I have been sidetracked by trees. Yes, you read that right, trees. There was a moment in the movie Elizabethtown (which I loved) where Orlando Bloom is standing in front of the Survivor Tree in Oklahoma City and Kirsten Dunst’s voice is in the background saying something to the effect of “this is my favorite tree…and I love trees.” There is something in the inflection of her voice that resonates so strongly with me. I love trees as well. I get that.
My intention was to make today’s Friday Favorites post about Endicott Studios. Stealing an idea from the Winter 2006 issue of Faerie Magazine, I was going to include pictures of artists’ work who are part of The Endicott Circle with the text. To that end I chose Virginia Lee as the first artist to look at. And I became lost in the woods, enchanted, and thus today is all about this wonderful artist. (Endicott will be next week, early, I promise).

Grind House: A theater playing back-to-back films exploiting sex, violence, and other extreme subject matter.
Grindhouse: A film showcasing a double-feature of films by famed directors Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, celebrating the 1970’s grind house films in all their graphic glory.

As I mentioned in a previous post, reading the Howard Chaykin/Mike Mignola graphic novel adaptation of Fritz Leiber’s characters Fafhred and the Gray Mouser merely whet my appetite for Leiber’s work without bedding her back down. Thus I found myself purchasing the first book, in the reissued Dark Horse format.

As it usually does, one book begets another. Shouldn’t there be book birth control or something? Having that taste of the first Fritz Leiber Lankhmar novel in Chaykin/Mignola’s graphic novel adaptation of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser made me want to read the rest of that story. So much so that I stopped by Barnes and Noble at lunch today thinking, “There’s no way they’ll have this anyway”. Lo and behold, they had the Dark Horse edition after all. After spending a few minutes together I realized we were a perfect match, so I signed the adoption papers and brought it home. I sure hope it is house trained…
