Take Two and Call Me in the Morning

Yesterday saw the DVD release of two very entertaining movies that are sure to be a good prescription for this past Monday’s new health plan:

This rerelease director’s cut of the film cashes in on the whole sexy factor of the two stars by calling itself an “unrated” version. I have seen nothing in reviews to indicate that ‘unrated’ translates into ‘nudity’ which is of course the first thing that springs to mind. This movie had such a great sense of humor running through it that I see the giant ‘unrated’ title as a great tongue-in-cheek piece of advertising that will get people to buy it just to see what is on it.

The two disk set includes the new cut of the film that runs 14 minutes longer, and:

Feature-Length Commentary By The Director
Deleted Scenes Including An Alternate Ending
Doug’s Film School Sequence
Breakdowns With The Director, Including Animatics, Storyboards And A Major Action Sequence Not Included In The Film
Confidential Files Featuring Secret Footage
Behind The Scenes Documentary
Shooting School Combat Training Featurette
Photo Gallery And More

Mr. and Mrs. Smith was a black comedy that I really enjoyed (my review here) and I look forward to seeing what this extended version has to offer.

The second DVD release that I am excited about is:

I was pleased with the second film of this (supposed) trilogy (review here) and have looked forward to its DVD release since the moment I walked out of the theatre. Great fun, and Kate Beckinsale to boot! This is a bare-bones release with only a few extra features and most likely an unrated extended cut will find its way to store shelves in the near future as did the first movie. If you enjoyed the first film at all you will enjoy this one.

Speaking of DVD’s and men’s health I borrowed Jeff’s copy of Sin City, the recut, extended, unrated version and am amazed with this film all over again (my review here).

This is a special edition DVD set done right. It contains both the theatrical release of the movie and the extended cut. The behind the scenes featurettes are terrific and watching these alone makes me believe that eventhough this isn’t my favorite comic book movie it is indeed the best comic book movie ever made. No comic book film thus far has translated the look, feel, story, etc. into the film format like Sin City has. And as someone who has been frustrated by great comics turned into crappy movies (LXG anyone?) I can really appreciate that. I haven’t been able to view the extended cut yet but the extras on the two disk set are really terrific. There is alot of fun stuff for DVD geeks on this one. You can actually watch the entire film in a green screen version without the special effects thrown in.

Well, that’s all the doctor has time for today. Get out there, get healthy, and do your part to keep the entertainment industry alive and well.

  1. Those are all films I’ve seen, but would like to see again. Don’t think I’d buy Mr & Mrs Smith, but it’d be fun to rewatch it.

  2. Only 15 bucks at Best Buy…probably cheaper this week at Walmart, but I hate Walmart with a passion so I’ll stick to BB.

  3. Personally, I was bored with M&M Smith. Saw it all coming and couldn’t see their characters, only Pitt and Jolie. Never saw Sin City, sounds religious.

  4. James and I got bored with Smith too. We turned it off before we got halfway through it.

I am just not that into movies right now, I guess.

I despise Wal-Mart too Carl, but it is a necessary evil that I have to visit several times a week. We’ve had to spend 300 dollars there this week alone just on food and household items. The thought of that place makes my blood pressure go up.

  5. MMS has an admittedly slow build up…which is actually part of its charm in my opinion…and once they both realize who they each really are it is so fun. Especially the accidental shooting/car wreck scene and Pitt’s dialogue during that. Very fun. Vince Vaughn has some great lines right after that too. Can’t believe you guys got bored with it. I can understand the not liking Pitt or Jolie as there are several actors I don’t like and I have a hard time getting into their films because of it. Ever since 12 Monkeys though I have enjoyed Pitt…Snatch, Fight Club, Ocean’s 11, this…he isn’t just a pretty boy, he has great comedic sensibilities that make him fun to watch. And I wasn’t big on Jolie at all until this movie.

And on another note, I’m just glad my wife makes most of the Wal-mart trips…she’s a saint for doing it. If I had to go every week I would seriously be behind bars right now for killing someone. Seriously. I honestly think one of two things happen: either Wally world attracts those with no common sense OR once a person enters the door they lose their damn mind. Either way I’m surprised there aren’t more homicides at Walmart. (Watch me get arrested now for alleged Walmart murder threats) 😉

  6. We need to get together and have a guys night Tom to introduce you to Sin City. A religion? Well, there are some heavenly bodies and many people end up meeting their maker, so you might be right about that.

  7. You people and your dirty movies. Shame on you all. I can’t believe anyone would recommend a movie that glamorizes promiscuity like A. Jolie and B. Pitt! And don’t get me started on the likes of “Sin City”. That’s Las Vegas if you ask me.

  8. Let he…or she…who hasn’t watched all 3 American Pie movies….or the “promiscuity”-laden Battlestar Galactica cast the first stone! 😉

  9. And on a Sin City note, if you do watch the extras on the expanded set Robert Rodriguez’s 15 minute flick school is awesome. It is so cool how they filmed this movie.

  10. No matter (it was probably Tommy boy), the sentiments are still valid on both sides of the issue when one is talking about “naughty” movies. 😉

  11. And on a less naughty movie note I really like the first Transporter movie. Fun, understated action movie. Mary and I just watched Transporter 2….very goofy, way too implausible, film. Its sad how silly they made the second one. The first isn’t Gone with the Wind, but at least it wasn’t as downright ridiculous and cartoony like this one. Jason Statham (Snatch, Transporter) is great however and needs to be in more action movies.

  12. While I was looking up how to spell Jason Statham’s name I came across this new poster for Lady in the Water:

Kinda cool and creepy at the same time. Love the colors. Can’t wait for this one.

  13. You’re right, Jules. Wasn’t me. It’s dangerous when two people use the same computer! You make a mistake once and it will repeatedly bite you in the butt.

  14. From man-boobs to butt biting, the last 2 days’ posts have become anatomy nightmares! For the record I liked the American Pie movies too (my poor wife, she cringes every time I mention them). And I’m actually one of the few people who like the last one the best (love the romance between Jason Biggs’ and Alison Hannigan’s characters). I showed Mary an extremely edited version of American Wedding and she just didn’t get my affection for them. Oddly enough Mary doesn’t remember what it was like to be a teenage boy! 😉

Back on the Sin City, I have to say that Robert Rodriguez is becoming one of my favorite directors. I find him interesting mostly because he can make such sweet, innocent movies like Spy Kids and Shark Boy and Lava Girl and also very bloody action movies and he does a good job at both. His ’10 Minute Cooking School’ on the SC DVD is hilarious. I thought it was a joke at first but he actually has a roughly 10 minute cooking class where he teaches you how to make the infamous ‘Sin City Breakfast Tacos’ that he claims they lived off of during shooting. Evidently he did this on another DVD and it got such popular feedback that he decided to do it again on the SC disk. Very fun. I like listening to him talk because even after so many successful films he still sounds like a guy who just gets a kick out of trying new things and making movies. He doesn’t sound stuck up or pretentious at all. Even if this movie isn’t your thing the extras are worth watching. I showed Mary some, including the cooking school, eventhough she would commit hari kari before watching Sin City.

  15. Revenge, Karen, sweet revenge. Okay so the lady movie is a definite must see. Ron’s daughter already has the look. She is going to be great. LOVED her in The Village. Great casting is going to win that movie. BTW there is still hope for Mary, I think I got Karen to actually see Underworld, it’s coming in the mail.

    –Left by the Real Tom

  16. $15? that’s probably not for the special edition Underworld 2? … that’s what i want.. no. NEED. lol

as for Robert Rodriguez, he may be the director i hate the most then. lol.. not only did i hate Sin City with all my being, but i also wanted to gouge my eyes out & puncture my eardrums while watching THE WORST MOVIE EVER MADE… Shark Boy & Lava Girl. lol
    .. no, i never exaggerate.

  17. My kids really enjoyed S.B & L.G. Of course they are 8, 7 and 4 years old so that explains it.

I have to see Lady in the Water at the theatre. I really enjoy his movies. I always feel like I’ve gone on a fun ride after seeing them.

I knew that was you Tom.

  18. I agree Tom. She’s gonna be in the next Spiderman movie as well and I look forward to seeing her in that.

The only edition of Underworld 2 that is out right now is called a “special edition” but we all know that they will do an ‘unrated collector’s edition’ two disk thing in a few months.

I haven’t seen Shark Boy although I heard it was awful but the first Spy Kids movie was great. And I really like El Mariachi, and Desperado, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico…I can understand from a content standpoint why you didn’t like Sin City but if you look at the graphic novel and then watch it purely for Rodriguez’s ability to take Frank Miller’s art/story and bring it to life on the big screen there is no arguing that he has real talent as a director. That is even more apparent when you watch how most of the actors weren’t even together onstage at the same time and yet he was able to script their scenes so well and set them up just right that they worked perfectly together in post production. It is just an amazing feat.

The worst movie ever made???? You obviously haven’t seen Aeon Flux! LOL!!!

  19. I don’t think any of us have gotten together as a group to see one of Shyamalan’s films. I think we should try to hook up for opening weekend of Lady in Water. This should be enough forewarning to get babysitting for the kids!

And I think you (Tom and Karen) need to pick special internet names like Babs or Lola (for Tom) to sign off each of your comments with so I know who is who.

  20. I’m a huge fan of Rodriguez’s films. I didn’t see the Shark Boy one, but I’ve sat through a few of the Spy Kids films with my sister and they are entertaining enough. I especially enjoyed watching the second one after seeing Lost, and noticing all the similarities 😉

But my fav film of his has to be Once Upon a Time In Mexico. I love that film. And I will be buying Sin City at some stage, the extras sound more than worth it.

Also, that poster for lady in the Water is class. That is one film I’m really looking forward to this year.

  21. This is the one to get Fence. I really like Once Upon a Time in Mexico as well. Johnny Depp is just great in it.

  22. Well we saw Underworld and Karen loved it. I should have seen it again before I saw Evolution. It was great the second time. Saw X-men 3 again Sunday, better the second time as well.

  23. I probably won’t see X3 again in the theatre but will get it right away on DVD. I’m watching Evolution right now, just took a break for a few minutes.
