisted on unsuspecting 1990! 😉

  12. Wow… the images made me laugh so hard I thought I was going to fall off my chair… thanks!

  13. I want to know where you got the “ice ice baby” and “are you living your dream” graffiti. I found that cool website that had those featured. I had the words “wall”/”writing” in its URL. Please help me find it!

  14. You’re welcome, I was hoping you’d come back to get the link.

  15. These have me in stitches – I’ve seen them before, which website are they from originally?!
