(Resist the Empire, image by Dane Ault)
Please forgive this return to Science Fiction in the middle of the Once Upon a Time IV Challenge, but when SGist posted this link in the Melodious Monday post I could not help but be inspired to post a sci fi Friday Favorites post.
And, since we are rapidly approaching the 30 year anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back (May 21st), this is sort of a precursor to the celebration.
You might remember my recent posting of the poster I picked up at Planet Comicon to eventually decorate my new office (pictured above).
Well, here are some other great Star Wars inspired designs that I am certainly tempted to add to my decor:

This is the companion piece to the Resist the Empire poster by Dane Ault. Added to my list of temptations are these by Justin Van Genderen that SGist pointed out today:

Aren’t they all wonderful? And they can be had for a great price too. See these, and a few others that I didn’t post, by clicking here: Imagekind. I love the simple, clean design. I’m torn as to which is my favorite, but right now it is a tie between the one for Alderaan and the one for Hoth.
and of course, this led to other web searches and I came across the Star Wars Masters, reworkings of paintings by the masters, done Star Wars style. Here are a few of my favorites:

More examples can be found by clicking here: Trendland.
Just a little science fiction fun to start your weekend! Now, back to your fantasy reading, or whatever else you are currently reading.
Speaking of which, what are you reading right now?!?!
The set from Imagekind are highly graphic, and that’s a style I like in many ways, crisp, clean stylish. But they don’t seem (to me) have a lot of character or depth compared to many SW things I’ve seen over the years.
Can it really be 30 years ago that I stood in line to see Star Wars shortly after it’s release? Wow.
Happy to have been a bad influence! ^_^ My favorite is definitely the Tatooine closely followed by the Endor Moon. I hadn’t seen the reworked masters, love the girl with the AT-AT!
I was dropped off at our local cinema by my grandparents to see the first showing of Star Wars on it’s opening night. I was short the ticket price by about $1.50 but they let me in anyway…my mom realized that i didn’t have enough money and panic’d, they let her in to the theatre to try to find me…she says she wandered up and down the aisles…needless to say, i never saw her! i was too fixated on the big screen!!!
Those are awesome! Every picture has something beautiful in it. Great stuff.
What I’m reading? The Ladies of Grace Adieu by Susanna Clarke right now, and probably soon to start The Wheel of Time series.
Logankstewart: Ladies of Grace Adieu! I love that book. A favorite among the short story collections that I own, with the extra bonus of marvelous Charles Vess illustrations. I plan to read that again sometime soon.
SGist: Thanks again! I think I like Alderaan so much because of the twisted sense of humor the image portrays, with all the pieces of the planet floating around.
Richard: Actually it was 33 years ago for Star Wars! Not to make you, or me, feel old! I remember standing in line for Empire Strikes Back at our local cinema (I saw Star Wars with my parents and brother at the drive-in). When we got in we sat with some friends who had seen the movie already and the girl I was sitting next to preceded to tell me that Darth Vader was Luke’s father. Needless to say, I was pissed at her for doing so. If punching a girl would have been an acceptable activity at that time, I think my 11 year old self would have done just that!
I think the character of the images is in their clean design, and with something so iconic as Star Wars you bring all kinds of background to the work that you wouldn’t necessarily do with similar designs of art that was just “made up”, if that makes any sense.
The reworkings are a hoot!
the reason it seems so impossible that it was so long ago when star wars came out is because they show on television just enough that they never seem that old. So strange that I read something about lord of the rings being 8 yrs old already.. hell at this rate nothing is safe!
The “remastered” paintings are TOO funny!LOVE Star Wars! May the Force be with you!
I like HOTH poster the best. I also like the painting with the girl with AT-AT. Nice SW artwork all the way around.
What I’m reading right now. Tribes by Seth Goden and The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Half way through both and each quite good.
Carl – You failed to mention what you are reading right now. 🙂
These are all so incredible!! Damn I want to get some of these! Love the reworks of the classics as well. They’re great. Right now I’m reading Martin Millar’s Lonely Werewolf Girl and it is AWESOME!! Such a cool book. Think you’d like it!
Jeff: I’m half way through Millhauser’s Dangerous Laughter short story collection and I read Enchanted Night aloud to Mary last night and finished it tonight. I’m also about a third of the way through Persuasion by Jane Austen, about 20 pages away from finishing A Guide to Folktales in Fragile Dialects, and just finished a de Lint short story collection that I’ll be reviewing early next week.
Jo: They are really clever, aren’t they?
Deslily: Too true! Heck, Fellowship will be 10 years old in Dec. of 2011!!!
AlexJ: Yes they are!
HOLY CRAP!!! Are you sleeping any or just reading? Reading in the car? in the shower? in bed? You’re a freaking machine. 🙂
hm, the buddy read person REALLY needs to finish the deLint. *walks away from the computer*
I am also reading The Book of Flying, which I *think* I bought at some point because of you! If memory serves me, anyways. 🙂
There are spectacular. Thanks for mentioning them. I will have them on my blog as well.
Right now, I am reading ‘On Writing’ by Stephen King and ‘Evolve’ an anthology edited by Nancy Kilpatrick.
..oops I forgot to say what book I am reading…The Time Quake which is the 3rd book of the Gidion Trilogy by Linda Buckley-Archer a very nice ya historical time adventure for OUaT of course!
I love the travel posters. Thanks so much for the links, Carl.
Gavin: You’re welcome, enjoy!
Deslily: Wow, you’re ripping through those. Glad you are enjoying them. They sound fun.
Harry: How are you?!?! Great to hear from you. I read “On Writing” many years ago and really enjoyed it. I consider it one of my favorite King books.
Kailana: Yes, I can’t believe I’m waiting on you this time. The world is turned upside down!!! I have indeed talked several times about The Book of Flying, one of the most memorable reading experiences I’ve had in the last decade. That book holds a special place in my heart.
Jeff S: I’ve certainly been spending a lot of free minutes reading, that is for sure, even if it is just a few pages at a time. I’ve been going to the park for lunch every day and reading and making sure I read some before I go to bed, regardless of how late it is. I looked the other day and between books and DVDs I have almost 40 items checked out from the library. I cracked up when I saw that.
40 items checked out!!! I think we may have to classify your house as a new library branch. 🙂
No wonder I feel as if I never have a prayer of you getting Mouse Guard Winter read or the Kingdom of Heaven Director’s Cut DVD watched. 🙂
I told Cameron I would bring him Kingdom of Heaven first and then he could bring it back to me. It feels like a summer movie to me, like Gladiator. I love Gladiator but I generally want to watch it when the sun is blazing outside. Seems more appropriate.
Mouse Guard is still upstairs near the top. Speaking of, is he putting out a third series now?
He’s working on a third series himself but in the mean time he has a 4 issue mini-series coming out this year called Legends of the Mouse Guard were other artists are drawing the issues and he’s doing the covers. I think he’s writing the stories. Check out the last 2 previews under the Archina ( mispelled ) section for the solications for the first 2 issues. Cool covers. I love this series like I love Bone.
I was so shocked when you mentioned that Fellowship is almost 10 years old! GAH! How is that possible? And I forgot to mention what I am currently reading. For fun: Ransom, by David Malouf. With my students: Midsummer Night’s Dream. I SWEAR it gets better each time!
I love those reworkings of classic art with Star Wars characters. I came across a similar site weeks ago mixing robots and classic art, and now I can’t remember where I saw it. I wish I had Photoshop skills because Art Remixes look like a fun hobby. I’ll try and watch The Empire Strkes Back May 21st. Has it been 30 years. Damn.
Oohhh, purty!
I’ve just finished The Underneath for Once Upon a Time, and am about to start the Lace Reader for a group discussion, that I am too late for 🙂
Oh yeah, forgot to tell you what i’m reading @_@!
Right at the moment, The Limehouse Text by Will Thomas & The Demonata: Demon Thief by Darren Shan.
I found the site with robots and art mashup.

Oh, my! I’ll have to stop reading your blog at the reference desk when it’s not busy at work. I laughed so hard at that picture of Yoda, and then I had all the other librarians laughing, too! We are so professional. 🙂 Thanks for brightening up my day.
