This Book Can’t Be Filmed!!! Oh but why?

aother2

I recently came across an article that io9 posted late last year entitled “10 Science Fiction Novels That Will Definitely Never Be Movies”. One of the novels cited was the Hugo and Nebula award-winning novel, Among Others, by Jo Walton. Charlie Jane Anders wrote:

“But it’s almost impossible to imagine Among Others working as a movie, for the exact reasons that it works so well as a book – the blend of memoir, beguilingly strange fantasy and book criticism depends on Walton’s voice, and there’s almost no way to pull out the bones of the story without including all of the musings on classic 1970s novels and storytelling, and the responsible use of magical powers.”

In the comments Jo Walton chimes in:

“Among Others will never be a movie because I keep saying no whenever I get nibbles of interest from Hollywood — because I agree with you.”

If you have read Among Others you no doubt agree.

I do too.

Except for the fact that I believe something special could be done in regards to adapting this novel cinematically. By “Hollywood”?…well, no. But by one or more very special film makers?

I would like to see them try.

My 2012 In Review

As December rolls around every year the annual Best Of lists start cropping up all over the internet, and I for one love them. Inevitably they mean adding books and movies and television shows and video games and music to my ever-growing list of entertainment of which I would like to partake, but that is a hazard I am willing to fully embrace as I wade into these posts, be they from professional outlets, from authors, or from passionate bloggers like yourself.

I get giddy every time I see one of these lists crop up via email or other blog links.

I generally wait until I see the year’s dying embers before posting my list because experience has shown that I end up reading something late in the year that will make it on to my list. This year was no exception. In fact my favorite book of the year was read a scant few weeks ago.

This promises to be a lengthy post, per usual, so I apologize in advance. At the end of the post is a Mr. Linky for you to post links to your various Year End posts and I do so hope you’ll provide links so that we can all blog hop and see what stories grabbed hold of you this year and wouldn’t let go, regardless of what format those stories were in. Please share your opinions, not just about my choices, in the comments as well.

Something Wicked(ly fun) This Way Came

Santa was extra-good to me during the Christmas season of 2008. I was sent a very special gift. I was one of a handful of people who were specially chosen to receive a handmade gift by Laika to celebrate the completion of and impending release of the stop-motion animated adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s charmingly disturbed young adult novel, Coraline. It probably goes without saying that I was beside myself with glee and while the gift itself was very special it became even more so upon seeing the film. I am a HUGE fan of stop-motion animation, an appreciation and passion that was born of the Rankin/Bass Christmas specials that I looked forward to each and every year on broadcast television. That love was renewed with the release of Tim Burton’s A Nightmare Before Christmas and in the years since a number of really amazing stop-motions creations have found their way to the big screen and to smaller screens throughout the world.

Well, the insanely creative team at Laika has done it again, this time with the movie ParaNorman. A few months back I received an email asking if I would mind forwarding my mailing address because they would like to send me a special gift. Would I? I couldn’t respond fast enough. Time went buy and I mostly forgot that something was coming my way, though occasionally I would remember and those feelings of nervous anticipation and excitement would arise. And a few weeks ago I walked into my house after work to see the package, pictured above, awaiting me on the living room floor…

Geek Status Reaffirmed

It all starts a week from tonight! I cannot wait. For the rest of the Tuesday nights in June I will be in nerd heaven…nerdvana?

The Extended Editions on the BIG SCREEN. I am particularly excited about:

“The events will begin with a new and personal introduction for each film from The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson captured from the set of his current film, and The Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit“

These are going to be some late nights! Perhaps I can salvage some of my sleep time if I wear my Aragorn Underoos and Hobbit-feet slippers to the theater?

The Best: 2010 in Review

(Image found here)

“For those of us who take pleasure in the art of reading, a new year opens up endless possibilities. Where will our reading journeys take us? I, for one, positively quiver with excitement thinking about it. As I start a new year, I have all sorts of ideas and plans about what I am going to try to read, which new authors I may finally sample, which books I have planned to read year after year that I might just get to this year. I make all manner of secret reading promises to myself, some that I keep, others that get usurped by wild whims and literary desires. In the end it is just one more reason that reading is one of the best things about being alive.”

The new year began with those words…then I blinked, and 2010 was over. Well, in many ways it certainly feels like that, in other ways it was a long year. Economic woes, employment challenges, health issues and an uncertain political climate, among other things, either touched us directly in our personal lives or indirectly in the lives of family and friends. In the midst of both chaos and contentment I took comfort and pleasure in the written word.

And with that thought in mind I will join the others who like to look back on a literary year with my 2010 Year In Review.
