Zoe’s Tale ~John Scalzi

Zoe’s Tale ~John Scalzi

–published 2008
–336 pages, Tor Books
–4.5/5 stars

As I embark upon reviewing this, the latest novel in John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War series, I must admit that I am feeling somewhat guilty. Over the course of the past two years John Scalzi has occupied a slot as one of my all-time favorite authors. I have devoured his books only to find myself with two conflicting emotions: satisfaction and the desire for more. So how is it that I am just now reviewing a book that came out in August of this year? I bought the book the minute it hit bookstore shelves! In fact it came out early and I was so excited that I brought it straight home and immediately started reading it. After all, it was the latest Scalzi! So what happened? Well, me–that is what happened. I was not in the mood for science fiction at the time, particularly as I was gearing up for hosting the R.I.P. III Challenge and was in a particularly gothic mood. I have never been secretive about the fact that I am a reader tossed to and fro by his reading whims and Zoe’s Tale was just not right for me at the time. Sure, I had enjoyed the first 90 to 100 pages that I read, but not the way that I wanted to. I wasn’t finding myself lost in John Scalzi’s universe the way I had been with the other three novels of this series. And so I did the unthinkable, I laid aside a favorite author with the sincere hope that it was just my timing that was off and that when I came back to Zoe and her perspective on the events covered in The Last Colony I would be able to give this author the reverence due his position in my ‘favorites’ hierarchy.

What follows will hopefully serve as an apology to Mr. John Scalzi and to all of you who would never dare to treat a cherished author the way that I have treated mine.

Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse ~ed. John Joseph Adams

Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse ~edited by John Joseph Adams

–published 2008
–327 pages, Night Shade Books
–4.5/5 stars

As 2008 began I found myself not only craving science fiction but craving it in the short story format. I have always been a fan of the short story but a review of my reading lists for the past couple of years finds short stories sorely underrepresented. My determination to remedy that had me on the lookout for new collections and the fabulous Daniel Kvasznicza cover image on Wastelands was quick to catch my eye. I enjoy post-apocalyptic stories but did not recall reading many in the short story format and that intrigued me as well.

Editor John Joseph Adams’ collection of 22 stories, representing a wide-variety of post-apocalyptic scenarios from some of the field’s most prolific authors, is a must-have volume for fans of the this subgenre of science fiction. What makes Wastelands great, however, is that it contains the type and caliber of stories that should appeal to those who are simply fans of the format and are unsure of their feelings about post-apocalyptic literature.

Although I gave the anthology itself a rating based on the 5 star system I adopted this year with my reviews, I am going to give each individual story a grade as I feel that it gives me a slightly wider range within which to rate my impressions. And now, on to the stories:

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep ~Philip K. Dick

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep ~Philip K. Dick

–published 1968
–244 pages, Del Rey Books
–Nebula Award Nominee
–3.75/5 stars

Forget all you know or think you know about the story that inspired Ridley Scott’s 1982 science fiction classic, Bladerunner. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep–one of the greatest book titles ever in my opinion–is as different from its celluloid offspring as night is from day. Well, perhaps not that different but the comparison comes close.

Halting State ~Charles Stross

Halting State ~Charles Stross
–published 2007
–351 pages, Ace Books
–4.5/5 stars

A post cyberpunk, near-future caper. A spy-vs-spy story of greed, fraud and deception set in and among the world of MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games). A police procedural techno-thriller with undercurrents of espionage and a healthy dose of so-near-you-can-almost-taste-it technology. A tale filled with hi-tech big-brother-is-watching-you gadgetry and gaming in-jokes with a dash of geek-on-geek romance thrown in for good measure.

These run on sentence, sound bite descriptions of Hugo and Locus award-winning author Charles Stross’ novel Halting State barely scratch the surface of the genres and sub-genres of storytelling that Stross successively incorporates into this arresting (pardon the pun) tale. Halting State is a novel whose technical achievement and craft is no doubt more readily apparent to those with a heady knowledge of computer science and online gaming and yet the novel maintains a sense of accessibility for the newbie throughout because of the backbone that this structure is built on: a good old fashioned heist story.

–250 pages, Shasta Publishers
–Winner of first ever Hugo award, 1953
–4.5/5 stars

In the endless universe there is nothing new, nothing different. What may appear exceptional to the minute mind of man may be inevitable to the infinite Eye of God. This strange second in a life, that unusual event, those remarkable coincidences of environment, opportunity, and encounter… all may be reproduced over and over on the planet of a sun whose galaxy revolves once in two hundred million years and has revolved nine times already.

There are and have been worlds and cultures without end, each nursing the proud illusion that it is unique in space and time. There have been men without number suffering from the same megalomania; men who imagined themselves unique, irreplaceable, irreproducible. There will be more… more plus infinity. This is the story of such a time and such a man… The Demolished Man.
