Artful Distractions

Browncoats rejoice, Firefly goodness continues in the form of a fan focused documentary entitled Done the Impossible, the story of the rise and fall and rebirth of the cult TV show ‘Firefly’, as told from the perspective of the fans who helped save it. In an unprecented move they have released the main feature of this for free download in hopes that fans will then buy the DVD for the additional extras included on the DVD version. All proceeds of the DVD purchase go to Whedon’s favorite charity Equality Now. James has graciously loaded this video on to the server as a Quicktime video which can be downloaded here. It will open in a separate window and take awhile to download so please be patient.

Turning Pages

Saturday was shopping day for the boys…used bookstore shopping, that is. Met up with Jeff and Cameron early in the a.m. to hit a variety of new and used bookstores. Jeff and I have done this before and once again it was a very enjoyable day. Started out with breakfast at 9 a.m. and ended with supper at 7:30 p.m. Interestingly enough I cannot remember the last time I had 3 straight meals in one day at restaurants. My body is still complaining! 😉 For all those hours of shopping I did very well:

I picked up a used copy of a Toff book that I haven’t read (big spender, it cost me a whole dollar!). I used a Border’s coupon to pick up a nice new copy of a book that I have wanted to read for a long time, House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. It is an odd book that has very mixed reviews but is one that I am interested in attempting. And since we are all comic geeks we ended up at a comic shop where I picked up the first issues of a relatively new comic called Supermarket.

The aging of my sweet baboo!

(Yes, I know this is last year’s picture!)

How do people make it through life without a sister?
~Sara Corpening

Happy Birthday, Abby! You are a sweet and wonderful sister and friend who I cannot imagine not having in such a prominent place in my life. I have enjoyed watching you grow up from the little stinker (‘crabby Abby’) that you were to the woman you’ve become (she wasn’t really that crabby but it was fun to call her that). I am so glad that you live close by and can be a part of my everyday life. Hope you have a wonderful birthday and I look forward to Friday night! 🙂

A sister is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost.
~Marion C. Garretty

As a birthday gift the heavens have opened and given Abby…and thankfully the rest of us…a reprieve from the 100+ temps of the past week. It is cloudy, rainy, and the high today is only supposed to get to 87 degrees.

As a pre-gift to you (and everyone else) I want to point you to a very cute webcomic that is just starting out: The Upside Down Me. Before you dive in to start reading make sure that it is set to ‘page 1’. Thus far there are only four pages of what looks to be an interesting tale of a little brother and sister and and upside down version of the brother. The richness of the colors in the comic are wonderful and I especially like the panel in page 3 where the sister is standing on the stool by the sink.

It is updated every Thursday and Sunday so you can follow along. Check it out!

Happy Birthday little sis, I love you very much!

August Beginnings and Uber Days

August began like any other weekday: Get up, mess around on the computer a bit (Silmarillion post), shower, dress, go to work. The fact that the gods had something else in mind was readily apparent when, barely out of the driveway, I came to the realization that I had a flat tire. Nonplussed, I pulled back into the driveway to change it (“4 minutes…time me!”). It was as I went to grab my spare from under the truck that I had one of those flashbacks that one gets sometimes in which I saw myself many months ago hauling donated furniture all over creation for work. At that time I removed my spare tire, which had been sitting in the bed of my truck, and left it at the group home which was our base of operations for the day. The manager there had been worried about the tire laying out so she stuck it in the back of the van, thus ensuring that it would remain ‘out of sight, out of mind’ once the day was over.
