Tis that time of year again, International Talk Like a Pirate Day!
Thanks to Captain Jack Sparrow it is unlikely that ye need schooling in the language of our ship going ancestors. In case this be false, however, I recommend a brief tutorial that can be found here. If you are a member of my generation this film will no doubt look familiar as it hearkens back to those elementary school lessons. Quite fun.
For those of you of a literary mind let me recommend Gideon Defoe’s excellent pirate tomes:

The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists: A Novel and The Pirates! In an Adventure with Ahab: A Novel are both available here in the U.S. and I personally can vouch for their sea worthiness. Farcical and Monty Pythonesque, these quick reads are just the thing to satisfy one’s pirate urges.
If you live in the UK, or want to order from the Amazon UK site, these treasures are also available:

The Pirates! In An Adventure with Whaling and The Pirates! In an Adventure with Communists.
For those looking to fill their eyes with pirate images, I recommend a film that was in turn recommended to me by The Fish:

The Crimson Pirate is a rollicking, tongue-in-cheek pirate adventure starring Burt Lancaster, Nick Cravat, and Eva Bartok and a young Christopher Lee. This is a good one to Netflix. This one is good clean fun.
Enjoy this International holiday me mateys! Should be reason enough for a day off from swabbing the poop deck. If you do have to go forth and pillage today, make sure that you greet your co-workers, especially your superiors, with a fair number of ‘scurvy dogs’ and ‘hearty, buxom wenches’. Their appreciation will be swift and heart felt.
I believe it’s Pirate Day at the local Ren Fest as well. Should be loads of fun!
That’s timely!
Yarr, I did mean to post on this very topic, but some black-hearted squid made me forget all about it 🙂
I was listening to the radio driving my son to school and they were talking about this. We wondered whether his teachers would brighten up everyone’s day by talking like pirates, but sadly it didn’t happen. For us Brits the pirate accent is too close to yokel farmhands for absolute comfort…
ahoy matey!
me thinks it’s time to watch Cutthroat Island again..
Cutthroat Island is definitely one that I need to watch again. I’m going to go right now and add it to my Netflix list.
aarrrrr! carl v. be one of the fiercest pirates to have sailed the blogsea! thar be a right fun movie o’knee slappin hilarity and a good lesson to all ye landlubbers!! yar! the fish be celebratin today, as best as we can and if you canna get the tutorial above to work for ye, as i can’t, sail on over to the fish for some holiday fun!
Man, where were you this morning when I could have made a whole day out of annoying everyone with this news?
Sorry Jay, posted at 7:23 a.m. That’s about as early as it gets! 😉
I have looked at those Defoe books at the library, but couldn’t decide whether to give them a try or not! No doubt next time I go they won’t be there! Someone else recommended The Crimson Pirate to me, too. I will have to put it in my Netflix queue! I’m afraid there was no pirate talk at work today–I guess I should have to give the place a little levity! 🙂
If you like silliness then the Pirates! books are for you. They are a good book to check out from the library though because they are a quick read and eventhough they are great looking books they are very pricey.
“Pirates in Adventure with Communists” is just too tempting!!! Must check it out 🙂
The first Gideon Defoe was so much fun I’m surprised I haven’t read more of them. I’ll be visiting my library site in a few.
arrrrrrr, bilge sucking rats at me work prevented me from commentin’ yesterday, they need to walk the plank, matey!
