Keeping with the spirit of the journey, a driving theme for the Once Upon a Time Challenge, come travel with me to a few places with news that will delight your literary heart, nourish your creative side, feed your inner geek beast, etc…
But first:
Are you blue? If so, then you are not alone.

So am I, because Lisa Snellings-Clark held a pre-sale auction on ebay this week and I missed out on snagging an all new little BLUE poppet for myself. Oh woe is me! The pre-sale continues for little red and little pink poppets, however, so don’t delay!
Fear not, intrepid poppet purchasers, I have it on good authority from Lisa herself that the little blues will be among the items going up for the Summer Solstice Sale, beginning June 23rd! Keep your eye on the Slaughterhouse Studios Site for more information.

With all this talk of prize giveaways here on the Droppings, I had no plans of actually winning anything. Imagine my surprise when I got an email saying that I had won a random drawing for the first six issues of the Gail Simone/Neil Googe comic Welcome to Tranquility.
What did I have to do for this prize? Absolutely nothing, except for subscribing to Pink Raygun! Pink Raygun is: a webzine for the modern fangirl. It’s a smart and savvy place to discuss and read about science fiction, fantasy and horror in all of their forms, be it television, movies, books or comics. And you know what? They include us fanboys as well! It is a really fun site featuring interviews, reviews, etc. about all the things we fantasy, sci-fi, comics geeks enjoy. The site also features a gallery with some really fun pink raygun art. Check them out and subscribe!

Segueing from yesterday’s Gaiman Prize reminder, I point you to Chris over at Stuff as Dreams who has a plethora of Neil Gaiman-related news for your perusal. Congratulations, Neil!
Over at Friends of English Magic (a great site, especially for pre-Stardust information) they had a slightly different take on the award winners, feel free to join in on our discussion over there. Neil has!

It seems like the Silver Surfer himself is looking at me askance:
If you, like others, thought my assessment of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer was utter nonsense and that I have indeed lost my damn mind, here are a couple of reviews from the other camp, one in which I caused much consternation:
Fence’s review
Fantasy and Sci-Fi Lovin’s review
For those who like Young Adult literature, Colleen Ward of Chasing Ray has organized a week long Summer Blog Blast which tours you, the reader, around various sites to partake of interviews with a number of young adult authors. It is a fantastic idea and one that features some great authors, including:
Shaun Tan
Holly Black
Kazu Kibuishi (love his Bolt City comics)
Christopher Golden
David Brin
and many, many others.

From High Brow to Low Brow, allow me to end today’s post with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog’s coverage of the recent Tony Awards. I have the courage to admit, at the risk of further lowering my credibility, that I have always enjoyed the Triumph sketches on Conan. Here you go (not safe for work, by the way…unless you have a very understanding place of employment!)
That should be enough to keep you distracted from your work this fine Tuesday. I hope everyone’s week is progressing well. Three days left in the Once Upon a Time Challenge! Keep reading!!!
I really like David Brin, though I’m surprised to see him in this company, I wouldn’t really classify him in the young adult genre, though of course there is lots of overlap since in my experience, kids (the target audience of “young adult” fiction) read adult books and adults read kids books.
He’s included because he is just starting his foray into the young adult genre with Sky Horizon, coming out this August.
Totally unrelated to your post, Carl, but I’ve managed to track down the Dave McKean postcard set from our local restaurant. Would you email me your address so I can post it to you? Ta.
way to go! The giveaway man wins something for himself!
I’m sad that the fantasy challenge is coming to an end.. *sniffle* it’s sure made me buy some books I may not have.. and i’m glad I did!
Like I said yesterday, Deslily, I feel a bit bittersweet about it myself.
Equiano…after I’m done fainting, I’ll do that. Thanks!!!
I did enjoy Fantastic Four. I think I would have liked it more if Dr Doom wasn’t in it.. or was played by a more sinister actor.. or at least a creepier voice.
And I was right. Alba’s look bugged the crap out of me the whole movie. She would have looked better maybe if they had put makeup on her to make her look less tan. No natural blonde looks remotely that tan unless she’s doing the fake-n-bake.
I didn’t quite understand the tan either, Angela.
I also think Dr. Doom should have been played by someone else. I’ve seen too many episodes of Charmed and a few of Nip/Tuck and I cannot get the images of the other characters he’s played out of my mind when I see him onscreen. That’s my issue, but there it is.
And I forgot to mention that Bridge to Terabithia comes out on DVD today. Ignore the terribly misleading commercials for this film but buy it anyway, or at least rent it. It is a wonderful story. A life affirming tale that is certainly worth watching. I’ll be picking up my copy today as I loved it.
Triumph was hilarious as always!
Is the Bridge to Terabithia too emotionally mature for the girls or do you think they’d enjoy it?
Did you get an old typewriter like you wanted?
Hmmmmm…I’m not sure, Jules. You are welcome to borrow it. It is about the death of a friend, so it really depends on whether or not you feel like your kids are ready to deal with that. There is a younger sister character in the film that is much closer to your kids’ age who is a part of the story that they could relate to. Feel free to borrow it and watch it with James first if you want.
Yes, Mary got that for me for free from a guy at her work that no longer wanted it. And it works, too, which is cool.
Someone please tell me I was not the only one to have a bit of a fangirlish moment when seeing Neil’s comment. Chris, Carl? I’m counting on you 😛
I need to both read and watch Bridge to Terabithia.
Are you referring to the Friends of English Magic post, Nymeth? Of course I went weak at the knees in true fanboy style. I did that again when Charles Vess directed a comment directly to me in the post above that one over at the same site!
Yes! I’m glad I’m not alone 😀
Lol…definitely some fanboy stuff going on over there Nymeth. That site is dangerous for us guys and gals. Too many cool people stopping in! I saw Vess’ comment too, Carl, I was getting all excited for you! ok..ahem…
I plan on picking up Terabithia when I drop off the God awful Pulse DVD today. Really looking forward to that one. And that typewriter is just so cool!! I want one now…You have so much cool stuff!!
I’m happy for you that you won something cool since you have put together such a wonderful package of prizes… and they keep getting better. And here’s an FYI that was surprising. Butler gave FF three stars. I’m anxious to see it and Bridge to Tarabithia.
I think Robert Butler just did that to mess with me, Pat! 😉
For what it’s worth, the review of FF on my site only reflects the opinion of one of the authors on my site. I haven’t seen it yet and I doubt I’ll be as hard on it as Stewart. He’s much more of a purist than I am.
I think Stewart’s review is a reflection of the majority of people who have seen the film and I certainly respect it. I obviously went into it with much different expectations than most and I understand the purist aspect. My friends and I who enjoyed FF 2 have laughingly said we will probably be just like Stewart come August when Stardust comes out if it doesn’t meet our expectations. I really understand his feelings regarding how I, or people like me, could possibly like this. I’ve had those same feelings about others and their book and movie likes, so I found his statements entertaining and I saw alot of myself in his assessement of the situation.
Can’t wait to get my hands on a Blue Poppet (or three).
Oh cool! I want a blue poppet next.
I just was letting you know that I have officially completed the reading challenge. I’m a bit sad that it’s all over but I am definitely not done reading fastasy books. I just started reading Alice in Wonderland and I have purchased several of the books that have been reviewed for this challenge. Again and again, thank you Carl!
I posted on Chris’s site too, but here’s another Gaiman fanboi (or girl) link from geeksofdoom
I’m thrilled to hear Lisa is planning another E-bay sale. It’s poppet time for me!
