Wednesday Matinee

When I was a kid we would spend summers going to cheap, kids-only matinees at the local cinema. In homage to that here are some more upcoming films that I am looking forward to:

Fence pointed out yesterday that there is a trailer out for Frank Miller’s (Sin City) lastest graphic-novel-turned-film, 300. Enter the website and select media to view the trailer. According to the trailer it is due out in March of next year. Gerard Butler (Phantom of the Opera, Dear Frankie) looks pretty intense. Looks to be a stylish and no doubt violent film. I wouldn’t expect anything less from the mind of Frank Miller.

On a lighter note I am hopefull about Russell Crowe’s latest endeavor, A Good Year. I have to admit to being a big fan of Crowe despite his off screen antics. I haven’t seen all of his movies but I have enjoyed those that I have seen. I am hoping this turns out to be a film like The Lake House or some of the other sentimental films that I mentioned yesterday. This is a date night movie for sure.

Switching to the small screen, the Hellboy animated series is scheduled to debut on the Cartoon Network this Saturday, October 28th at 8:30 CST before its release on DVD. The actors from the film voice their roles in the animated project which I am very pleased with. If you are a fan of Mike Mignola’s work I highly recommend setting your TIVO or VCR or whatever on record and getting this while they are offering it gratis. Thank you Jeff for making me aware of this.

And last but not least for today is this December 8th release, The Good German. Does the poster look familiar? Casablanca anyone? I enjoyed George Clooney’s last black and white film, Good Night, and Good Luck and from a production standpoint this looks equally as eye-catching. I like old black and white films and I also like the intensity in contrasts that can be achieved with modern film making using black and white. Great cast and looks very interesting.

Hopefully dreaming of going to the movies will help humpday go by quickly. Happy Wednesday, everyone!

  1. I hadn’t heard anything about any of these films but the Good German and the Russell Crowe film look like possibilities.

  2. I wasn’t even aware that George was in that. We just don’t talk like we used to, him and me…

  3. I’m sorry Anne, its hard when relationships begin to fade…. 😉

  4. I’ve a feeling that the Russell Crowe one won’t be great. They have two different trailers out over here, one makes it look like a total comedy, the other a more serious life-altering romance. I’d say it somewhere in between, but often mixed marketing means the makes aren’t too sure of what they have.
I’ll probably still go see it though.

And 300 looks fantastic. Anything with Spartans gets my interest 😉

  5. ooo – 300 looks amazing (was gonna say fantastic, but then Fence would think that I was trying ot imitate her and all would be lost 😉 ) – it’s nice to see that they are counter-pointing the current comicbook-to-movie craze with something like this – as a kid i remember a few of the historical comicbooks as soom of the best. the trailer blows my mind. wonderful, but i think i want to read the graphic novel first…

Good night and Good Luck was stellar. Murrow is one of my heros and they did the movie so well. i was thinking of Clooney the other dy and how far he has come from ER…

  6. 300 looks scary, but too violent for me, I think. The Good German sounds interesting!

I posted a nice Halloween story last night that might help your day pass more quickly…along with a nice picture of me at the bottom of the entry 🙂

  7. I have high hopes for A Good Year. This weekend I’m definitely going to see The Prestige. I
think on my blog you asked how M.A was and I failed to respond…I didn’t enjoy it at all, but it might
be right up someone else’s alley…

  8. I read Frank Miller’s 300 series when it first came out. If the movie is as good, it will be a must-see. Be warned, though–Miller pulls no punches. And ancient warfare ain’t pretty.

  9. All those movies look great. I hadn’t heard of The Good German but I love that poster. I also have read 300 and enjoyed it thoroughly. Very bloody comic though so I imagine the movie will be too. I love historical movies though. I also have high hopes for A Good Year. I’m also a Russell Crowe fan.

  10. I’ll have to check out 300 when it comes out and I am so there for The Good German. I hadn’t even heard of it.

  11. I’m a Russell Crowe fan, and have seen practically everything he’s ever done. I skipped one of his early Australian movies as being way too violent. I read The Good German when it came out a few years ago. It was a very good noir book, so I’m glad to hear that George Clooney made it into a movie. He’s come a long way since ER. Syriana was one of the best movies I ‘ve seen this year…and the most disturbing.
