On this humpday I bring you movies past and future. This past Friday I ended up being fortunate enough to attend Buffy/Firefly creator Joss Whedon’s birthday party. Of a sort, that is. Theatres worldwide screened Serenity to raise money for Joss’ favorite charity Equality Now. Mary, Tori and I joined Mary’s brother John and his son Josh in a theatre in Kansas City that I did not know existed: Screenland. It is a very cool retro facility that is used as a meeting center and also to show first run independent movies as well as older films. Halfway back in this 150 seat theatre are soft, comfy red leather recliners. We were among the early Browncoats and were thus able to enjoy the film in lavish comfort. It is a really cool theatre that, on the first friday of every month, shows “classic” 80’s films. The next one is Princess Bride which was the first date movie that we attended.
We had just recently watched Firefly with Tori and it was great that her first viewing of Serenity was not only on the big screen but also in the presence of 150 true Browncoats. The audience cheered and clapped and laughed uproariously. It stands as one of the best movie audiences I have ever been it.
It was a fun night and a welcome escape from reality for awhile. The theatre manager mentioned that they might do a full day Firefly marathon there soon. I’ll be keeping my eyes open for that.

As if I am not excited enough about Pirates and Lady in the Water coming up next month, the just released the teaser trailer for Spiderman 3 and it looks to be an awesome film. I wonder if, like Star Wars Ep. III, if this one will be too dark for the kiddies. This trailer is debuting this weekend with Superman Returns, but I couldn’t wait to watch it and share it…enjoy.
Enjoy Wednesday everyone, we can make it.
Oooh, Firefly on the big screen. I’d be there.
“Hump-day do the humpday dance, do the hump-day, do the humpday dance.” Spiderman looks awesome. Julian doesn’t know it yet, but him and I are seeing Superman Returns today. Hope they play the spidey trailer there.
That’s so cool Tom, I’m sure he’ll love the surprise! They should play the Spidey trailer there.
I know Fence, I’d LOVE to see Firefly on the big screen.
I saw Click last night…not your average Adam Sandler movie, but at the same time, it is.
I like most Adam Sandler films but to be honest with you the only reason I want to see this one is for Kate Beckinsale. She’s been a fav ever since her debut in Much Ado About Nothing.
UMMMMMM…KATTE BECKENSALE….DROOLL-(BEST HOMER SIMPSON IMPERSONATION HERE)

It’s good to know that you do NOT read the comments that your readers post to your site. Jeff and I will continue to discuss movie theaters in the metro area without fear you may discover them: http://www.stainlesssteeldroppings.com/?p=348
But I am delighted to hear you and the family enjoyed yourself. π
Ohhhh I want to see Pirates, Lady in the Water and also Superman!!
I think its great that you actually think I retain what I read (and I do read them all). That’s why I enjoy rereading books so much. If enough time goes by I actually forget some minor and some major plot points and I’m excited when I recall them. I guess I should have more accurately stated:
“a theatre that maybe somewhere in the recesses of my mind I remember hearing about but cannot recall for the life of me”.
Actually a more “true” statement is that I had heard the name Screenland but I thought it was the new theatre they built or were building over by the racetrack…in fact I actually said this to Mary or someone. I was so shocked when we started driving to Screenland to see how close it was to downtown, which I’ve been to many times, and had never stumbled across this.
Forgive my poor memory/ignorance. I’ll try to be better commenter rememberer. π
I really enjoyed my experience at the Screenland. We will definitely have to visit it again soon.
Just got back from Superman with the boy. That was fantastic. NO spoilers… It was great, retro, story, Kevin Spacey ( don’t make him angry). Brandon R. will always be Superman. He doesn’t have the talent to be like Harrison Ford that can morph into other characters. Two hours and thirty something I thought went by fast. Good to see the franchise back. Alot of mediocre reviews but you’ll either like the retro or you’ll have wanted it modern. Ebert I think is stuck on C.Reeve being the man and that is what alot of people can’t get over but Routh will be better in the next one as well as more comfortable and credible.
SEE IT IN THE THEATER!!!
Oh yeah the Spidey 3 trailer. Will he ever reach a point of sanity? It looks cool but man he seems to have some real psycho issues again in this one.
Can anyone be sane who runs around in spandex?
Glad you enjoyed Supes.
Tom… so did Julian like the movie? Just curious. My kids are 6 and 9 and they loved it. My daughter was pretending to fly around after the movie.
mosker… That cracked me up. I’ve always had this feeling that Carl just skims over our comments. We now know it’s all about HIM and HIS comments. π Just kidding buddy.
Is someone here? For a second there I had the distinct impression that someone was interrupting my own internal dialogue. Now…where was I?
Jeff, yes Julian LOVED it! He told me during the movie that he wanted the life size superman at Wal-mart. He also did not like me hitting his leg when s-man would fly in or show up. I stopped at walmart and got him a s-man shirt before the movie to doubly surprise him, ( would have got one for me but they didn’t have 2x muscular- heh-heh). It was a great night. Stopped at QT for some goodies, got a free popcorn w/ moviewatchers card–BTW on Wednesdays AMC has free popcorn w/ moviewatcher card–. The only downer is I think I left my wallet in the theater. Have to call today and see if it’s still there. What a pain to lose your wallet.
Elaina loves Superman. Do you think a nearly five year old could watch it Tom? It would be so fun to take our three older girls. I wonder if it will be at the drive in? Much cheaper for all of us.
If you go on Saturdays to AMC before noon every ticket is only $4. Its a pretty sweet deal. That’s what Mary and I did when we went and saw The Lake House.
looooved Supes.. i posted a review.
the Spidey 3 trailer before the movie gave me chills.. this could be the best one yet!
counting down the days till Pirates & Lady too..
I think there is enough action for little boys and enough emotion for little girls. Only one sexual innuendo and it was quick, doubt the kids even got it. Yeah I think the girls could sit through it, but MAKE them pee beforehand. (And make James pee, also).
Oh and yes they found my wallet. Thank God.
While I’m thinking about it, the trailer to “Hollywoodland” came on. Now I know the feelings about Ben Affleck, but this was a little ironic that we were about to watch S-man and they made a movie about George Reeves.
So glad they found your wallet, that would’ve sucked big time!!!!
Hey! My girls like action, too! I haven’t sissified them that much!
Girls + love story = long attention span
Drive in? Did you hear the story of our drive in?… Actually it is a good deal. $7.00 for 2 flicks. Not that the kiddos could stay awake until 2:00a.m. but it was all in all (on the hole-Jaden’s pie hole) pretty fun. Let’s all just go.
Don’t go to the I-70 Drive In, that’s taking your life and placing it in dangerous white trash hands, I kid you not!
No doubt, the twin was where we went. Just a whiff of reefer was the worst we saw/smelled.
Julie… I think your 5 year old would be entertained. My son Zachary is 6 and he did pretty well. He did have to go to the bathroom once but the movie is over two hours so I couldn’t blame him. Of course I can’t complain because my wonderful wife took him so I didn’t have to miss anything. Thank you Keri!
Tom… so glad to her your son loved it. Glad to hear they found your wallet too.
I just checked out the Spidey 3 trailer all I can say is WooHoo! I can’t wait. Spider-man 2 is my favorite super hero film and I’m hopeing Sam Raimi can repeat the magic. Sure would be great to see Hellboy 2 next year also but alas I don’t think it will be out until 2008.
Finally, some mileage outta the whole “Doc Connors” thing in the first movie.
Yeah, I can’t wait.
I went to see Superman Returns the other day and got to see this trailer on the big screen…very cool!
