Sunshine

“Sunshine? What the heck is that?”

If these are your thoughts as you view the above movie poster, you wouldn’t be alone. For some inexplicable reason, this glorious science fiction thriller, from director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Millions) has, despite its title, been almost completely kept in the dark…at least here in the United States. I recall seeing a trailer once many, many months ago and was thus suprised to see it suddenly released this past weekend with no fanfare. This type of studio behavior generally signals that a load of trash is about to be released on an unsuspecting audience. With Sunshine, however, nothing could be further from the truth.

Recalled to Life

(image from former Friday Favorite, Simon Marsden)

Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated, and yet it feels like I am being resurrected rather than just returning. A four day vacation followed by essentially working two jobs all week (three if you count the fact that my assistant director is on vacation) has left me tired and uninspired. But I miss you all greatly and so I am back.

In leiu of a Friday Favorite this week I just wanted to drop by and say “hello” and to assure you that this weekend will find me catching up on all the wonderful blog posts I missed over the past week. I also wanted to let you know that the Tiny Stories results are in from our judges, so next week all of you will have the privilege that myself and my wife, and Scott and Colleen, have already had, and that is to read all the great entries into this contest. Of course I will also announce a winner!

Next week will also see my entry or two in a wonderful contest that Deslily is hosting…more about this next week…as well as a plethora of reviews, some freebies that you simply must sign up for, and a return to Friday Favorites.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! And give yourself a pat on the back if you know what amazing classic of English Literature the title of this post hails from.

Robots and Rockets and Rats, Oh My!!!

“It is never too late to have a happy childhood”
~Tom Robbins

Truth be told, I would have to amend the above quote and add the word ‘second’ between ‘happy’ and ‘childhood’, as I really enjoyed my first one. Actually I am still enjoying my first one! 😉

I like toys, and as I’ve matured into adulthood one of the more entertaining realizations that I have come to is that I can continue to like toys…and the toys I can afford now are much cooler.

I am not talking about the typical ‘guy’ toys, like cars and powertools, and trophy wives (although those are cool too!). No, I am talking about geek toys…robots and rayguns, replica Lord of the Rings swords and shapely Princess Leia statues.

Today I bring you some of the images of what was to be last Friday’s Friday Favorites post, all about one of my favorite things: toys!

A Prodigal Returns

“For whatsoever from one place doth fall,
Is with the tide unto an other brought:
For there is nothing lost, that may be found, if sought.”

~Edmund Spenser, The Faerie Queene (Canto II.)

Some memories run deep. Do you have those? Memories that have an almost indescribable substance to them? Memories that exist not only in your head, but that you feel in your gut? I have some memories that manifest in a palpable ache for a time in the past. Memories do run deep. Regrets do as well.

Paris, Je T’aime

Love is a many splendored thing…as is this delightful film about love, and the city of love.

Paris Je T’aime (Paris, I love you) is a grand concept. Take 20 directors and give them each five minutes worth of film time to direct a postcard of love to Paris. To further establish that this is indeed a love story to the city, each segment would be set in one of the twenty arrondissement municipals (municipal boroughs) into which the city is divided. Arrange these together with an overall framing sequence and voila!, romance is born.

It sounds deceptively simple, does it not? I would guess that it was anything but. One indication of that fact would be that two of the filmed sequences had to be left out of the final film as writer/director Emmanuel Benbihy and director Frédéric Auburtin could not integrate them into the final product to their satisfaction.

Thus, what one ends up with is 18 stories directed by 18 separate directors, including a cast that is fascinatingly diverse, that demonstrate the ecstasy and the agony of love while giving an honest look at the city which is the very personification of romance. And what a remarkable result!
