It is unbelievable… September has passed and it is October 1st. I love the month of October. I know that you already know that but I just had to mention it again. October is the month for unabashedly embracing frightful things. The temperature gets cooler, the nights are increasingly more dark, and Halloween is on its way. Am I excited about October? I’ll let the fact that I planned out things I could post this month approximately two months ago be my answer.
I revelled in Halloween as a child and I still have a great fondness for the holiday as an adult. It is this month of the year that my thoughts turn to Poe and Stoker, Vincent Price and Peter Lorre, and of course how I’m going to carve my pumpkins this year.
October is also major league baseball playoffs. I did not grow up a fan of baseball but as an adult I’ve developed a real passion for the sport, most especially during the playoffs/World Series. Other than the NFL there are no better playoffs in my opinion. The stadiums rock and you can feel the energy even as you sit in front of the idiot box. This year there is a wonderful foretaste of the playoffs in the American League Wild Card race between the Yankees and Red Sox. Last night’s Yankees/Red Sox game was reminiscent of last year’s ALCS…the best playoff series that I have ever seen, bar none. October baseball is incredible!

Things of a macabre, spooky, chilling and mysterious nature will dominate my posts this month. There are a whole list of likes and passions that I have waited to post on simply because they fit better thematically in the month of October. I’m very excited about blogging this month. Not all posts will be this way but many of them will be. There are birthdays, baseball, and other non-scary things that I will also post about this month. I hope you all enjoy the month with me and throughout the month that you take the opportunity to share the things that give you thrills, chills, and goosebumps. In the spirit of the month I’ve made a rather crude Halloweenish banner to head the blog. This may change and evolve throughout the month. Included is Ingrid Pitt from The House That Dripped Blood and of course the Corpse Bride.

True to my word, on a non-horrifying note (I hope) I’d like to wish my brother-in-law John a very Happy Birthday. I went to college with John and worked with him an entire semester not knowing that he had a sister. Mary was out of school that sememster and when she returned my roommate and I mistakingly thought she was John’s girlfriend when she came up and hugged him one morning at lunch. Thankfully she wasn’t and the rest (as far as I go) is history.
John shares his father’s unique sense of humor (read corny) and couples it with a love of movies, games, etc that is very similar to my own (I must admit that I too have a corny sense of humor as those who rode to and from Chicago with me can testify). John and his family have recently moved to the Kansas City area and its great to have them close. Throughout the years I haven’t been able to spend alot of time with John so its been nice to catch movies and go out to lunch lately. Despite the usual stereotypes about in-laws I am fortunate to be blessed with ones that I love and enjoy and John is a terrrific brother-in-law. Please join me in wishing him a very happy, blessed October birthday!
A happy non-spooky birthday to John, then!
And a great month to you, Carl!
Love the new banner! Can’t wait to see what October brings….muhahahahah! Oh and Happy Birthday, John π
Happy Birthday to my big brother (read O-L-D-E-R brother). John, you have always been a super brother and were always willing to share your cool toys (Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs, Legos, etc) with me. I loved growing up with you. Thanks for teaching me to throw a football and for letting me hang out with you and your friends. I love you!
Hey, don’t you think it is strange that I am wearing a summer dress and John has on long sleeves and long pants? I asked mom about this picture a few years back, and she said that up through 2nd or 3rd grade he was always wanting to wear warm clothes even when it was pretty warm outside. His second grade teacher even expressed concern about his choice of warm clothing, but he seemed perfectly happy.
Happy Birthday John!!
Can’t wait to see what the month brings. Halloween is my favorite holiday besides Christmas.
Love the banner.
Ahhhhh…….John and Mary look so cute! I always wished I had a big brother. Happy Birthday John!
I love this time of year as well. At least here in MN I will actually get to experience a real autumn! The leaves have started to change in the Twin Cities and the weather is jumping between 32 and 80…
I hope to do some decorations since last year it was our third night in the new house and I was too busy wondering where my work clothes were.
The weather has been pretty jumpy around here as well Shannin. It gets old! I may do some decorating tonight…depends on how pooped I am after spending the day at the local amusement park with my relations (celebrating late Sept. birthday of my niece Haley).
Happy birthday, John. You have a neat sister. I love the fall too. It starts to feel cosy when it gets dark earlier. Although, I think I love this time of year so much because I don’t have to do anything except enjoy it.
Cool banner, Carl. Holy cleavage, Batman!
Hey, where’s John’s blog?!
All good Vampire-babes need cleavage Rob…distracts from the whole biting/sucking blood thing.
I don’t believe John has a blog…at least not yet! I heard that your sister is joining the blogging ranks, though.
Happy birthday John!
As much as I hate the Red Sox and Yankee’s I love watching their match up’s. It’s such high drama. I really wish we had at least one good team in Kansas City. Such is the high’s and low’s of sports fans. Some day our Royals will rise again! Just maybe not in my lifetime. π
Maybe not in anyone’s lifetime! π
I’m looking forward to the Sox and Yankees hooking up again…if they both make it that far. Those are usually some dramatic games. I like the Sox just fine…not a huge fan but I’ll root for them in the post season. Heck the team is made up of ex Royals players so we KC folks ought to root for them!
True. There are a lot of ex-Royals on the Sox. I think a rematch of Yankee’s / Sox is all but inevitable. The White Sox aren’t playing well and I just don’t believe the Angels will step it up.
I hope so, though there is a part of me that would get great satisfaction out of seeing the Yankees get swept out in the first round. I think we should all root for the Padres. π
