Remembering the Future

“…so i will spend the next few days reveling in the past & in memories, collecting myself in the present, & looking to the future…which promises many new things & much Change, along with all that comes with these things.”

-Jennifer Cakert, 2006

Those words.

A little over one year into this experience we call blogging I (and many others) lost a dear friend. Jennifer–Jenn See to the blogging community–left this world with a sudden and untimely death. In addition to leaving behind a loving family and dear friends, she left behind a group of us who were inspired by her creativity and just plain enjoyed having the kind of fun, sometimes nonsensical, sometimes intensely profound conversations that we all experience in this community. She also left behind a legacy with her words, her poetry, her pictures, and a creative spark that lives on in so very many ways.

That was four years ago, and those words were the last that Jenn See wrote, appearing in a post on Wednesday, June 21st, 2006. The next day she was gone. She was only 26 years old.

Over the past four years those words have sparked a number of different personal feelings and reactions: Shock, disbelief and the cruel fact that life isn’t fair gave way to profound sadness and eventually to inspiration. Now they are a mantra of sorts, a touchstone, a talisman. Yet they retain a degree of melancholy that I suspect will never completely fade.

They say every woman’s trash is another woman’s treasure…or something to that effect. 😉 Junk Beautiful is all about the treasure. Among other things, the approaching summer has brought with it a desire to redecorate. How much the budget will actually allow is a mystery at this point, but I decided to feed this desire by scouring my local library for decorating books to start the creative juices flowing. On my second trip for this specific purpose I discovered this amazing book.

Those of you who read my review of Michael de Meng’s book,The Secret of Rusty Things, or any of a number of Friday Favorites artist features know that I am particularly attracted to found art projects, be they pieces of art or creatively re-purposed items, like those featured in Junk Beautiful.

I am fully prepared to admit up front that the “trash” vs. “treasure” viewpoints may come into play as I expose you to this book. Wherever you stand on the issue is fine by me, I know what I like, and I am beyond thrilled that the found art aesthetic is becoming more and more prominent in magazines, books, and on various online sites. It sparks my imagination and stirs my creative juices.

Summer Dreams, make me feel…ambitious

With the Once Upon a Time Challenge IV winding down (only one week left),

*pause for Public Service Announcement*

“Stay tuned this week for an artist interview and giveaway”

and with temperatures and humidity rising, my thoughts have naturally strayed to summer.

Summer reading to be exact.

Signs are cropping up in libraries all over announcing Summer Reading Programs. I remember the first time I ever heard about them. A neighbor of ours was participating and keeping a list of the books she was reading. It was one of those lightbulb/angels singing moments. Although I wasn’t officially participating in it, I started then and there keeping a list for myself. My best guest, based on where we were living at the time, is that this occurred the summer before I entered the third grade. It is quite possible that my sometimes neglected love of making lists was birthed in that very moment. Certainly the seed was sown for the attraction of keeping lists of books read. That list making has become as natural as breathing to those of us who consider ourselves book bloggers.

Thus it seems only natural that as summer approaches I would find myself making a list of books that I feel, at the moment, an interest in trying to get to this summer. I tried to keep the list from being too long, while knowing all too well that the stars would have to align perfectly for me to get through all these before the fifth annual R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril Challenge (R.I.P.) begins on September 1st.

Warren Ellis is something of a phenomenon in the comic book industry, consistently putting together series that garner well deserved attention. That being said, I hadn’t read any of his work until a year or so ago when I got caught up in his excellent series, Freakangels. His more well known work, Planetary and Transmetropolitan, are works that I had never gotten into when they began and have yet to read. More and more, however, I am discovering that Warren Ellis is a name synonymous with quality storytelling, and he seems to have a particular talent for being able to tell a good story in a very brief amount of space.

Guided Tours and Intrepid Exploration…

(image cropped from this picture…cannot find the source)

…Yes, it is a post about Books and Reading.

Jeff S. posed an interesting question in one of his comments in the book review post for A Game of Thrones by author George R. R. Martin: Who are your favorite authors and how did you discover them?

Rare is the book lover who doesn’t love to talk about their books, their inspirations, etc. and I thought it was a capital idea to pose his question to the blog community at large. Some of us have discovered life long favorite books/authors because of the timely intervention of a skillful tour guide, someone whose passionate recommendation of that author caused us to give him/her a try. Others have blazed their own path, picking up a book from a heretofore unexplored author only to discover that they have laid their hands on a precious treasure–there’s gold in them there books! Truth be told, I imagine that most readers over a certain age have favorites that they tried based on the referral of another reader AND have been an intrepid explorer in their own reading lives.

So I am splitting up Jeff’s “Who Are Your *Favorite Authors?” question into two parts:

A. Those that entered your life because of the referral of another person.

and

B. Those that were your very own discovery.

While I am more than happy with a brief list, I love details, so feel free to either answer in the comments section with a quick list, or write a small novel. Your choice. You can see my answers after the jump.
