Next Stop, Disneyland!!! (and book porn and more)

WE ARE GOING TO THE SUPERBOWL…THE BIG DANCE…WOO HOO!!!

Some last minute line-up changes, including pulling Drew Brees off the bench and giving him the starting job this week, has given my team, The Conqueror Worms, their first ever (and incidently my first ever) Fantasy Football playoff win with a 111-92 victory over Jimmy’s Grind House (who owned my behind just a few weeks prior).

Jeff’s team, Browncoats, put the beat down, for the second time in as many meetings, on the first place juggernaut, Italian Stallions, to earn the right to go toe-to-toe with me in the Superbowl! I am certainly sorry for my brother-in-law, who I looked to get some vengeance on in the Big Game, but he got a wonderful consolation prize:

(You just knew I had to work a picture of Madelyn in here somewhere!)

There is still some drama in the Hands of Glory league as Cameron’s Robinson’s Ruckus is a mere 6 points behind John’s Turf Buffet in the Consolation Bowl, with a running back going tonight, in the battle to see who wins first pick (or pick of draft position) in next year’s draft!

Since Jeff got his first win over me in two years of Fantasy Football, I think he owes me and should make sure that his team takes a fall to mine next weekend. However, allow me to offer you my heartiest Congratulations now, it should be great fun talking smack this week.

For those of you who prefer to not mix your fantasy with sports, the above is a little early-Christmas book porn to satisfy your cravings. Do you suppose there is any way I could take two weeks off instead of one so that I could have an entire week to just bury myself in the pages of these books? Santa (Chris, Cory, Jeff, Pat, Stephanie) surely has been good to me!

I need to give an early plug for The Brief History of the Dead by Kevin Brockmeier. I am exactly at the half way point and thus far I am amazed. Review is sure to be coming in the next couple of days.

It is Monday! A week and a day until Christmas!!! We had a beautiful snowfall on Saturday that helped fuel the Christmas spirit. If you need a boost to your own Christmas spirit, make sure you are checking out Kailana’s Blog Advent Calendar 2007. Each day of December one or two fellow bloggers are posting about Christmas. Each day is like opening a window on an Advent calendar in which you will find Christmas memories, favorite recipes, family traditions, etc. I will be participating with Kailana on December 24th. There have been alot of great posts thus far, but one of my favorites has to be this Christmas songs quiz by Raidergirl. After you are done you can highlight right after each question to find out the answer. Very fun.

And speaking of Kailana, yesterday was her two year anniversary in the blog world. Happy Anniversary!!!

The week ahead as we count down to Christmas promises book reviews, Christmas-related posts, and Something Perilous! Then after the holidays comes one of my favorite times in the blogging year, the week of Round-Ups, where so many of us put closure to our year by posting our books-read lists, favorites lists, plans for next year, etc. I just love those glimpses into the lives of others.

Please join me in having the most wonderful, stress-free, pleasant rest of December that we can possibly have! Happy Monday everyone!!!

  1. Very nice move my friend, nice indeed! You see, have faith in Brees and he’ll take you to the Super Bowl! Now if he’d only do that for us…

Nice stack of books! Santa stopped by my house this weekend too and I was filled with glee! Thanks Carl 🙂 Old Man’s War sure didn’t stay on my wish list long! And the card was just perfect…it had me laughing when I opened it while at the same time enjoying the music as it’s one of my favorite Christmas songs.

Happy Monday to you too! Hope you have a good week!

  2. Woo! Hoo! We’re going to the Super Bowl. The Browncoats promise this will NOT be a repeat of the Battle of Serenity Valley! 🙂 It’s going to a fun week.

Chris – I must remind you I also have Colston on my team so you have two players in the Super Bowl!

  3. Jeff, Another brilliant pick! My jersey that I wear every weekend for the Saints games is a Brees jersey, but I can’t tell you how tempted I’ve been to add a Colston jersey to the collection. He’s one hell of a player. And he’s consistent…he never lets us down! We’re too steeped in superstition down here though so I’m convinced that if I, one lone fan, change the jersey I wear every Sunday, it will screw up everything for the Saints….so I’ve gotta stick with just the Brees jersey 😉

  4. Actually I haven’t seen it Tom! I had sneak preview passes for last Monday night and my sister had her baby and the weather was so crappy that we decided not to see it. Then Mary and I were going to go on Friday and we opted to stay home and catch up on House, Bones, and Pushing Daisies. We may be going to see it this coming Saturday morning. Sorry to disappoint!

Deslily, I am not a hard gift person as books are always appreciated!!!

  5. Great post! Thanks for the Advent Calendar Ad, it has been a lot of fun this year! You have got a great haul of books this year. My receiving of Spectrum 14 is enough for me, but I know I am getting gift cards for Christmas, so I know me and the bookstore are going to be seeing a lot of each other. Any recs for me to check out? I tend to get a few random books with gift cards because then if I do not like them, they were not my wasted money…

And I seriously need to start watching football again. Well, any sport really. I was really slack this year!

  6. With 100 or so pages to go I can thus far really recommend The Brief History of the dead and also Mary Modern, which I reviewed on Nov. 30th, I believe. Both have a bit of a fantastical element that reminds me aesthetically of the work of Neil Gaiman and Jonathan Carroll.

I think you would like the Liz Williams Detective Inspector Chen books, starting with The Snake Agent, if you haven’t read those. De Lint is always a good choice. Hmmm…we’ll be featuring sci fi here next month so Scalzi is a good choice, I’ve heard the Crucible books for Star Trek are pretty good…I plan on checking out at least one of those during the Sci Fi Experience.

And football is about to get really fun with playoffs on the horizon.

Becky: I’ll participate, it sounds fun and ties in to what I and so many of us do at the end of the year anyway. Thanks for letting us know.

SQT: It is a good problem, isn’t it?

  7. Chris – I can certainly respect your superstious ways plus I’m a big Brees fan as well. Carl and I were commenting today that we both most likley will have Brees and Colston going they are most likley to cancel each other out points wise for us. San Diego has to be kicking themselves for letting Brees go.

  8. Sweet stack of books there!! I can’t wait to see what you actually get under the tree!

Congrats on the Superbowl!! My husband’s league doesn’t have a playoff. And it’s a TIGHT race right now!! A late pickup of Jamal Lewis has really helped since Gore is having a dismal year. And Moss and Colston have been BIG points in the wide receiver column!! Here’s hoping the Bears have a good game tonight. HATE the Vikings!!

  9. Every time I buy a book for the cover…and it turns out to be good, I feel so validated. Thanks for validating me and I’m so happy you liked it. That really is a very cool pile. And it isn’t even Christmas yet!

  10. Oh, I almost forgot about the sci-fi experience… good excuse to read all the Star Trek books I have piling up! I planned on getting two of the books you mentioned, but I will look into the others!

  11. Okay, before you rush out and by Brief History of the Dead, which I finished last night, check out my review (coming soon). The ending of this book really makes it a love it or hate it kind of book which I will discuss, sans spoilers, in the review.

  12. Yeah, not sure if I want it or not. Have to see if I have any gift card money left, I will make it the ‘maybe’ book. 🙂

  13. I see no reason not to mix football and books. And hey, anything’s good when you throw in a picture of a beautiful little baby! Nice stack of books you got there…wonder how much that pile will grow by the end of the year…

  14. Probably just a wee bit more growth before the end of the year. 😉

I love mixing football and reading. I try to have a book with me to read during commercials and also during the game if it isn’t as exciting as it should be. Nothing like multi-tasking!!!

  15. Ah, stress-free and working in retail just don’t seem to go hand-in-hand, unfortunately. I’m trying, though!

  16. well done on getting to the superbowl! very cool 🙂

oh, and wouldn’t i love to grant you (and myself) an extra week off to read… !
