Another full weekend has come and gone. Friday night was, of course, Fantastic Four. Saturday continued the comic book madness as I attended the small but entertaining annual MO-KAN Comics Conspiracy. I was excited to attend primarily to see Ryan Sook. Mr. Sook is currently doing the artwork for the Zatanna run of DC’s Seven Soldiers event.

The series has been very entertaining thus far and though few and far between I’ve always enjoyed Zatanna comics. Ryan Sook’s previous work includes the Arkham Asylum: Living Hell 6 issue miniseries and a run on the Hellboy spin-off comic B.P.R.D. (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense).

I was able to attend the con with Jeff and his children. To quote Jeff it was fun to see the convention through their eyes. They were each promised one purchase so it was fun to see them look at action figures and collectible cards. I managed to make it out of the convention with my pockets only $15 lighter. I hadn’t purchased anything when Jeff pointed out that Ryan Sook had practice pages that he was selling for $5 so I snagged one with a loosely drawn Zatanna sketch and one the view of a woman’s head and shoulders from just behind her. It had a Phantom of the Opera reference on it so I’m assuming the sketch was of Christine. Mr. Sook was quite kind and he gave a sketch with some cars drawn on it to Jeff’s son, Zack. It was a very nice gesture.
I was finally able to eat at Bate’s City Barbeque! You’re right Julie, the fries are incredible!
Afternoon found us with my wife’s penguin-loving cousin at the local independent theatre viewing March of the Penguins. It was a delightful little movie that I’ll post a review on this evening.
Speaking of movies I saw a wonderful new trailer for Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride which makes me even more excited for this September release.

Go here for the newest trailer (click on Quicktime Trailer, not Teaser).
Also saw a very fun preview for the first full-length Wallace and Gromit movie:

Two fun animated Halloween-ish offerings this fall…how ghoulishly delightful!
The rest of the weekend was spent fixing (I hope…fingers crossed) Abby and Mike’s computer and watching the second disk of Firefly. I’ll be posting about that as soon as we’ve finished the other 2 disks. For now I’ll just mention that it is go se, fong luh awesome!
Happy Monday to you all.
Today I raise my DVD player on high in recognition of July 11th, 1895 when the first motion picture was shown in Paris by the Lumiere brothers. Without motion pictures I would have far less to post about and Tom and I would have to reserve our disagreements to cave drawings.
This date also marks the birthdate in 1274 of one Robert the Bruce who would grow up to be King of Scotland. He would also go on to be wonderfully portrayed by Angus Macfadyen in one of my favorite motion pictures, Braveheart.
Oh the shame, I didn’t know the exact date of the Lumière showing.
You should be ashamed Anne, because as you know myself and all good Americans know every event of historical and cultural significance that happened on each day of the year throughout our 200+ years of existence! 🙂
Must be that lackluster Paris public school system!
Bates City Barbeque is the best! I grew up eating it and don’t really care to eat barbeque anywhere else!
The bbq beef sandwich was pretty tasty as well, loved the sauce, and as I said…the fries were terrific. Went to the one in Shawnee which is a very nice little place.
That movie, the Curse of the Were-Rabbit, reminds me of one of my favorite series of books as a child.. “Bunnucula.” Those were so stinking cute!
I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw it, Angela. Wonder if they ‘borrowed’ any from that classic or if its just a coincidence.
Thanks again Carl for fixing our computer. Mike hooked it up last night and so far so good! I can’t believe that you didn’t mention in today’s post that you were given the opportunity to spend time with your cute little nephew over the weekend!
The trauma of it must have slipped my mind! Just kidding. Motley was actually quite fun this weekend and I enjoyed watching him jump up and down whenever he was excited about something and also enjoyed the brief nap we took together Friday.
how have i missed the fact of the W&G movie up till now?
& yes, bunnicula was the coolest.
what is it about bunnies that makes them so fun to turn creepy?
I’ve always thought bunnies were a little creepy anyway. They look all cute and cuddly but I heard horror stories growing up about how much it hurts if they bite you so I’ve always been a little leery of them. I also remember one summer when it was extremely hot and my friend’s rabbits were all dead and stiff as boards…a bit creepy.
Plus you have Harvey, and Donnie Darko…I just don’t know, but they do lend themselves to the horrific.
But of course Bugs Bunny was just the coolest so not all bunnies are creepy.
Me too, jenn see. W&G totally missed my radar.
Carl, speaking of psycho bunnies, you read WE3?
This is a comic, right? If so I remember it looking interesting when it was in Previews. What are your thoughts? If you liked it I’ll have to have Jeff look for it for me.
Yep, a comic. It’s very future tech and kinda sad.
I’ll look into it!
We3 has been collected into TPB form and we just happen to have one at the shop. She pays me to tempt you ya know. 🙂 I can point it out to you tommarrow. It has Frank Quietly art ( Authority & Earth 2 ) which I love. Grant Morrison is the storyteller. Looked interesting. Government experiments on animals turning them into well … you just have to check it out. I don’t want to spoil anything.
Also speaking of bunnies. I like them at a distance. We had some as pets when I was little and they weren’t any fun. You can’t really get them to do anything. Plus they bite and they poop A LOT. It is amazing how much poop can come out of one small animal.
Lastly I also thought of the muscial Buffy episode when you mentioned bunnies. There a song in it that mentions bunnies in a funny way. Anya questions why bunnies eat so much carrots ” what do they need such good eyesight for anyway! ” It’s one of the best episodes of Buffy. Truely classic.
Sidenote: Any other ” Browncoats ” on the blog besides Carl, Mary, Keri and I ? Can’t wait until Serenity hits theaters September 30th.
Firefly reruns start on Sci-fi channel Friday nights in July. I believe they start next Friday the 22nd. Sci-fi is going to be showing all 13 episodes in the order they were intended to be shown. Joss Whedon put his heart into this show.
Its awesome. Can’t wait to post about it after we’re done watching them.
Ahh, the Browncoats…all for Independence and all. I have to admit, Jeff, I love the opening song! “Burn the land, boil the sea, you can’t take the sky from me!”
Speaking of terrifying rabbits, what about the one from Monty Python’s Holy Grail? Now that was terrifying.
Mary, I love that opening song, too.
Alas, Monty Python’s Holy Grail is another classic I haven’t seen along with Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. In fact the only Monty Python movie I’ve seen is The Meaning of Life. I need to see Holy Grail and I’m told The Life of Brian is excellent also.
I’ll watch Monty Python with you. Its always fun to watch it with a virgin…though if you end up not thinking Holy Grail is funny I will look like a total fool as I fall over myself laughing.
Hi, there! Michele pointed me in your direction. ; )
Thanks for the heads up on the Wallace and Gromit movie. WooHoo!
I can’t wait for it…it should be a ball!!!
