Envy

“There’s never enough time to do all the nothing you want.”
~Calvin (from Calvin and Hobbes fame)

Is it really only Thursday? Aye Caramba! I am seriously envying children and summer vacation right now. Especially kids who are old enough to entertain themselves and actually enjoy summer vacation.

I truly believe that this is one area where we are cheated as adults. We should get at least one, true, I’m-a-kid-and-school-is-out summer vacation as adults. There should be some way to deposit just one of those childhood summers in the future bank to be used at a later date.

Can you imagine? Having June, July and August to play in the sun, read books, watch movies, putter around in the yard, have day long excursions with your friends, camp out, swim in the creek, have imaginary adventures. I would love to do that as an adult. The closest I came to anything like that was last year when Tori was gone for a week and Mary and I took that week off to watch movies, read, veg out and go on our bed and breakfast jaunt.

We’ve been robbed, my adult friends. If anyone can figure out a way to get this inequity worked out please let me know!

In summer we live out of doors, and have only impulses and feelings, which are all for action, and must wait commonly for the stillness and longer nights of autumn and winter before any thought will subside; we are sensible that behind the rustling leaves, and the stacks of grain, and the bare clusters of the grape, there is the field of a wholly new life, which no man has lived; that even this earth was made for more mysterious and nobler inhabitants than men and women. In the hues of October sunsets, we see the portals to other mansions than those which we occupy.
~Henry David Thoreau

  1. Man is this the longest week? I thought Tuesday was Thursday. Must be the late evenings and the almost instantaneous mornings.

  2. Hello? Become a teacher! They get summers off.

Before she retired, my mom would always twist the knife by regaling me with the list of projects she had for her summers off. That was so wrong.

  3. I think I’d rather poke my eyes out with a lead pencil than be a teacher. Working with kids all day long in a setting where you have precious little control over them and having to watch everything you say and do for fear of being sued by some irrate parent…no thanks! I have the highest respect for teachers because that is a job I just don’t think I could do.

And I felt the same way Tom. I’ve been convinced almost every day this week that it should be Thursday and now that it is I feel completed messed up. I’m so thankful that I am only working Monday next week and then I’m off until the next Monday.

  4. Maybe in a year or two summers for me will be more play than work. I just need to get Anjelia grown up a bit. She is really hard right now. Of course, no matter what I’ll always have the responsibility of feeding everyone and keeping the house clean. Bummer. Even
when I was a kid I did most of the housework cuz my parents both worked a lot.

It was great having 100 acres to explore each summer, either on my bike or go cart. Cow paths make great “roads”. I sure miss that kind of freedom.

  5. Well you could wait and take all you holiday’s in one go. That’d be a monthish. Course then you wouldn’t get to take random days off at the other times of the year.

  6. Me too Jules. We used to walk the cow trails all the time. There was one especially fun one that people used to dump their trash on and of course a trash pile is like a gold mine to a little kid. One summer I was riding my bike up that particular trail and started finding unopened pop cans littered here and there. Pretty soon I started finding whole crates of pop. Then I found a pay phone. I ran home in a frenzy carrying as much pop as I could and excitedly told my parents. Turns out someone had robbed the local golf course and tried unsuccessfully to break into the pay phone. The sheriff was kind enough to let us keep all the pop and we had pop all summer long. I still remember how my heart raced and how excited I was at this adventurous discovery!

  7. I’ve thought of that Fence. I get a little over 5 weeks vacation every year so I could take an entire month off and still have 7 days to spread around throughout the year. Of course work would kill me for doing so but its fun to at least think about once in awhile.

  8. What a great find, Carl! That must have been like the Mother Lode to a kid! I usually found unsuspecting baby animals to bring home. Somehow my kind parents always let me keep them.

  9. T – you’re seriously about the 5th person that I have heard say that Tuesday seemed like Thursday. I felt the same way – that’s weird!

  10. Must be a full moon week or something…or maybe it was the whole 6/6/06 thing!!!! 😉

It was an amazing moment in a young boy’s life Karen, no doubt about that. My brother, a friend and I also “discovered” a huge bull snake on that same cow trail one day and it scared the living daylights out of us. Sadly that same trail today is part of someone’s driveway up to their home and is private property so I’ve never been able to walk Mary and Tori up there and show them my old haunts. We used that road to ride three wheelers, and motorcycles well into our teens and even parked out there…also as teenagers…and drank beer. There’s half a lifetime of fond memories out there.

  11. I think about summer vacation everytime I go to my parents’. I guess they never tell us enough that “those are the best days of our lives”, uh…

  12. I also remember that cow trail! How we found you,Jason and the Osbornes swimming in the mudd-there wasn’t a flesh colored area, showing even your hair was matted with brown dirty mud!! I still have pictures of this adventure. I was quite angry and used the hose to spray you off outside and made you take off your clothes in the garage before getting in the tub!! We used the same trail for walks and to pick wildflowers. Another favorite for you boys was the bridge-We climbed underneath not to long ago and checked out the “messages” written below-oh my!!!!

  13. You were able to get down under the bridge at your ages? Good for you! (ha,ha!). Yes, we wrote some pretty nasty stuff down there long ago. Almost got in some good fights over it too. I remember doing alot of skinny dipping in the creek and in makeshift ponds along the cow trail. I remember getting hosed off alot too! 😉

  14. If I had a summer off, I’d just waste it trying to find a job or something. And I’d look forward, and back, and realize that I wasn’t doing anything and feel ashamed of myself, and then sick that the whole thing was going to end.

And then I’d spend the rest of the summer gaming in my basement with pringles, popsicles, and the beverage of my choice, but it better be carbonated.
