It gives me great pleasure to announce a new weekly feature over at SF Signal: Short Fiction Friday, hosted by me. I entered the year determined to keep current with the short fiction posted in the magazines I subscribe to: Lightspeed, Clarkesworld and Asimov’s. When the offer came to join the SF Signal team I decided that hosting a weekly feature reviewing these magazines as well as other SFF short stories would be a perfect marriage.
Today is the inaugural post and features my review of the latest issue of Clarkesworld magazine. This was especially exciting for me as it is my first ever Clarkesworld read. The magazine features both fiction and nonfiction related to SFF and every work reviewed in this magazine is available for free online. I hope you will take a moment to check out the non-spoiler review. If you find anything of interest then you can follow the link and experience it for yourself.
From this issue I especially recommend Erzebet Yellowboy’s story “Gravity” which called to mind the film Sunshine and Daniel Abraham’s nonfiction essay “Another Word: Reading and Writing and Moral Judgment”.
The review is up now, so please click here to enjoy the review. As always, thank you for your support.
I’ll definitely pop over and check this out. Thanks Carl.
Is that cover a bit creepy looking or what! I do like it though.

Thanks Lynn, I appreciate you going over there and leaving your comments.
The cover is very creepy. Thankfully it has nothing to do with any of the stories. Not sure I would want to read that story, may have nightmares for days.
Why did you select these three magazines?
Erzbet is interesting, she does these hand-made one-of-a-kind publications of the speculative fiction that she finds and enjoys.
I started picking Asimov’s up sporadically several years back when a cover image would catch my eye or a short story author I liked would be featured. I’ve come to find it an outstanding magazine. Even when the occasional issue comes in where all the stories feel ‘meh’ I am entertained by the columns and reviews.
I wanted to start reading Lightspeed because it has generated some nice praise and I’ve been a fan of editor John Joseph Adams since he began at Night Shade Books.
I picked up a subscription to Clarkesworld when some other blogger was encouraging people to do so because of the heart surgery Neil Clarke was having. I had heard good buzz from stories being on awards lists and thought it was a win-win situation to be able to support him and get a chance to dive into this magazine too.
I’d like to read some of the others out there too but frankly I’d get nothing else read if all I read were short story genre mags.
These three seem to be very solid picks.
Congratulations on your new column, Carl! Heading over to take a look. π
Thank you Peter, hope you’ll check out some of the stories. Up this Friday: Lightspeed #33. It is a good one!
