I have recently completed my first review assignment for a relatively new website, The Portal. I read and reviewed the most recent issue of Apex Magazine, edited by award-winning author Catherynne M. Valente. I would love it if you had the time to pop over there to read my review and leave a comment there too, if the mood strikes.

Thank you in advance. 🙂

I did it, though the item reviewed was too dark for my taste. Well written, as usual, Carl.
RkR: Thanks for doing that. I responded to you over there too. It is kind of a dark collection. Not enormously so, but definitely on the dark side, except for the Cooney story which was just very good and had some really interesting humor. I’ll be reviewing issue 20 as well, so that should be entertaining.
Very nice review! I’m seriously tempted, but, one of my sorta New Year’s Resolutions for 2011 is to try to curb my inability to resist temptation to spend money on ephemeral things…sigh…figure that resolutions gonna die a quick and painless death real soon.
sgist: I know the feeling! 🙂
I wonder what the definition of “ephemeral things” is?
I imagine it could cover all kinds of sins, Richard. 🙂
with me, it’s digital books! ^_^
…and food that ends up getting fed to the cats instead of being eaten by a human (me), stuff that i’m just throwing my money away on that I never use….
you’re right, it covers a LOT of sins. heheheh
On of the other parents on my daughter’s soccer team brought her new ” Nook ” to practice and I got to check it some. I have to admit it looked pretty cool. My resistance against e-readers seems to be erroding. I imagine I will get one in time. Just not yet… I still want the price to come down more.
Jeff: Yes, I was reading all about the Nook color a couple of days ago. Mighty tempting!
sgist: Sounds like its good to be a cat in your home! 🙂
oh yes, it’s well known that the cats eat better than I do!
I have one that’s supposed to be on special food from the vet…when it hit $47.50 per 10 lbs.
I switched her to a mixture of dry specialty foods from Purina and she seems to be doing okay.
I live on bologna and cereal…
sgist: Yikes! As a pet owner/lover I understand though. They can be expensive little mongrels.
FYI: the next issue of Apex is out now, which means the stories in issue 19, the one I reviewed, are now all available for free online here:
