Friday Favorites: A Preview

The much ballyhooed Fantasy Challenge kicks off this coming Monday, March 26th. Before you rush off to work, school, or whatever other fun things a Monday brings, be sure to stop by and read Monday’s post outlining the various aspects of the challenge.

As a preview: the challenge will encompass books that fit in the fantasy, fairy tale, mythology, and folklore categories. These are very broad categories that overlap and also encompass several subgenres, so finding stuff to read for the challenge will not be difficult.

The plan is to have a multi-tiered challenge so that each of you who decide to sign on can find the challenge that best fits your busy lifestyle and reading habits. The goal isn’t to see how many books one can read, it is to relish the many magical, fantastical books that fall into these categories. I hope to see people try things they haven’t tried before, re-read old favorites, and share with others the books that you love. I hope we end up with an even bigger reading list that we had for the first RIP Challenge.

The challenge will last from Monday the 26th until Midsummer Night’s Eve, June 21st.

Along the way I will feature Friday Favorites artists whose work is of a fantastical nature, including the work of the man whose art is at the start of this post, Charles Vess. I will also do posts on musicians that I like whose work is ethereal, magical, and in my mind fits in these categories. There will be a variety of contests along the way, some essays on fantastic fiction, etc.

Included in Monday’s post will be some suggested readings for those of you who have not read alot in these areas.

I welcome everyone’s participation. I look forward to unveiling all the specific details on Monday. Thank you all in advance for joining in.

Have a great weekend everyone, I can’t wait to see what everyone will be reading. See you all on Monday!

  1. I’m in – I have at least 6 books (either new or that I want to re-read) in my stack right now that would qualify…

  2. 3 months long.. I can read a dozen fantasy books in that time. And I probably have at least that many on my bookshelves that I haven’t gotten to yet.
Plus, my vacation next month… I’m excited to have a week of nothing to do besides read!… and lay at the beach of course…

  3. Eventhough I just got back from my own mini-vacation Angela, I’m jealous!

    Glad you both are in!

  4. I’ve been eagerly awaiting this opportunity to indulge in several of my favorite genres/sub-genres! I’m mixing children’s lit, YA, and adult fantasy and may also include nonfiction about fantasy/myth/fairytales! Oh, the decadent pleasures awaiting!

  5. Oh….I’m in too!! Fantasy and Sci-fi are new genres for me. So, I’m sure I’ll be able
to find SOMETHING to read!! I look forward to suggestions!

  6. I can’t wait for this challenge! (Like I need a reason to read fantasy). I’m excited about the whole thing and I really like the whole package of stuff your working on for this.

  7. I love reading fantasy, but sometimes forget to read it. I’m especially looking forward to what everyone else will be reading–I am always looking for new-to-me authors to try.

  8. I already have three books picked and I’ll be heading to Borders tomorrow to get another one of Patricia MdKillip’s. Wow! This is exciting. That’s an incrediable list, Les. That would keep me busy for awhile, even alphabetized – impressive.

  9. I already read lots of fantasy, so this is my regular stomping ground. I’m “cheating”. I am just going to post my fantasy tbr pile and see what I can read off it. πŸ™‚ The sad thing is the number of books on said TBR pile, and how… they are not all the books I have, just the ones I want to read over others.

  10. I look forward to hearing more about this one. I just picked several fantasy titles that I would love to squeeze into my challenge schedule.

  11. I HAD to squeeze this one in . fantasy is my fav and your one of the few blogs i keep coming back to because of that. I have 5 books that I have chosen. 3 are book 1 of series that so many of my friends/book buddies have read and are like ‘read it already’. the other 2 is vol 2 & 3 of Eric Lusterbaders fantasy series… I bought them hard cover and never got around to reading them ! The shame!

  12. I’m definitely joining! I hardly ever read fantasy so this will be a great way to get out of my reading comfort zone πŸ™‚

  13. This is one challenge I can’t fail (well, maybe, I’ve failed both the ones I started this year!) I’m already planning on reading The Dark is rising sequence, and I’ll be very interested in your suggestions.
