R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril VI

(Image credit: Flight, by Melissa Nucera)

Summer 2011: record-breaking heat waves, drought, flooding, earthquakes, tornadoes–we have had it all. For most of us who have experienced it, the turning of the calendar to reveal a September 1st date is not going to feel all that different. Summer has not yet relinquished her hold. And she has a right to hold on. After all, Autumn does not begin for another three weeks, and even then Summer may greedily hunger for a little more time. Let us pray otherwise.

Regardless of what my thermometer tells me, my heart tells me that autumn is here and that it is once again time to revel in things ghostly and ghastly, in stories of things that go bump in the night. It is time to trail our favorite detectives as they relentlessly chase down their prey, to go down that dark path into the woods, to follow flights of fantasy and fairy tale that have a darker heart than their spring time brethren. To confront gothic, creepy, horror stories in all their chilling delight.

Every September 1st through October 31st for the last 5 years I have hosted the R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril Challenge, affectionately known as the R.I.P. Challenge. I began this reader event, I blinked, and now I am hosting this for the 6th time. Wow, that is so hard to believe.

The purpose of the R.I.P. Challenge is to enjoy books that could be classified as:

Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.

The emphasis is never on the word challenge, instead it is about coming together as a community and embracing the autumnal mood, whether the weather is cooperative where you live or not.

There are two simple goals for the R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril VI Challenge:

1. Have fun reading.
2. Share that fun with others.

As I do each and every year, there are multiple levels of participation (Perils) that allow you to be a part of R.I.P. VI without adding the burden of another commitment to your already busy lives. There is even a one book only option for those who feel that this sort of reading is not their cup of tea (or who have many other commitments) but want to participate all the same.

R.I.P. VI officially runs from September 1st through October 31st. But lets go ahead and break the rules. Lets start today!!!

Multiple perils await you. You can participate in just one, or participate in them all.

Peril the First:

Read four books, any length, that you feel fit (my very broad definitions) of R.I.P. literature. It could be Stephen King or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Ian Fleming or Edgar Allan Poe…or anyone in between.

Peril the Second:

Read two books of any length that you believe fit within the challenge categories.

Peril the Third:

We all want you to participate. This Peril involves reading one book that fits within the R.I.P. definition.

Peril of the Short Story:

I am a big fan of short stories and my desire for them is perhaps no greater than in autumn. I see Poe and Lovecraft in my future for sure. You can read short stories any time during the challenge. When I can, I like to read short stories over the weekend and post about them around that time. Feel free to do this however you want, but if you review short stories on your site, please link to those reviews on the Book Review site.

Peril on the Screen:

This Peril was added last year and proved to be popular, and so it returns. This is for those of us that like to watch suitably scary, eerie, mysterious gothic fare during this time of year. It may be something on the small screen or large. It might be a television show, like Dark Shadows, or your favorite film. If you are so inclined, please post links to any R.I.P.-related viewing you do on to the book review site as well.

Peril of the Group Read:

This Peril is new for this year. I’ve recently discovered the joys of group reading and I posted about three group reads that I am hosting during this year’s R.I.P. Challenge. If you feel so inclined please join us in one (or more) of the planned group reads, information is located here.

In addition to, or instead of, these group read options you may want to host your own. That would be welcome too and if you choose to do so please let me know so that I can advertise them for you.

Again, you may participate in one or all of the various Perils. My one demand: enjoy yourself!

The R.I.P. VI Challenge does not require you to read from a pre-selected list of books, but like many of you I love to get ideas from what others are thinking of reading. If you want to include a pool of potential reads when you sign up, either in the comments or on your own sign up post on your blog (not required for participation), please do!

I will most likely post a reading pool of my own in the next couple of days, including a list of previously read books that I would recommend reading for the challenge.

This challenge is always a joy because of one thing: you! You sharing your passion for books, reading, films, television, etc. helps bring us together and ensures that we all have a great time. Thank each and every one of you who choose to participate on any level. I am honored that you would choose to do so.

Remember that we would love to read any reviews of the books you read or things you watch. Simply visit the R.I.P. VI Review Site (link is conveniently located by clicking the banner in my side bar) and leave a link to your post. These challenges are a great way to make new friends by tempting them to come to your site to read your reviews.

Before I let you go, I want to thank Melissa Nucera for allowing me to use her artwork for this year’s banners. I had a hard time choosing just one so I offer you two choices, The Birds or Dr. Who “Blink” (my silly names) in various sizes below. I will be giving away one small print of each of these images (sans my text additions) to two lucky participants here in the near future. I have also sent Melissa a set of interview questions and will be featuring more of her art (and giveaways) very soon.

Please be sure to visit Melissa’s Etsy site to see more of her wonderful work.

400 X 400 pixels

200 X 200 pixels

400 X 400 pixels

200 X 200 pixels

If you need a custom size of either of these images please let me know and I can make you one from the originals so that they retain their clear resolution.

Before I let you go to sign up, I’d like to also mention another eerie themed event that will go on during the month of October:

Jenn, of Jenn’s Bookshelves, will be hosting the Murder, Monsters, Mayhem event. It will include guest posts, giveaways and all kinds of gothic goodness. I am thrilled to be doing a guest post sometime during the event. Please consider getting more bang for your buck and parlaying your R.I.P. participation into the Triple M event too. You can visit here for more information.

Do not let circumstances fool you. Autumn is here in spirit. It is R.I.P. VI Challenge time.

And so it begins…

  1. Yes! I just picked up a Shirley Jackson anthology in anticipation! I eagerly await everyone else’s reading pools.

    1. Hey, first in! 🙂 Love Shirley Jackson. I want to re-read We Have Always Lived in the Castle at some point. Hope you enjoy and review your anthology. Other than “The Lottery” I haven’t read any of her short fiction.

  2. This is my first time doing this challenge. I’m definitely feeling the urge for some autumnal, atmospheric reads!

    1. It is wonderful to have you joining in with us this year, Amy. Thanks for signing up.

  3. I’m so freaking excited Carl 😀 I can’t tell you how badly I need this challenge right now…in fact as soon as I finish this comment, I’m going to collect all of my books off of my shelves and put them in a pile 🙂 Thanks again for hosting this for the SIXTH time 😀 And thanks again for introducing me to yet another amazing artist!

    1. You are very welcome Chris. I know I say this at every challenge, but I am so touched that you have been such a faithful friend and participant in these things. Your enthusiasm always gets me going. Can’t wait to see what you read.

      1. Aw, thanks Carl 🙂 I wouldn’t have it any other way! Your “challenges” are some of my favorite parts of blogging and the friendships I’ve made through them, you included, is something that I’ll cherish for all of my life!!

        1. Me too. It is pretty amazing that what started out as a focus on books has turned into a focus on friends old and new.

  4. I’ll link up my post when it goes live on Sept. 1. I’m starting my first read tonight though — The Mysteries of Udolpho by Anne Radcliffe. Always wanted to read this one!

    1. That one is on my list of books to eventually get to, Kristen. Look forward to reading about your experience with it when you are done.

    1. You are correct. I even mentioned in there that everyone should consider “breaking the rules” and starting now, so go for it! I’ll check out your post, and thank you so much for joining in.

  5. I’m in, I don’t have a blog but I will link to my reviews on forums or bookcrossing journal entries when I finish a book.
I’m joining in with the Fragile Things read-a-long, will definitely read many short stories as I love this theme for a short story.
I will aim to read 4 novels as well although I may succeed in reading more. At the moment my books are between two houses so I can’t scour the shelves for suitable titles like I normally would, but here are a few I can recall off of the top of my head which I would like to read:
    Jane Eyre (reread)
    The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
    The Small Hand Susan Hill
    The first Sookie Stackhouse novel
Forever and Taken by Lauren Kate

As for short stories I will be looking for classics and I’ll probably pick up some graphic novels, but that’ll depend on the new library.
Autumn has started in England, we have had the heating on the last few days! No pretty brown leaves yet though 🙁

    1. Best wishes with your move, Katrina. Thanks for joining in. Please feel free to post your thoughts about each of the short stories in the comments sections of my Monday Fragile Things posts when they go up.

Your potential reads look great. I’m hoping to hit the classics for some short stories too, including some Poe and some Lovecraft.

And I’m jealous of your weather. These next two days are going to go back up into the heat advisory range here. Yuck!

  6. Yah! I’m so excited! My post is up but will undoubtedly change buckets after looking through everyone else’s lists (which is really part of the fun.)

Great artwork this year, by the way, I really had a hard time choosing between the two excellent compositions!

    1. Isn’t it though? I am so glad Melissa was generous enough to let me use it.

  7. I broke the rules… by starting yesterday! Couldn’t resist but that’s a compliment, right? LOL. Thrilled that another RIP is with us and thanks for hosting again, Carl.

    1. I love rule breakers Cath, so good for you!!! I did actually read the first couple chapters of my one of the books that will be in my pool a few weeks ago but then decided to a “be good” and stopped.

    1. You are very welcome. I look forward to seeing what happens with your event. Please let me know when you need me to post.

  8. This was the best thing ever to wake up to!!!!! And I adore the buttons – once again you found an artist whose work I’m going to have to check out. I already bought a slew of Jennifer Gordon’s work two years ago and it still hangs all over my living room. 😀

    1. I have a bunch of Jennifer’s work too. Which I am now glad of because she seems to have disappeared. Her Etsy site is down and I cannot get her to respond to any of my emails, which is sad because we had grown (I thought) into friends, and exchanged emails regularly. I still see her FB updates about her dancing so I know she’s okay, she just seems to have unplugged.

I bought one of the Flight images from Melissa for myself already because she has an example of it framed on her site and it looks great. I think I’m going to frame it the same way. I look forward to getting it up somewhere in the house when I start my fall decorating this weekend.

  9. I’m in! Going for Peril the Second. I’ll get a post up on my blog on Sunday or early next week. Let autumn begin!

    1. Amen, let it begin!!! Great to have you on board Beth. Look forward to your post.

  10. Yay!!!! I’ve been stock piling books over the last month in anticipation. I picked up The Woman in Black just yesterday. I can’t wait to start it!

    1. Chris, you are the second person to mention to me that they are going to read this book. It looks like it would be a great book, dripping with atmosphere and gothic goodness. I may need to get in on that.

    1. Thank you, I’m so happy Melissa allowed the use of the images and can’t wait to read her answers to my interview questions.

    1. Thanks for joining us Margaret. I’ll check out your post soon. Doesn’t it feel great to be starting this? I have about 50 pages of my current read to finish and then I’ll be picking up my first RIP read. Well, I guess I actually started listening to the Fragile Things audio yesterday, so that counts.

  11. It delights me that I’m number 13 on the Why, Yes, I’ll Be Participating list. It’s my favorite number, you know, and I’m going to take it as a good omen that this ever wonderful challenge will smash my reading slump (as mentioned in my Fingers on the Starting Line post) to crushed glass like bits. Thanks for once again donning the robes of host, Carl!

    1. Um, okay, well I was 13 for at least a moment. Bad omen? A sign that I am, in the spirit of this challenge, losing my mind? Seeing things? Only time will tell.

      1. Ooo…spooky! 🙂 I would consider both a good omen, after all this is all about celebrating those scary things. So embrace 13 and 13’s rejection. LOL!

Happy to put on the robe again.

  12. well I cheated more than most and started a 600 pg book a few days ago but read real slow so I have only read 200 pgs!..
so glad RIP has begun!! I already have added 3 books to my wish list just from others lists!! argh! I wish they weren’t all “new” books lol.. I could use a financial break here folks! lol..
My post is up and I’m leaving the computer soon to read another chapter in my book.. i think I am almost hoping that my pile isn’t all that good to read as I have kept the 13th tale and drood for rereads in case i need them lol

may you have some dark and dreary nights for some good reading!!

    1. It just seems somehow in keeping with the spirit of this challenge to cheat a bit, doesn’t it?

Have you added The Night Circus to your list yet? It doesn’t come out for a few weeks but I think I may have to grab it right away and read it when it comes out. Am loving what I am hearing about it.

      1. I’ve heard good things about “The Night Circus,” so I’m kind of curious about it as well.

        1. Beth shared this video on Twitter this morning of Jim Dale (who is such an excellent audio book reader) recording a small portion of The Night Circus. That alone has me interested.

  13. This will be my first time participating in this challenge and I cannot even tell you how excited I am! I just completed a move from Florida to Virginia Beach and that means that the weather should cooperate effectively with the cooler months.I’ve missed the earthquake and the hurricane, so I’m ready for some good ole Gothic creepiness to fill my reading hours!

And might I just add that these graphics are fantastic – as always!

    1. Oh yes, Natalie, you should have some deliciously appropriate weather for this when all is said and done. I hope the move went well and that you are settling in. Thanks so much for joining in with us this year. I hope you find some wonderful books to read for the event.

    1. You are welcome, thank you for joining in and making it such a pleasure to be the host.

  14. I’ve been waiting for this all year!! And since you gave us permission to break the rules….yes, I think I will start today.
    🙂

    1. Me too, most especially as summer recently gave us a bit of a temperature break which fired up my desire for autumn to come in.

  15. oh yes, those Weeping Angels set the tone, and the birds. You are so good at finding the right Artists for the job. I have been looking forward to this: the reads, the community, a great host…now to find that list I’d been making! and get started.

    1. I’m so glad you are participating L. It sounded like your most recent read is a perfect R.I.P. book!

When I saw that she had done some angel images I just couldn’t resist. That is the Doctor Who fan in me creeping out.

  16. Sounds fun! I’ve signed up for Peril the First — I have lots of books on the TBR shelf that would qualify (enough to discuss on a full blog post). Off the top of my head, I’ll probably read the following:

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
Lady Audely’s Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon
The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
The Haunted Bookshop by Christopher Morley

and maybe some Daphne du Maurier and some Sarah Waters. Looking forward to it!

    1. Wonderful Karen! Thanks for joining in! I’ve read the Jackson and thought it was great. The others are all books I want to read at some point. I’m interesting in reading Waters’ Little Stranger and someday I am going to re-read Rebecca. It has been far too long since I have done so.

  17. I am always happy to see the announcement of this challenge. I can’t believe it has been 6 years! There have been a few posts circulating around concerning the end of Weekly Geeks and how blogging has changed so much since it started. This challenge is another good example. When you hosted for the first time challenges were still a new thing. Nowadays you can find them everywhere, but yet you have managed to continue through all of the changes. Here’s to many more great challenges and lots of great reading for this one. I am looking forward to our group reads!

    1. Yes, this thing has been around for a good long time. It was one of the early ones when folks were really liking the idea of “challenging” one another and has progressed to the point where I hate even including the word “challenge” because it now has a negative vibe and I was never into the “challenge” part of it anyway. It was always about what it is about today: reading good books and getting together to celebrate them. I hope the interest in this one continues as I would love to keep hosting it. The internet has changed and I know many who either no longer blog at all or they do so in some other format. At the moment I haven’t found any comparable site/program that does for me what blogging does, so I’ll be the dinosaur for now and keep pressing on.

      1. I hope the interest remains, too. I have to admit sometimes I consider just packing it all in and leaving the blogging world, but something always winds up keeping me here.

        1. I do too every once in awhile but I can’t imagine doing so. Our buddy reads and now these group reads are things that by themselves make me want to keep an online presence. Plus anytime I feel I’ve run out of things to write about I get some inspiration and I am off.

          1. I feel exactly the same way. Something always happens to draw me back in. 🙂 I am looking forward to our group reads.

            1. Me too. Sometimes I think we are crazy trying to tackle all these, but I think spreading the short story book out over the two months actually will give us plenty of time for our other group reads plus whatever else we want to sneak in.

              1. Yeah, I am all ready going over the schedules in my head trying to remember when I have to read all this stuff… I always want to reread Lord of the Rings, but I am not sure if that doable at this time. I need more hours in the day. I feel like no matter how much I read, I never get everything even close to accomplished…

  18. It has begun. An unstoppable challenge that steamrolls all others. Thanks for hosting this yet again. I’ve signed up and posted my “pool” on my blog. Can’t wait to see what all I’ll be adding to my TBR.

    Rememorandom

    1. Yes, I’m glad it keeps going on and has taken on a life of its own. I got lots of smiles over the last few weeks when I would stumble across mentions of R.I.P. that weren’t generated because I had brought up the topic. I’m glad people enjoy this type of literature so much and am thrilled we can all come together to have fun.

  19. I wasn’t sure I was going to take part in this challenge (this will be my first time) until I came across Peril of the Short Stories. My fall reading does not consist of anything dark and/or dire, but I could add stuff of this kind into my short story time. I host a meme on wednesday called Short Stories on Wednesdays, to encourage folk like myself to read at least one short story a week. Perhaps I could aim to read at least 8 for this challenge.:D

    1. Autumn and creepy reading just wouldn’t be the same without short stories, Risa. I’m glad you are deciding to participate. If you do read and discuss any challenge related short stories please post links to your Short Stories on Wednesdays posts on the Book Review Site (link in my side bar). I and others would love to come over and see what you are reading.

And might I suggest Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber as one of the books you look into for short stories. If you haven’t read her she is excellent and while these are reworkings of fairy stories they are suitably moody and perfect for reading in the fall.

  20. Yeah! Thanks for hosting my favorite reading event, Carl. I will have a post up sometime this evening.

    1. Thank you for joining in, Gavin. I’m glad it is your favorite, it is such a great deal of fun for me to host.

  21. As usual, I’ve “signed up” but have no idea what or how much I’ll read. Since SF-F and Mystery are the two primary genres I read, and since I have plenty on hand in what amounts to to-be-read walls of books, it won’t be finding something, it will be finding time and deciding which books. I do expect to include a graphic novel or two, which, if I recall, is allowed in the guideline.

With the NWS saying this coming weekend will be our hottest of the year, it certainly doesn’t feel like Fall!

    1. eee! SO EXCITED! This is one of my favourite times of the fall.

cannot wait to rustle some book ideas together (I knew this was coming so I gave it a mental head start over august)

      this is GREAT

      yay!

    2. Richard: Oh yes, graphic novels are always welcome. I generally re-read some Hellboy during this time and my list that I am putting together includes Delphine by Richard Sala.

Yes, it is supposed to be 100 degrees here tomorrow. When I pull up the NWS map today, tomorrow and Friday all have those lovely (he says sarcastically) burning hot suns for the image. Yuck. It is supposed to drop some this weekend. I hope that is the case.

I have no doubt you’ll come up with some interesting mysteries to read for this challenge. Look forward to seeing what they will be.

Rachel: Thank you so much for joining in, I’m glad you are excited and I am too!

  22. I picked up a couple of books for last year then never did the challenge. The challenge now is to find them for this year! I don’t remember it being September too but am glad it is.

    Thanks for hosting

    1. LOL, I know that feeling. I hope you find them and thank you for joining in.

  23. I have been driving people at work talking about this. I am so excited, that I started looking for books in July.

    1. Cool! thanks Nulaanne! I’m excited that it is finally here. I’ve been wanting it to be R.I.P. time for about a month now. Thanks for joining in, and keep driving people crazy! 🙂

  24. Thanks for hosting this challenge! I usually post in my website in Catalan, but I will try to provide English translations for RIP Challenge.

It’s the first time that I can manage to participate in it (though every year I wanted… maybe it’s for the Dr. Who allusion that I can’t avoid it this year!), and I think that I will attempt with Peril the First.

You also can follow my progress at Goodreads: http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/4514966-shanidar

    1. I am glad the Doctor Who reference pulled you in! 🙂
Thank you for joining in this year, I am glad it worked out for you.

  25. Yaiii…it started again. Will write my introduction post soon.
I had great time last year, hope I will had another great time this year 🙂

    1. Thanks for joining in again this year Novroz! Look forward to your post.

  26. Yay! It’s time for R.I.P.! I will be partaking in Peril the First, Peril on the Screen & the Short Story Peril’s please. Will go home and peruse the piles and post a list as soon as they get my internet fixed at home.
Thanks Carl for doing this again, it’s always a hi-lite of the fall that I anticipate year-round.

    1. I hate it when the internet at home is down. So frustrating!!! Especially considering how much it costs. Thanks for joining in again. Now if you can just resist sending me t-shirt ads. LOL!

I am loving my Kessel Run t-shirt, by the way.

  27. I am so there! I’m signing up for Peril the First and Peril of the Screen! For sure. I may sign up for a group read but I’m kind of bad at those (busy life and all that). Thank you again, Carl, for hosting this super-fun challenge. We all look forward to it all year.

    1. I understand, but if you can join us we would love to have you. At any rate I’m thrilled you are joining in the bigger challenge and can’t wait to see what you read and watch.

    1. Geranium cat: I was on your site and wrote a reply and had to choose “google account” and it says I am not allowed on the site so i don’t know what thats all about but I couldn’t leave a comment

      1. Hmmmm…I just left one and it seemed to take it (pending approval). You should try again just in case it was one of those weird random glitches that blogs seem to have.

        1. nope.. tried again… there are about 4 of them from the links above.. I get to see the page and write a comment and when I click to post it , it says: Your current account (deslily@aol.com) does not have access to view this page.

          1. ok i know why it is…it’s because it’s blogspot and the comments are not done on a pop up comment box.. I have blogspot also but on other blogspot blogs it seems it won’t let me leave a comment if it’s not a pop up box…sorry Geranium and about 3 others that I forget who they are now..

    2. Geranium Cat: You would probably have more manageable TBR piles! LOL! But thank you dearly, and I’m off to check out your post.

  28. Here it has been autumn for two months already (we had our summer in spring this year), so I can’t wait to start the challenge! 🙂

  29. I’m signing up for Peril the First. I loved this challenge last year – thanks for hosting it again!

  30. I’ve never participated before and I’m thrilled to be joining the fun this year. I can’t wait to dive into the creepiness.

    1. Welcome Melissa, it is wonderful to have you joining in with us this year. I hope you have a great time with it.

  31. Count me in for Peril of the First, Short Story, Screen and Group Read.

Books in my pool include but not limited to:

    Storm Front by Jim Butcher
    Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman
Armerican Gods – 10th Anniversary Edition version ( so this is sort of a reread of many words but a new read of thousands of added words. )
    Naked Heat by Richard Castle
Hellboy: The Fury mini-series by Mike Mignola
latest Criminal comices by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips

    For the screen:
    Dr Who – Season 4
    maybe Apollo 18
Solomn Kane on DVD if I can find it.

    1. Good call on the Hellboy, Jeff, I need to read that too. And I hope we can watch Solomon Kane together, that would be fun. Need to see if we can get it in the Redbox.

Look forward to our group reads.

    2. Glad to see you are doing the Fragile Things group read, Jeff.

I am kind of curious about the Richard Castle books. That’s what the show is based on right? I have only seen an episode here and there.

      1. Because I can’t resist butting in, the Castle books are actually not what the show is based on. It is actually a really clever idea. The Richard Castle character is a writer who is following around the female police officer to get ideas for his new series of books. Each of the two Richard Castle mystery novels that are out now are actually supposed to be the books that the Richard Castle character has researched and written on the show. It is a neat tie-in idea.

        1. Oooohhh… That actually makes a lot of sense. See, now I am really curious because every time I read a book or watch something where a writer is writing something, I always want to read whatever they are working on. Actually being able to do so is kinda cool!

          1. I’m glad they did it. It could be seen as gimmicky, but I know both Jeff and my wife have actually enjoyed the books and I think the idea is great.

  32. Best day ever!!!! I’m super excited and cannot wait to begin. Except I already have 🙂 Thanks for hosting this once again!

    1. Awww, I’m so thrilled with your excitement, and am glad to hear that you jumped the gun and already started.

  33. I’m so excited to participate in this challenge again! Last year was my first time and it turned out to be my favorite challenge yet. I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone else chooses to read.

    1. Super to have you back for another round. I am glad you enjoyed it last year and hope this year is even more fun for you.

    1. I’m jealous you can do so. I just decided today that I want to read this and now I have to wait until it comes out!

  34. I was too late for last year’s RIP challenge so I’ve been saving some of my creepier titles for this year’s event. I can’t believe it’s autumn already!? Looking forward to getting started 🙂

    1. I can’t believe it either. Time does fly. Glad you made it in for the beginning this year and hope your saved books turn out to be deliciously creepy fun.

    1. You are very welcome, Melody. I’m glad you are joining again.

  35. YAY!!! I actually cheered out loud when I saw this post. Hope my neighbors don’t think I’m crazier than they already do 🙂

MY A/C is currently running, but fall is coming, I can feel it! Thanks for hosting this again, Carl!

    1. Ah, who cares what the neighbors think. Go grab ’em and bring ’em along! 🙂

We’ve had a roaring return of summer that I hope only lasts a brief period of time.

  36. Very exciting! Can’t wait to get new horror recommendations!

I will be taking part in Peril the First with a book pool of:
The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle- both by Shirley Jackson
Rage, Just After Sunset, and Under the Dome- by Stephen King/Richard Bachman
The Exorcist bt William Peter Blatty
At the Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft (this probably satisfies Peril of the Short Story though)

Also, Peril of the Screen with The Walking Dead and the premiere of the series The River. Also, Stephen King will be having a special on TCM in October where he discusses his all-time favorite horror movies. Plus, my annual viewings of various movies of the horror genre!

    It’s gonna be fun!

    1. I haven’t heard of The River. I’ll have to check that out.

I read both Jackson books you mention a year or two ago and enjoyed them both very much. I need to read some of her short stories.

Lovecraft is always great to read when autumn rolls in.

      Thanks for joining in!

  37. I’m joining for the first time this year, and I’m really excited. This sounds like a great way to meet other bloggers and get awesome book recommendations. Thanks for hosting this event, Carl. 🙂

    1. Welcome, Darlyn. It is terrific to have you joining in, I’m glad you discovered it and decided to join us in the fun. It really and truly is a fantastic way to meet new friends with similar interests. The community of this challenge is what makes it all worth while.

  38. Woohoo! I forgot this was coming up, so I have no idea what peril I’ll do or what I’ll read, but I’m excited! I don’t have a book-related blog any more, but there’s got to be a way to link to reviews on Goodreads…I’ll figure something out.

    1. I think you can link Goodreads reviews. I’m so glad you got the word and decided to join in again this year. Look forward to seeing what you decide to read.

  39. I’m in for Peril the First, and will read Northanger Abbey (love Austen, but haven’t gotten around to that one, yet), Dorian Gray, Wuthering Heights, I Am Legend and The Graveyard Book.

    1. I read Northanger Abbey many years ago and remember enjoying it. Austen is great. Really enjoyed I AM Legend as well, and The Graveyard Book is one of my favorites. Thanks for joining in! 🙂

  40. YES!YES!YES I?m in. I’ll leave my link when I get time to do the introduction post. Friday, I guess.
    I’m excited and looking forward.

    1. So, you’re in?!?! You shouldn’t be so crytic. LOL.

I’m so glad you are excited and hope you have a wonderful time.

  41. I just signed up. I couldn’t pare my list down below 20 books. LOL I love this challenge, you know I do, Carl!!! I left another half dozen off my list, too!!! I think i broke the rules since i read two horror books last week – Under the Dome by Stephen King, and The Strain by Guillermo Del Toro. What do you think, do they count for the challenge too?

Thanks so much for doing this, Carl. I’ve found so many good horror and ghost stories through this challenge. And made many good friends, including you. 😀

I also love the banner this year. Dr Who angels!! Could it get any better????

    1. Wow, that is a big list! And I’m glad you love it, I do as well. Wasn’t hard to come up with the original idea as this is the type of stuff I always love to read when the autumn winds start blowing in.

The King and del Toro definitely count. I read The Strain when it came out and liked it. Need to get to the other books in the trilogy sometime.

  42. YAY! RIP is here!! Can’t wait to start reading some spooky tomes! I’m in for Peril the Second, but want to finish at Peril the First, so we’ll see. I already have two books lined up: A Discovery of Witches and The Reapers are the Angels. I’m thinking of adding two classics to the pile, not sure which ones yet. All I know is that I love this challenge, because it means fall is right around the corner!!

    1. Me too, I’m ready for some mystery, suspense and spookiness. Even though it is supposed to get up to 100 degrees today, I can sense autumn. It is looking at us and coming this way. I’m ready for it to depose summer as soon as possible.

  43. Hi Carl. Yippie for fall. Can you also send some cooler weather? I’m in for the challenge. I’m not sure what level yet since I need to figure out how long it will take me to get settled. And I have a slight problem since all my books are on a boat heading to London. But I have been looking into libraries that are near my new apartment. So what books I’ll read will be tbd. I am reading The Mysteries of Udolpho so I will be able to contribute at least one book. And I’m hoping to join the Butcher group read. I haven’t read any of his works so it will be a fun introduction to a new author. And once again, yippie for fall. Can you tell I’m not a summer person?

    1. Although the R.I.P. Challenge is ever-growing in its appeal, I have yet to figure out a way to use all that energy to force fall to come early and banish summer to the hell from whence it came (I’m not a summer person either). I’ll keep trying though.

Glad you are going to try to stay involved with this as much as possible during your move. Its gonna be hard not seeing you online as much while you are in between spaces. I’m getting used to almost daily contact!

Hope you can join in on the Butcher read.

      1. I used to love summer. I mean, I grew up in Southern California so I should be used to heat. But as I get older, I hate heat. Another joy of getting older.

I know! It will be weird to be disconnected during this move. And I don’t know how long it will be. But it is all for a good cause. I’m pretty excited these days.

I’ll do my best to grab a copy of Butcher on my way out of town.

        1. I thought summer was great when I was a kid and was in school and summer meant freedom. It meant wandering around the countryside with friends, damning up creeks so that we could swim in them, catching tadpoles, reading books, going out for ice cream at night with my parents.

Now summer is heat. Mowing in the heat. Fighting weeds and voluntary trees in the heat. Paying high electric bills because of the heat. Not enjoying the outdoors because of heat. And that isn’t even mentioning the accompanying humidity.

Summer has no charm for me other than fresh fruits and veggies. And that ain’t enough.

  44. side note: had to tell you this.. i just came home from food shopping (big whoop).. when i stopped for a red light I happened to notice the license tag on the car in front of me..
RIP 299…yeah really! RIP! Must be an omen huh???!!!

    1. Definitely an omen. It is a good thing you chose to participate, or there might have been trouble!!!

  45. Hi, thanks for running the challenge every year.

We don’t have fall or winter. We have Summer all year round. But it’s still fun to take part in the Challenge…

    1. I am glad you will be celebrating Autumn with us in spirit, Violet. Where are you from?

        1. Thanks. I am so ignorant of climates outside of the United States. I’m thrilled to have you participating with us.

  46. Joining you from over at Kelly’s Thoughts And Ramblings. Sounds like a great challenge and one I’m certainly considering doing.

    1. I’m glad you found out about the challenge and appreciate you joining in. We always strive to have fun and I hope you do as well.

  47. I’m looking forward to this year’s challenge! And I’ve created my own challenge category to reflect another of my passions: The Challenge of the Needle. It looks like a great fall!

  48. Okay, they’re telling me the internet is now fixed at my house…we’ll see when I get home, but, I can say that my first read for the Peril the First will be “The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein” by Peter Ackroyd cause it’s sitting on my desk right now!

    1. I’ll cross my fingers for you. I don’t trust “them”. Hope your first read is great!

      1. I guess if you consider it bouncing up and down like a super-ball fixed?! Hopefully it’ll stay up more than down this weekend, but, i forsee them getting another call complaining Tuesday… @_@ looking like i’m going to be Frankenstein/Dracula heavy this R.I.P. 😀

        1. That sounds like a good problem to have. The Frankenstein/Dracula heaviness, that is.

  49. I’ve just signed up for the very first time! I’ve chosen four books, 3 mysteries and 1 on the supernatural side (at least I think so from the descriptions I’ve read of it).

    1. Well welcome to your first R.I.P. Challenge, Nan. I hope you enjoy it, this is a great community of readers. Thank you so much for participating.

  50. I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep up with the group reads since I started school again, but I’m definitely going to read Storm Front and Fragile Things before the challenge is over.

    Thanks so much for this!

    1. I wish you all the best with school this year, Skye. I hope you can do the group reads as it would be great to have your input on the stories, but completely understand if school demands stop you from doing so.

  51. Hi, I’m in for my first-ever RIP! Thank you for hosting, I think this is the first time in months I’ve been really excited about upcoming reading.

    1. I’m so glad to hear that Amanda and thank you so much for joining in, it is so wonderful to have you with us. I hope you have a terrific time with the books you chose to read.

  52. I’ve been so looking forward to this Carl! Thanks for once again hosting what has definitely become a blogosphere event! And that badge with the stone angel totally made me think Dr. Who.

    1. You are more than welcome. I have a blast doing it.

And I was the same way, as soon as I saw the angels I got the Doctor Who vibe.

    1. I would say a show like Supernatural most certainly qualifies in my opinion. My wife loves that show.

        1. oh good! cause i’ve got Supernatural the Animated Series setting by the TV to watch!

  53. This will be my first ever challenge 😀 Since classics are my thing, I’ll be reading The Mysteries of Udolpho and revisiting Northanger Abbey to compare the two. I also have The Turn of the Screw on my shelf waiting to be read

    1. That is one of the nice things about this event, there are plenty of great classics out there with a good gothic feel. That is the kind of book that inspired this in the first place.

Thanks so much for joining in.

  54. I, too, blinked and it was the sixth time around for the RIP. I so well remember joining in for your first, Carl, as you were the one to bring the joy of reading challenges to me for the first time.

I love how you’re adding group reads! They are so wonderful to share! It will be fun to talk about The Lantern which I just read. Should you wish a copy for a give-away, I’d be glad to send you mine which is like new.

Highly, highly, highly recommend the novel Strangers by Taichi Yamada. It’s got to be one of the best ghost “stories” I’ve read in many years…since the first RIP? Blessings, and I’m so glad to partake again in this feast.

    1. I may take you up on that, only hold on to it as if we do such a thing it would be nice for you to just send it directly to the winner!

I’m psyched that you’ve read it and can join us in the conversation about it.

Strangers sounds great and I will check it out.

I love it that you’ve been with this from the start. I consider you all founding members. Your passion that first time, on my first ever hosted challenge, set the stage for everything that followed. Thank you so much for always being there, I appreciate you so much.

      1. Back at you, Carl.

I’m going to send you both The Lantern and Strangers and you can do with them what you will. I hope you like the later as much as I did, and we can talk about the former when it’s time.

  55. I am so happy to be joining in. I found so many great books and even movies from this event in the past few years. I just posted my review for The Lantern and hope to add other reviews in the coming weeks.

    1. I hope you’ll come discuss The Lantern with us in October as we do our group read of it. We are very happy to have you joining us in the challenge and thank you so much for doing so. Hope you have a wonderful time.

  56. All signed up for Peril the First! I have an interesting mix on my tbr pile to pick from. It’ll be interesting to see where my whims lead me….

    1. Ah whims, I do love those! I hope they take you down some interesting and spooky roads during the challenge. Thanks so much for joining in and please, have fun!

    1. I’m glad you made it on time this year, Bev. Thanks for coming back and joining in. 🙂

  57. I joined in for the first time last year and am looking forward to it again. {As a matter of fact, I may re-read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.}

    1. It has been so many ages since I’ve read that, I really need to do so again. Thank you so much for coming back and joining in again.

  58. Yay! I’ll have a pool post up shortly….Lovely pics as always…BTW, just watched the Weeping Angels Dr. Who eps (with the new Dr and Amelia Pond) and that made the pictures extra creepy/appropriate! Happy Fall!

    1. Look forward to your pool. And thanks, I’m so happy that Melissa Nucera allowed me to use them for our challenge. And yes, those are creepy episodes as well. I love Amy Pond.

  59. My very firt Peril! I want to go all out, naturally, so I’m in this year for Carl’s RIP VI challenge. I just read “Dead Bad Thing” which was a really scary, horror thriller. Rats! I could have added that to my list! Anyway, I’m off to find the first of my books…
    Thanks, Carl!

    Deborah/TheBookishDame

    1. Ah, welcome Deborah. I am honored that you would choose R.I.P. to be your first challenge. I say you add Dead Bad Thing to your list anyway, it was close enough to the time. 🙂 Hope you find some deliciously creepy books to read. Enjoy the challenge.

  60. I’m so glas I found this challenge. I might actually read some books I’ve been meaning to read for a while now.

    1. That is great, Kim. Exactly what an event like this should do. Thank you for signing up and I hope you get to those books and love them.

  61. Definitely participating again this year! I love this challenge! No ideas yet as to WHAT I’ll read, but I’m aiming for Peril the First, and possibly the group read for The Lantern.

    1. I hope you can join us for The Lantern group read. Let me know if you decide to so that I can put you on the email list for questions.

Thanks for joining us again this year. Hope you have even more fun this time around.

  62. This sounds amazing! I love all of these genres and I absolutely love Halloween and Autumn. I’m looking forward to this.

    1. Autumn and Halloween are the best! Thanks for joining in, I’m glad you found us and hope you have an eerily fantastic time.

    1. Hooray for good memory! I’m glad you were able to get in at the beginning this year. Thank you so much for coming along for the fun.

  63. It’s autumn! RIP!!! WOOHOO! I read my first one today 🙂 SK’s newest short story 🙂

    1. Great Janet! So happy you are not only joining in but that you dove in and got some reading done. I haven’t read any King short stories forever and I really should.

  64. Great challenge! I’m going for Peril the First and hopefully lowering my to-be-read-pile.

    1. Thanks Mervi. If you actually lower your to be read pile, instead of making it miles bigger, with this challenge then my hat is off to you! LOL! Glad you are getting perilous with us.

  65. This is right up my alley. An excellent way for me to increase the dearth of supernatural reviews on my blog. I had a slew of them back in the spring, but then returnerd to my passion for crime and detective novels. I’ll be posting reviews on a lot of vintage ghost story books and writers who started it all back in the Edwardian era and into the 1920s and 1930s. Looking forward to this!

I’ll be doing a combination of “Peril the 1st” and “Peril on the Screen” since I am an avowed horror and thriller movie addict.

    1. It sounds like it, JF. And all the books it sounds like you’ve been reading, the supernatural and the crime and detective fiction all works. Sounds to me like I need to spend some time on your blog checking out what you’ve been reading.

Thanks for joining in with us. Look forward to seeing what you read and watch during the challenge.

  66. I’ve posted my list of books and hope to join in on reading The Lantern. I’ve already started my first book and am so looking forward to cooler weather though the last two days have been hot and sticky!

    1. I hope you can, it would be great to have you join in on The Lantern reading. I’ll come check out your list. 🙂

  67. Carl, I am sooooo excited about my very first RIP!!! Thank you for hosting such a wonderful event 😉

    1. I’m very happy that you decided to join in. I feel like we’ve both been too busy lately and I’ve missed “seeing” you. Look forward to your thoughts on all things R.I.P. related.

  68. Pingback: Let Her RIP! |
  69. Hooray, it’s time for RIP VI! I’ve been looking forward to this since…oh, about November 3rd last year. (I think that’s when I finally posted my RIP V recap.) Thanks for hosting this great challenge again, Carl!

    1. Ha, Kaizerin. I’m glad to hear it. It always goes by way to fast for me, but maybe that is why I stay so hungry for it year after year. Thanks for joining in again this year.

  70. Yay! Love this every year and this year it’s especially fitting, as I just launched my new horror blog! My sign up post is on the new blog and I also cross posted it on my reading challenge blog. Thanks for continuing this great tradition. 🙂

    1. Oh, that is perfect, Michelle. I’ll be over to check it out. Thank you and everyone else for making this a tradition. I enjoy everyone’s participation so much (despite what it does to my pocketbook, lol!)

  71. I am all about Gothic this year! I have 4 books I am interested in–but will probably realistically finish 2 of them. Thanks for such a fun event Carl!
    My choices are:
    1. The Sister
    2. The Haunting of Hill House
    3. 666 Park Avenue
    4. The Girl Who Would Speak For the Dead

    1. I read Haunting of Hill House last year for the RIP Challenge (or maybe the year before), it is now one of my favorite books. I also recently read We Have Always Lived in the Castle by the same author, which I can recommend as a fitting option for RIP. Its pretty short, but quite good and really creepy. Jackson is a master and making the mundane totally terrifying!

      1. You’ve got that right Chay, she really is. Both are books I would like to re-read at some point.

    2. I enjoyed The Haunting of Hill House when I read it last year. Shirley Jackson was such a great author of gothic, moody stories.

Thanks for being a part of RIP IV, Kim. 🙂

  72. I’m in again. My favorite challenge every year, and the first challenge I ever participated in. Thanks again, Carl!

    1. Great to have you back, Dana. Hope this year for you is better than ever.

    1. So glad you are doing so Emily. The folks who gather to do this have so much fun that it is well worth being a part of. Plus you will meet some amazing people. Thanks for taking the plunge this year.

    1. I thought your selection was great. Hope you enjoy them, and thanks for coming along again this year.

  73. Hurray!!! I took a blogging break in August, but with September comes all good things including R.I.P. my most favorite challenge ever. I’m back to blog, read, and imbibe perilously. 🙂

    1. That is great, Sarah. Recharged and ready for R.I.P.! Love it. I look forward to seeing what you perilously imbibe. Enjoy your September and October!

  74. Despite being ridiculously behind on everything, including blog reading, I hope you know that there’s no way I’d pass up on any of your incredible challenges! In fact, I’m sure you already know that the whole family is in…we just have get our acts together enough to post about it.

Happy Fall, dear friend!!! And here’s hoping that the air starts feeling like fall for you soon!

    1. Yay! I was so happy to stumble upon this comment and found out that you were joining in, Debi!!

    2. I am so happy Debi. I know you are so busy with school and everything but it makes me giddy to know you are going to join in. I couldn’t imagine it without you. It started feeling like autumn here yesterday and you have been on my mind. Hope you and the family have a deliciously creepy autumn.

  75. I signed up! Thanks for this fun event. I plan on doing Peril the First and so far plan to read Blood Rights and Blood and Other Cravings. I’ll figure the other two out later.

    Thanks 🙂

    1. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this challenge! I’m adding Peril the Screen this year in addition to my beloved Peril the First!

      1. I’m so glad I thought about Peril on the Screen last year. So many of us were watching creepy stuff every year, makes sense that we decided to go ahead and add it to the challenge. Thanks for joining us Michelle.

  76. I was complaining that September came waay too fast & that Halloween candy was out too early, but now I’m excited for Fall and Halloween – all b/c of RIP VI!! Think I’m going to play it safe this year & go for Peril the Second. I’ll also probably do Peril on the Screen.

    1. It is a bit early for Halloween candy (although that does tell you something about how “good” for you that candy is, it last so long!).

I’m happy you are getting perilous with us Chay. Hope you enjoy both of your perils.

  77. How thrilling! I’m in an Austen book club this school year and will encourage Northanger Abbey being the 1st read. I will try to do 4! Can’t wait to get started:)

    1. Northanger Abbey is so perfect for this challenge. It embodies that moody gothic atmosphere so well. Great to have you joining the challenge, Tina.

  78. This is my 2nd year joining, totally my bloody cup of tea ;-). Dracula is a must, trying for the scary reads. I am in the midst of Thrill Week, come visit, ends on Thurs.

Thanks for hosting, amazing blogosphere participation. Well Done

    1. Mint too, Marce. Thanks for coming back again this year to take part. Dracula is indeed a must. I need to get over to thrill week. I’ve been so swamped trying to get ahead on my own reading and visiting all the participant’s blogs.

  79. you have more comments and pingbacks on this post than I get on my blog in months. I’m obviously doing something wrong.

    1. I don’t think it is that, Richard, so much as just people having a passion for this kind of reading, especially at this time of year. One of the things that makes me so happy about this is that it is not about me, it is about all the participants enjoying themselves and getting to interact with each other. I’m so pleased to be a conduit for that.

  80. It’s the 4th of September, but since I’m already halfway through a murder mystery, I don’t see this as a problem if you don’t. I’ve SEEN this challenge many times, but never remember to sign up. So, this year, I am.

    1. Absolutely not, that is perfect! I’m glad you were able to get in on the beginning of this challenge. Thanks for joining in. 🙂

  81. I’m currently – and conveniently – reading a zombie novel but this challenge gives me an excuse to devour my Shaun Hutson novels. I’m in!

    1. That works out great, Pete. Thanks for joining. I hope you enjoy the Hutson books.

  82. I’m totally in this year! I’ve always missed out in the past and then get all jealous! This year there is no excuse! Thanks for hosting!!

    1. I’m so glad you didn’t miss out this year, Tif. Sincerely hope you find some wonderfully atmospheric stuff to read for the challenge.

    1. Fantastic, wonderful to have you on board for the first time. Hope you have a lot of fun, Richard.

    1. Welcome Risa, thanks for deciding to take part this year. Have fun and enjoy whatever you read. 🙂

    1. You will, and I’m glad you’ll be sharing it with us. Look forward to seeing what you find to read. Welcome!

  83. I would like to take part this year for the first time in the RIP VI Challenge. I will choose the 2nd Peril and will select from the following:

Cold Moon Over Babylon — Michael McDowell
    The Unblessed — P. Richards
Hauntings: Is There Anybody There? — Norah Lofts
The Hours Before Dawn — Celia Fremlin
A Scent of New-Mown Hay — John Blackburn

The last two would be rereads — they are two of my most favorite books of all time; however I will read the unfamiliar books first.

Thanks for offering this challenge. I am going to get started right now!

    1. You are very welcome, Charlotte. Thank you for participating. I have not heard of any of these books and thus am very curious about them. I hope you enjoy your reads new and old.

  84. I’m in. I have to sort through my stacks, but I should have a few books lined up for this challenge later today.

  85. Well, I didn’t do at all well with the Once Upon a Time Challenge, but the R.I.P. is one of my favorites every year and I don’t want to miss it. So I’ll be signing up just as soon as I can get a post up with my list of possible books. Thanks so much for hosting again!

    1. I love the Once Upon a Time Challenge but the last few years even I have done a poor job with it, and I’m the host! LOL. Even though I don’t care about the “challenge” part of R.I.P., here’s hoping we both get time to imbibe a number of great books.

  86. I’m in, Carl!! Thanks, once again, for hosting this spectacularly fun challenge. I’ve read my first RIP title already, and hope to get the review up soon. I’m looking forward to see what everyone else is reading – including you!

    1. It is truly my pleasure, Jessica. And already have one down eh? Wonderful. I am doing a lot of reading but not getting anything finished just because I’m trying to stay on course with all of these group reads rather than reading too far ahead. I did start a book today though that I hope to finish soon for R.I.P.

    1. I’m excited that you are doing so Annie. I’d love to know what you end up reading for it.

  87. Sign me up. I always enjoy your challenges.

I had signed up and planned to participate in the Brandon Sanderson read along but due to non-blog related events, I did not blog much during the past month. I am still deciding which perils I want to do.

    1. Great! I’m sorry you weren’t able to participate in the Way of Kings read with us, but I do hope you take the time to read the book. It really is good.

  88. I’m fairly new in the book blogging community and this is to be my very first challenge – so thanks for hosting, and looking forward to have a good time with this!

    1. Welcome both to the book blogging community and to your first R.I.P. challenge! 🙂 I am so happy that you are joining us and hope you have a wonderful time.

  89. Since I started blogging I’ve seen banners for this challenge and been jealous/curious — so thrilled to get to participate this year!

    1. I’m happy that your curiosity lead you here, Audra. Wonderful to have you taking part. It is a fun time and I hope you enjoy whatever you choose to read during the next two months.

    1. Welcome Alice! Thanks for joining in for your first time. I hope you have a ball with it. 🙂

  90. Thanks for hosting this challenge — it is so fun and low pressure that it is joy to participate.

    1. You are very welcome. I try to make it fun and easy and I’m glad you see it that way as well. Great to have you joining in.

    1. Great Jenn, I’ll check it out. And thank so much for taking part in the challenge!

    1. Wonderful to have you in for the first time. I checked out your post and it is great. Autumn and Halloween are terrific and since you like those you’ll fit right in with the rest of us! 🙂

  91. This is perfect. My general reading mood shifts this direction every fall any way. Now I have an excuse for it!

    1. Mine too, and even though I don’t take the “challenge” part seriously, I’ve found that participating with a group of readers who are reading the same kind of stuff inspires me to fit more reading time in during these months than I might otherwise do. And I love that. Thanks for joining in!

  92. Hello!

In the past week I’ve read a couple of books that could qualify (namely, Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Lev Grossman’s The Magicians).

I’m looking forward to this challenge. Let ‘er R.I.P.!

    Lori

    1. Those definitely qualify. The Magician’s qualifies simply because of its depressing feel. Ha!

Great to have you in this year.

  93. I’m a little late (#187), but I finally signed up for my own challenge. LOL!

  94. What a great challenge. This is my first reading challenge ever! I’ll post my list on my sidebar later in the week. I do plan on reading some Victorian ghost stories. Thanks.

    1. Great Melinda, wonderful to have you joining in! And how delicious are Victorian ghost stories? Just perfect!

  95. Am a voracious reader, but this is my first book challenge ever! Will post my picks on my blog – mystery is one of favorite genres.

    1. Terrific Amodini! Can’t wait to see what you plan on trying to read. I’m already wanting to read much more than I actually can do these two months. LOL!

  96. hurray! have posted my first review for Frankenstein by Nick Dear. Screenplay for the National Theatre production in London this February, directed by Danny Boyle. First thing i’ve ever read in it’s entirety, (not that impressive it’s only 96 pages long) on the Kindle app for IPod. Makes me long for an IPad!

    1. Awesome. Make sure you link your review to the Book Review Site, if you haven’t already. 🙂

  97. Thanks for hosting this very cool R.I.P. Challenge. I choose Peril The First. All of the books are on my TBR shelf so the picks are easy.
    1. The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer
    2. Prophecy of the Sisters by Michelle Zink
    3. Bad Girls Don’t Die by Katie Alender
    4. Whisper by Phoebe Kitanidis
    Good luck to all participates!

    1. Wonderful, you have stuff already at hand to just dive right in. Look forward to your reviews as I have not heard of any of these books. Thanks so much for joining in!

    1. Aww, thanks Sandy. It isn’t fall without the group of you either. Glad we are all together to do it again. 🙂

    1. Great to have you participating in the reading for R.I.P., Kim. Welcome and thanks. Don’t worry about the extra link, I’m just glad you have one in that works.

  98. Yay! This is a sign that autumn is surely here! I love the art. I am reminded of the weeping angels.

    1. Yes, the art is great, isn’t it. I’m looking forward to interviewing artist Melissa Nucera.

Autumn is indeed here in spirit, thank you so much for joining in.

    1. Great Julie. Thank you so much for joining in. I hope you clear some books and have a wonderful time. Although this challenge is notorious for adding books to the shelf rather than removing them. Ha!

  99. I’m so looking forward to this challenge. It’s my first time after 2 years of blogging. I’m in the middle of Florence & Giles and it’s riveting so far!

  100. This looks like fun. I’ll be posting something tomorrow on my blog about this challenge and signing up. You provided images for the RIP Challenge but just curious if I can also use the Peril the Third and Peril of the Short Story pics too in my blog post. I like pictures 🙂

  101. I hope I’m not to late to join in 🙂 I’m aiming for Perils the first but am not as fast a reader as I used to be so may drop down to the second 😉

  102. I’m jumping in! I’ve signed on for Peril the First, Peril of the Short Story, and Peril on the Screen. Here’s to a really good scare!

  103. I’m coming to the party a bit late and didn’t write and official “I’m participating” post, but I did just read and write a review for The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury. Perfect for R.I.P.!

    1. It is never too late Terri! I’ll check out your review. Did you post a link to it on the review site?

  104. I just shared the challenge at my writing website, and tomorrow I’ll add a post about it at my vampire blog, http://suburbanvampire.blogspot.com. I’m on my second book that would qualify for the challenge since September started. Victoria Schwab’s dark YA fairy tale, THE NEAR WITCH, was my first, and I’m now in the middle of Erin Morgenstern’s THE NIGHT CIRCUS. Thanks for running this!

  105. I know I am a bit late in joining the challenge but better late than never. R.I.P. is a great idea! I think I will only commit to peril the second since I am starting late, looking forward to discovering some great books. Off to post and add link, thank you.

  106. I just learned of this reading challenge. I very much enjoy this genre and am going to join for the month of Oct. Since I’m late, I will enter at the peril the second and try to get two books read. I hope to read on of these three: Storm Front, The Lantern or The Night Circus. I look forward to being able to add many good titles to my must read as I read all of your reviews.

  107. Starting late but looking forward to the mystery, suspense, thriller part of the challenge.

  108. Hi there! I’m just getting into book blogging and have been participating in a variety of events like this to get me going and used to publishing on a daily basis… I already have a few books in my Kindle queue that fit the bill here, that I’m excited to get reading!

    Cheers!
    ~Lia

  109. A little slow on the notification, but I am in! I’ve been already started my reading even though I hadn’t officially signed up. Peril the First – 2 down and 2 to go!

Thanks again Carl for getting us in the mood for fall reading.

  110. I’m in. I love reading spooky books. I’ll figure out which I’ll read and get it posted on my blog! Thanks for hosting this every year.

  111. Sorry I’m late – hope I can still get in on the action!

I’m having a horror-themed month on my blog for October, so this challenge seemed like the perfect one to try. Can’t wait to get started 🙂

  112. I can’t believe that I almost missed this challenge! Thanks for hosting it once again, Carl! Fall is incomplete without R.I.P. 🙂

  113. Hope I’m not too late to join in on the fun! Loved participating last year…you’re too cool for hosting this SIX years in a row!

  114. Awesome! I have just discovered you, so sorry if I am late. Can I still sign up for the R.I.P challenge? I don’t have a blog at the mo, but hope to very soon!!lol!! If I can join you all, then I would like to sign up for Peril the Second 🙂 Can’t wait!

    Lynne x

      1. Sorry to ask a really stupid question, but I’m guessings I don’t need to/can’t sign up on the sign up list as I don’t have a blog? Lynne x

  115. I’m signing up closer to the end point than the beginning, but I just never got around to it, though I’ve been reading books that qualify. I didn’t want to miss out though!

  116. My two books for Peril the Second are :

    Twilight – Stephanie Meyers
Red Riding Hood – Stephanie Cartwright

I have also just read The Magic Cottage -James Herbert, just to add on an extra one!

I am also adding Peril on the Screen for which I have watched the BBC adaption of Jane Eyre. i LOVE this SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much 😀

    1. OMG!!!! It’s been a very long day and my brain is obviously frazzled – I can’t believe I put the wrong author :-O. My post SHOULD read :

Red Riding Hood – Sarah Blakley-Cartwright.

Phew! Glad I cleared that one up!lol!

  117. I do this anyway every October; might as well share here.

Blood Work – Kim Harrison (graphic novel)
The Business of Death – Trent Jamieson

*No relation to the Jason Voorhees movies. Think “Warehouse 13” with 1980s effects and a more overt horror theme.

  118. How’d I miss this all these years?
This is my favorite book and movie genre!!

    I’m joining and doing:
    Peril The Third
    Peril Of The Short Story
    Peril On The Screen

    Thanks for hosting!

  119. Man, I linked here from someone else’s post and just realized this was for last year. Going now to the current round!
