(Since I don’t have a digital camera Dominique was wonderful enough to take a few pics for me this morning and email them to me. Thanks Nick!!!)
Finally, it has snowed. I love snow, especially during the holiday season. In my perfect world there would be a light snow every day starting the day after Thanksgiving and lasting until New Year’s Day. It started snowing yesterday morning and stayed at it through the entire day and all through the night. In total we were blessed with about 10 inches of snow.
One of the best things about snow is that feeling that you can play hookey. It began for us last night. We dropped our daughter off at youth group and she went home to spend the night with friends. We went to an amazingly empty mall (best time to shop…snowstorms!!!) so that I could have Mary try on clothes for me to help me with my Christmas shopping. There were more employees than customers making it alot of fun for shopping. We returned home to watch one of our Netflix movies:
The Wedding Date was a really fun movie. I had some doubts considering it was a somewhat different take on the Pretty Woman story (a movie I’ve grown to despise over the years), but it ended up being an enjoyable romantic comedy. If you’ve watched Will & Grace then you know that Debra Messing is wonderful, and Dermot Mulroney was good as well. I really hope Messing does more films as she seems very down to earth and has great comedic timing. The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the music. Not only are there a few very nostalgic (for 80’s children) Air Supply songs, but there is a wonderful score and a few terrific musical numbers by Michael Buble. I particularly like Home and Sway. I recommend it for lighthearted fun.
I love the way the world looks at night when the ground is covered with snow and the sky is white with falling snow. The outdoors have a glow that is not replicated in any other situation and I found myself getting up a few times throughout the night to look outside and enjoy the beauty. Mary’s work was closed and I took the day off and we slept in. We awoke to the most perfect, pristine, snow-covered world. Mary made us a big breakfast and we sat down to watch:
The Family Man is a retelling of the classic It’s a Wonderful Life. It borrows the themes of that Frank Capra classic but maintains its own identity. I love Christmas movies and this is one that I both look forward to and dread at the same time. (Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen it) I love the little girl Annie so much in this movie and when Jack (Nicolas Cage) goes back to his actual life the thought that she does not exist makes me tear up everytime. Mary likes to point out that the idea is there that they will have this child in the future but its not the same for me. It just gets to me. Its an exquisite sadness though as I really love the heart of this film. Nicolas Cage and Tea Leoni are great and have such a wonderful chemistry. Tea Leoni brings such life and passion to the role that she makes it rise above what could be a cookie-cutter female romantic lead character. Don Cheadle and Jeremy Piven are also great in this. And of course Makenzie Vega is a darling (I was surprised to find out that she was the girl who played Nancy at age 11 in Sin City…thought that girl looked familiar!) I am man enough to admit that this is one of those sappy Christmas romances that I enjoy watching every year!
I’ve enjoyed playing hookey today and spending time with my wife. Tonight we will watch another Christmas film with our daughter and enjoy the warmth and comfort of home. I’m thrilled that it snowed and hope for more as the season continues. I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season thus far and wish you joy, peace, comfort and relaxation as December rolls along.

Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! We ended up with 12 wonderful inches of snow in Olathe. The kids have enjoyed playing in it and after shoveling the drive today we went sledding up at the school. It was so much fun. It really feels like christmas time now.
Hey buddy I told you The Wedding Date was a fun flick and The Family Man is a good one too. Keri and finished watching Mostly Martha last night and it was excellent. I also watched the first half of Sense and Sensibility last night and it is quite funny so far too.
Angela I can’t wait to hear how Narnia was, too
You were right, I didn’t doubt you, just whether or not it would be too much like the things that annoyed me in Pretty Woman. Thankfully it was not really focused on that aspect at all. Some of the deleted scenes were really interesting and the short “making of” interview with Debra Messing was great. We watched the outtakes of The Family Man today and they were fun. Nicolas Cage and Jeremy Piven seem to be unable to be onscreen together without cracking each other up.
I’m sure kids all over Kansas City enjoyed playing in the snow today. It was good and deep. Reminded me of snows in Nebraska when I was a kid. Its gonna be butt cold (don’t know where that saying originated with me) tonight so I recommend staying indoors!
Glad you guys enjoyed Mostly Martha, its a good one as is Sense and Sensibility.
I don’t mind snow, but could do without the single digit temps.
We just watched The Family Man last week. I really thought Tea was great, and Annie was adorable.
I’m with you concerning the temps Shannin. Its supposed to be 6 below tonight…and that is not factoring in wind chill!!!
Baby, Its Cold Outside…indeed!
beautiful pictures, and i love the blue shadows π
How fun that you guys got the day off together. It was a good day to be at home!
*envious* we never get snow. Well, when i say never, I of course mean we occasionally get a few centimeters of snow, usually in January sometime. Still, those little falls are usually enough to bring the country to a standstill. Its great.
Brrrrrrrrrr!!!! Looks a wee bit frosty for my California blood! (Clearly my blood has thinned since leaving Chicago…don’t miss having to scrape windows even a little bit.)
I can’t believe you got to stay home yesterday!!
I wish it wasn’t so cold out. Mike and I watched Surviving Christmas last weekend and there is a scene where they go sledding which made me want to go sledding. Then, on my way home from work Tuesday afternoon, I saw a bunch of people sledding down this big hill. Remember when you, Mike, and I spent forever in Target picking out sleds last year but then it never snowed enough? If I could skip out of work today, I would dress up really, really warm and ggggoooo sssslllleeeedddddiiiinnnggg.
The Wedding Date is a very cute movie. I watched it over the summer with mom and dad. I need to rent it again b/c I don’t remember much of it.
Hopefully I get to go see Narnia tonight…it snowed here overnight, so it’s a regular winter wonderland. They even cancelled school for the day.
I loved the Family Man! Of course, I also like It’s a Wonderful Life so that might explain that! I haven’t seen the Wedding Date though.
Have fun in the snow!
You’ll have to ask Karen how snow days are with 3 bored children and an almost remodeled (and dusty) house. Jaden’s boots and winter outside attire is still in storage and man it is almost too cold to play in the snow. Too cold for snowmen or snowballs. I love my 4WD truck!!!
I need to buy a 4WD. My truck is crap (stuck in the snow today as a matter of fact) so I am using the Tracker, which actually gets around great in 2W and 4WD!
Why would your kids winter clothes be in storage? Its December man!!! π
Good for you Ciera, glad you’re getting a day off as well. Enjoy Narnia…I look forward to catching it this weekend as well.
I can live without scraping windows, Suzanne…that’s what the defrost is for!
I’ve been out of snow country for a while but I remember that defrost is not going to be particularly helpful when you have several inches or more of snow to remove before pulling out of the driveway! I remember one blizzard in the Windy City when as soon as I “finished” getting snow off the van the snow had left me right back where I started. I especially don’t miss the days when it is so cold the inside of your nostrils freeze (feels like bugs crawling around). So, I shall enjoy the photographs and remember only the good parts about snow (which admittedly is pretty special) while I enjoy California’s more moderate weather.
I find a combination of starting the car 20 minutes early and then driving really fast gets all the snow right off of the car! π
(giggle)
Suzanne, it would be funny if he weren’t serious. I made him stop and brush the hood off yesterday.
We did have great fun staying home. I really like Family Man. I liked the Wedding Date, but do have a little trouble with the paid escort concept. I feel that the topic of being a prostitute was treated too lightly in both this movie and in Pretty Woman.
The best part of buying a house was getting a garage. I still have to scrape snow that falls while I’m at work, but it’s so nice not to have to do it in the morning.
I wouldn’t know, we only have a 1 car garage.
What do you care Carl? (We already know your method for removing snow!!!) Your poor unloved truck just gets parked out in the cold and the wet. Its probably out there now, shivering and feeling sad.
Its spent the last several days being stuck and useless out in the yard, but I got it out tonight and it’ll be ready for work tomorrow.
My favorite movie is Sixteen Candles. I know it is kind of a chick flick but I just love those Howard Hughes films and Molly Ringwald is Hot!!! (Sorry Karen:) My favorite part is when she finally gets a “real date” with Jake; he’s pretty hot too, for a guy. (Sorry Rudolpho) Anyway, keep the good movie reviews coming and if anyone would like me to review my favorite 80’s movies let me know, I would be glad to, I have an exhaustive list that I have compiled on my home PC. TTFN!
Sixteen Candles is great. I remember seeing it in the theater when it came out. Go ahead and review your favorite 80’s movies Tom!!!
Once again my “friend” is speaking out of turn for me. Although I liked 16 candles and the continual reference to the “gonger” ( no more yanky my wanky) I cannot take the blame for the previous blog. Sorry. The tip off is blog talk, TTFN. I have no clue what that is. The original Tom is usually a little more shall we say, masculine and just a little sarcastic. Anyway Carl I am sorry you fell for that; I keep my name and address in for convenience but I’ll need to be a little more careful. You can also find her remarks on Karen’s blog under snow day. It’s Rolanda.
Or LaFawnda, I can never remember.
Actually its “donger” and not “gonger” and the post is more accurate than you know. Sir Tom is an 80’s freak although he probably doesn’t like “chick flicks” as much as I do. Considering the nudity and crude sexual references though I wouldn’t really consider 16 Candles a chick flick. I do love that movie though. Caught it on TV the other day and laughed my behind off….Long Duck Dong is the best! And in the 80’s Molly Ringwald was hot…nerd hot, but hot nonetheless!!!
More and more I’m convinced that Tom is leading a double life as a cross-dresser and I think these dual personality blog entries are added proof! π
And you’re right TTFN should’ve tipped me off right away…why in the world would Tom himself use the acronym Tom’s Totally F*cking Nuts? π
I can”t hardly type for the laughing tears…
as the double apostrophes would indicate! π
