Friday Favorite Re-do: Charles Vess

(Cover image for the new Stardust hardcover)

Well, today is the day. Well, for me it is actually tomorrow, but for many of you today marks the day we have all been anticipating and–if you are like me–also dreading: The opening of the theatrical version of Stardust.

More than any other film I have looked forward to this year, I want this one to satisfy both my film-loving self and my dedication to the source material. It is a tall order and may be completely unfair of me to feel that way. I guess I’ll know (and you will too as I’ll have to share) tomorrow.

The one person who I suspect will get less credit than the others for Stardust is Charles Vess. Hopefully I’ll be proven wrong and the movie will bring him the acclaim he deserves. Despite the fact that I have already ran this Friday Favorite during the Once Upon a Time Challenge, it only seemed fitting to rerun it in honor of a man whose art channels the spirits of greats like Arthur Rackham and is truly all that is right about fairy tale art.

So once again I bring you, Charles Vess.

Rules of Acquisition

Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #45: Expand or die.

Forgive the Star Trek reference, much of the weekend was spent in (almost) completing Season Two of Deep Space Nine. I love how, even that far back, they were dropping hints about the Dominion. I can’t wait to see what Season Three has in store.

For the most part, those of us who are bibliophiles buy books…lots of books…certainly more than we can or will get read until the next time we find ourselves in a bookstore buying more books. Chris talked about it this week. Dark Opheus did, as well. Why do we do it? We live by Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #97: Enough…is never enough.

The Bourne Ultimatum

A Non-Spoiler Review

Through two previous installments, screenwriter Tony Gilroy and actor Matt Damon have brought to life Robert Ludlum’s singular creation: Jason Bourne. And through the previous two films they have proved that covert and clandestine spy thrillers can be gritty and tough and damn entertaining.

With The Bourne Ultimatum, director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy) returns along with Gilroy and Damon to unleash the denouement on what has to be one of the very best movie trilogies ever made.

Tiny Stories Unveiled

We’re all made of stories. When they finally put us underground, the stories are what will go on. Not forever, perhaps, but for a time. It’s a kind of immortality, I suppose, bounded by limits, it’s true, but then so’s everything.”

~ Charles de Lint

Our illustrious judges, Colleen Gleason and Scott Embler, have notified me of the results of the Tiny Stories Contest, and thus it is my great pleasure to share all of the wonderful entries with you. Afterwards I will announce the winner. But first:

If you submitted a story and do not see it here, I apologize. I combed through all my email multiple times to find stories and hope to have gotten them all. One of the things that occurred to me during the process is that for the next writing competition I will send a reply as soon as I receive entries, thus giving you, the submitee, a way to determine whether or not your email has gone through.

Second, I have placed names next to each story, but there are a few of you whose websites I cannot determine. If you don’t see a link to your site please leave it in the comments and I will update the post.

I was so pleased with the participation and the quality of stories produced. Well done all! There is a great deal of creativity out there and I am excited to have experienced the output of your creativity.

So what are the rest of you waiting for? On with the tales…

Deadly Avocados and Free Stuff

We all love free stuff, right? And avocados, we love them too, don’t we? Okay, well maybe only some of us love avocados, but I would venture to assume that there isn’t a one of us who doesn’t like free stuff, especially if the free stuff involves books!

Deslily is hosting fun giveaway that involves nothing more than you posting about a character from a book. Here, I’ll let her tell it:

“I want the post to be about a character in a book that you really like. One that for whatever reason, you can’t seem to forget. Or one that you related to. Or one that made you laugh. Just make it about a character you can’t seem to forget. Tell about how you found this character, and most of all… why you like him/ her/ it… post it before August 3rd and leave a link so that others can read your post.”

What a great idea! Now, to choose which character…
