February 2015 Cover Story

kmemimage

It is the February 2015 edition of Cover Story, the monthly post where I feature a handful of cover images from books and other story formats that will be coming out this month.

I feature the images because I am a fan of SF/F/H genre illustration, believe the artists and designers who create these covers should be lauded for their work, and want to promote the publishers who commissioned the illustrations and the authors whose works they adorn.

I am not an art critic, nor an artist, and my descriptions of why I am attracted to these covers will quickly reveal my nonprofessional, fan status. Nonetheless I do judge books by their covers, at least initially, and am curious about what does, and does not, catch the eye of other book lovers and Fantastic art fans.

This month is a short list, but one that has the potential of damaging my wallet all the same (In fact, it already has!).

I highly encourage you to follow the artist links to check out more creations by each featured artist/designer. Be an encourager, and when you can be, a patron of the incredibly talented women and men who create this work.

(The opening image is the work of artist Cynthia Sheppard. This work and all featured artwork is the property of the artist/designer and the publisher.)

RYO_TheDefinitive1950sReadingChallenge

January saw the end of two of my favorite events of the year, The 2015 Sci Fi Experience hosted here at Stainless Steel Droppings and Vintage Sci Fi Month hosted by Andrea at the Little Red Reviewer. I will wrap those up after the break.

As these two science fiction related reading events come to a close, another one has begun.

The Definitive 1950’s SF Reading Challenge
, hosted on the World’s Without End website as part of their Roll Your Own Challenge project, is a challenge based on the work of one of my online friends, James Wallace Harris.

Using a database that collates rankings from a wide variety of online sources, Harris has created definitive lists of books for several different decades. This challenge utilizes his rankings for the decade of the 1950’s.

The challenge is to read a book from each of the ten years, beginning with 1950, in chronological order, chosen from the books in Harris’ database. Though you do not have to predetermine the books you will read, I had a fun time creating my tentative list. The books, in order of publication (and hence reading order), are:

My Favorites of 2014: A MASSIVE issue of Cover Story

aciljust
(Ancillary Justice X 3, painting by John Harris for Orbit Books)

I have been writing about my personal favorite science fiction and fantasy covers on an annual basis for many years now, and in 2014 expanded the art coverage with a monthly Cover Story post, showcasing work being released in that month. In looking back over 2014 there is a massive amount of eye-catching, wallet lightening cover art commissioned for works that came out from January through December. I could have posted many more images, but one must stop somewhere, right?

All works of art featured here are the property of the artists and the publishers who commissioned them and are featured with the sole intention of shining a spotlight on creators of Fantastic Art and on those publishers, large or small, who are doing their part to keep the tradition of illustrated/designed cover art on science fiction, fantasy and horror publications. As I peruse the genre shelves of my local bookstore I see too many photo stock covers. Some of them are quite creative and garner my interest. But I am old school in that I want to see the work of painters, sketchers, designers (traditional and digital) on genre covers.

I don’t claim to be an art critic, I just know what I like, and want to share these with you in hopes of introducing you to artists, authors, and publishers of whom you may not have been aware.

Title, publisher, artist, author information for each featured image is followed by the cover image and some text, in brief, related to the illustration. I usually say more about these images in the monthly Cover Story posts, but I have been merciful to you here.

For those images that accompany Tor.com short stories, you can click on the story title to be taken directly to the story online. Magazines featured will take you directly to that online issue with a simple click on the title.

Thank you to all the Art/Creative Directors who commissioned these works, to the artists for creating them, and to the publishing houses that continue to get great work like this on their publications. I salute you, keep fighting the good fight.

2015 New Releases in Science Fiction and Fantasy

I had the privilege of participating in the Mind Meld feature on SF Signal, which asked the question “What 2015 Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror books are you looking forward to reading?”

Topping off my list is the upcoming art collection edited by Cathy Fenner. Women of Wonder: Celebrating Women Creators of Fantastic Art is slated to debut at Spectrum Fantastic Art Live 4, May 22-24th, here in Kansas City, MO. It will be available to all through online and brick and mortar book outlets.

Of the volume Cathy Fenner writes:

“Women of Wonder is a book that shines the spotlight on women creators of fantastic art. Though the illustration and gallery markets have traditionally been seen as a largely male profession, women have always been active participants, from Kewpie creator Rose O’Neill in the early 1900s to 1950s Disney film designer Mary Blair to Spectrum Grand Masters Diane Dillon and Kinuko Y. Craft. Increasingly women are making their marks in the world of contemporary fantastic art and inspiring new generations of illustrators, designers, sculptors, and painters. I was inspired to put together this collection after watching the expanding numbers of women artists featured in Spectrum; a book seemed like a happy way to acknowledge that growth. However, Women of Wonder isn’t some sort of political polemic but is simply a colorful celebration of the imagination and of exemplary creators who just happen to be women.”

Allow me to humbly assert that my list for Mind Meld, limited to five books maximum, is an exciting one. Please follow this link to Mind Meld to see the books that I, and a number of other authors and bloggers, anticipate for 2015. Let us know over there (and here too) which books you are looking forward to in 2015. As commenters, you are not limited to just 5 selections!

Before you leave, however…

Favorite Reads of 2014

“I never feel lonely if I’ve got a book – they’re like old friends. Even if you’re not reading them over and over again, you know they are there. And they’re part of your history. They sort of tell a story about your journey through life.”

~Emilia Fox

Mid-January will mark a decade of blogging here at Stainless Steel Droppings. I have blogged about many different things here, but one consistent subject is reading, and one of the things I enjoy most about being a blogger is this time of year. The end of one year and the beginning of another brings about conversations of favorite reading, viewing and listening experiences of the year.

While the reading output of 2014 is likely the lowest I have had since I started blogging, the decisions I made about what to read resulted in many new friends, friends that will one day become some of those old friends that Emilia Fox (one of my favorite audio book narrators) references above.

The image I chose for the header accurately reflects the way I feel about a good book…like I am crawling inside it to get swept up in the story.

These are the various stories I read in 2014 that made the biggest impression.
