Friday Favorites: Picture This

For today’s Friday Favorite I thought I would do something a little different and bring you a few photography sites that I stumbled across this week. The first is the brilliant retro-cool pinball photography of Kevin Tiell.

Although pinball machines are probably more accurately associated with a generation before mine they give me a very nostalgic feeling. I worked at a game room in Tulsa as a part time job when Mary and I were first wed and I spent hours playing the pinball machines there.

Pinball machines themselves are a work of art and I would love to have a few in my basement. I really enjoy the way that Kevin manipulates the photographs to capture the ball’s movement.

I’m curious as to what he does to eliminate the reflection of both himself and his camera from the pictures. These are all so fantastic and bright and richly colored. Go check out his site as there are many more wonderful pictures.

Accidental Mysteries is a site containing weird photographs collected by John and Teenuh Foster.

They call these vernacular photographs and they are primarily pictures that, in my opinion, are slightly creepy or funny based on either the subject matter or accidents in exposure during the development process.

Really old black and white photos often have an eerie quality in and of themselves primarily due to age, especially the really old ones where people didn’t smile. I especially like these pictures with the ominous shadows in them.

Check out their site for many more.

I have always been fascinated with artist’s workspaces. Each part of the creative process interests me and I am thrilled when an artist has pictures of the studios/desks where they work. So you can understand my utter joy when earlier this week when I stumbled across On My Desk.

It is a site where artists of all kinds can send pics of their workspace and do a small post about themselves. Each artist has links to their sites. Many have both art sites and blog sites and I’ve already found more to add to my favorites!

Charlene Chua has a great, wildly colorful site with illustration similar to recent Friday Favorite artists. She also has a blog with various kinds of art that she creates.

I also really liked the work of J. Michael Stovall whose space is shown in the photos above. His work has a Darwyn Cooke vibe. I was excited to learn on his blog that he did some artistic work on the film A Scanner Darkly.

I am so excited about this site. It is updated several times daily and looks to be a source of many more Friday Favorites to come.

Well that’s it, I’ve given you lots to look at today and enough sites to waste many an hour on. Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

  1. I love the pinball photographs, and was suprised how interesting the “On my desk” site is.

    Thanks Carl!

  2. You’re welcome everyone, and thanks for the comments! I highly recommend checking out the rest of Kevin’s pinball pics, the lighting, etc of them is so great.

Glad you liked the On My Desk site, Nic. I am so geeked about that site and it will be an everyday read…in fact I think I’ll add a link to it on my site.

  3. Wow…it took me a while to check everything out this morning (say goodbye to my productivity at work today, clearly I’m anticipating my vacation). I love the pinball images with the longer exposure giving that nice rich and soft color. The black and white is great (I confess that B&W is not my forte), love the slightly sinister vibe throughout. As I was checking out people’s desks I found myself thinking that my vacation will be spent (in part) cleaning mine off. It’s good to work from home but sometimes the desk gets a little out of control.

  4. The colors in the pinball machine pictures are very vibrant, and yes, it is amazing how he captures the movement of the ball.

I wonder how much cleaning of the desk(s) took place before the artists took the pictures?

  5. I love the shot of the dog in the dress. I am sorry that Janet had to go and post that photo of that Chick with Manson. She told me I mean she told that girl that she was going to never EVER post that photo. Ha Janet!

I swear I am not a Manson freak!

  6. I really love the Accidental Mysteries site. I learned all about Vernacular photography. Very fascinating. I’ve always enjoyed those kinds of pictures. I think I have a few myself. Now I know what to call them!
