Friday Favorites: Les Edwards

(Cygnus. All images copyright Les Edwards)

As threatened yesterday, I have brought back the Friday Favorites. For the uninitiated, this category features sites from my Favorites file, mostly art, that I want to share with you. This month’s selections will primarily be science fiction artists whose paintings have either graced science fiction covers for years or are in their own unique way reminiscent of those great artists. Les Edwards (also known as Edward Miller) is one such artist.

The above painting, Cygnus, is one of my absolute favorite pieces of science fiction art. The hazy blue tone and the depth it creates gives one the sense that there is an enormity to this place that is only hinted at in the painting. I sit and stare and wonder who the person walking on the bridge is. For a long time I mistakingly thought that he was walking towards the ship when in fact he is walking away. Is he the pilot? A passenger? A mechanic? His presence gives the piece a feeling of melancholy that I find endearing.

Friday Favorites: Kathie Olivas

(The Abduction)

Tis the Friday before Halloween (or it was when I started this but work interrupted and thus you’re getting it a week late) and so today’s Friday Favorite had to be in some way slightly disturbing. Friday Favorites: But is it art?

Today’s Friday Favorite seemed fitting for two reasons. Second because it has been another weird week and looking at these images late last night made me giggle stupidly.

Let me first state that I do not condone vandalism or graffiti. I have seen too many wonderful old buildings and statues marred by this form of ‘expression’. However, there are times when it can be quite humorous, and once it is up there can you blame me for chuckling? Can you? I will also acknowledge that generally my Friday Favorites are focused on art and I would freely admit that the following images beg the question:

Friday Favorites: The Art of Scott Radke

(All images copyright Scott Radke)

During the month of October my Friday Favorites may tend towards the macabre, the bizarre, the eerie. The creations of Scott Radke evoke those adjectives and more. I was going to post about his work last October and did not get around to it so I would be remiss to let another October pass without sharing his work with you.

Friday Favorites: The Whipples

Today brings more artwork from the 75th Annual Plaza Art Fair. A favorite of Mary and I each year are the 3 booths featuring the creativity of the Whipple family. John and Lynn are husband and wife and, I have to be honest, I’m not sure where Marty Whipple fits into the family tree. All three artists are take unique approaches to work found objects into art.
