The long-awaited (especially by those of us who waited through several scheduled and missed release dates) art book by Charles Vess finally saw publication a few months back and it seemed prudent to resist urges to tear right into it so that I could save it for the Once Upon a Time Challenge. It was a good choice…a great choice. This wonderfully designed book of wonders was the perfect book to begin the challenge with, and on Sunday, March 21st I spent a long afternoon basking in the warm glow of one of the best fantasy illustrators alive today.

“Life is made of moments, small pieces of glittering mica in a long stretch of gray cement. It would be wonderful if they came to us unsummoned, but particularly in lives as busy as the ones most of us lead now, that won’t happen. We have to teach ourselves how to live, really live…to love the journey, not the destination.”

In addition to the desire for the mythic and the fantastical, the scent of spring in the air has also brought with it a desire to revisit the nonfiction work of authors I have personally discovered over the last few years, in particular Anne Fadiman, Nick Hornby, and Anna Quindlen.

In scouring the library catalog to add books for re-reading, like Quindlen’s excellent, How Reading Changed My Life, I saw this little gem that I had not yet read. While not profound in the “I’ve never heard that before” department, this quick read has nevertheless served to remind me of the need to consciously take the time to enjoy the simple things.

Tolkien Reading Day

Though it is late in the afternoon to be posting about this, in the spirit of the Once Upon a Time Challenge I must share with those who did not already know that March 25th is Tolkien Reading Day

The collective vibe of a host of kindred spirits must have reached out to me because even before I knew this was the case I used my middle of the night insomnia to begin reading The Two Towers.

Tolkien purists will no doubt question my blasphemy at heading this post with an image from the film version of The Return of the King. There is a method to my madness.

Once Upon a Time IV

“I felt a curious thrill, as if something had stirred in me, half wakened from sleep. There was something very remote and strange and beautiful behind those words, if I could grasp it, far beyond ancient English.”

~J.R.R. Tolkien, on reading the Cynewulf lines about the star Earendel

What reader hasn’t recognized that “curious thrill” at one time or another? It is the opiate that we so often chase whenever we pick up the next book, that readiness to experience something, to connect on a level deeper than mere ink on the page. That chance for something “remote and strange and beautiful” is what repeatedly draws me back to fantasy, folklore, fairy tale, and mythology. Tales of this ken are built upon foundations of storytelling that date back to our most ancient ancestors. There is just “something” about this kind of story.

For the past four years I have hosted the Once Upon a Time Challenge, an opportunity to band together as a community to celebrate story, in this case the kind that fits roughly under one’s own personal definition of four categories: fantasy, folklore, fairy tale and mythology. As spring rapidly approaches in the Northern Hemisphere, the desire for these stories threatens to overwhelm, and with that, it is time to make the fourth annual Once Upon a Time Challenge official.

But first, please follow the jump and allow me to tell you about a wonderful sponsor for this year’s challenge:
