Freedom!!!

fouronthefourth

Happy Independence Day, America! I hope everyone has plans to enjoy good food, good fellowship with friends and loved ones, and a night filled with colorful explosions. My 4th of July started out with a listen to various people reading the Declaration of Independence on NPR as I drove out in the wee hours to participate in an early morning run. In addition to celebrating the men and women throughout our history who strove to give us freedom, today also marks a day of personal freedom–today ends the Runner’s World Run Streak.

The commitment was to run at least one mile per day from Memorial Day to July 4th. Sadly I failed, missing one run last week when I left it until the evening and a lightning storm stopped me from making it out that day. In order to celebrate the end I participated in the Ward Parkway Four on the Fourth here in Kansas City. The weather was gorgeous at the 7 a.m. start. Low 60’s, Sunny. The course was on a city street (Ward Parkway) that has several gradual inclines and declines. I was thrilled to finish the 4 miles with an 8:31 second mile average, and I ran the final mile in 7:54. Felt great!

I’m looking forward to getting back to a regular running schedule with alternating cross-training days. I’m eying my next Half-Marathon and am going to be starting that training routine.

Have a Happy Independence Day, everyone, and a Happy Thursday to those of you not celebrating today.

Tomorrow begins The Dragon’s Path Group Read. Late tonight or early tomorrow morning the schedule will be posted. Look forward to experiencing Daniel Abraham’s fantasy adventure with all of you participating.

    1. Thanks. It was annoying though to just fall one day short. And I would have went ahead and ran in the rain but figured running with that much lightning close by was a bit foolish. Happy 4th to you and your family, Amanda.

  1. Cool. Great weather, great run and a 364/365 record. They say a slight blemish adds to the beauty. HAPPY 4TH TO YOU AND THE WHOLE FAMILY!

    1. Well, no, not quite that many days. It was actually a 66/67 days. I’m a blemished beauty, all right. 🙂 Happy 4th to you and Barbara, sounds like you guys have great plans.

  2. Oh I wish I had caught that on NPR. Hope you’ve been having a wonderful 4th. I hear the fireworks going off around town!

  3. So you missed one run in 67 days (correct?) — big deal cause it is still quite a fabulous accomplishment. I get that falling one day short is annoying though.
I suck these days. Don’t know what my problem is but I cannot get into a riding rhythm. It’s been two weeks since I rode last. Blah. I blame the kids …ha, bad excuse. Congrats on the run today, another fab accomplishment.

I love that you listened to the Declaration of Independence today….a great idea. I need to keep that in mind for next year. Today, I worked. Holiday pay so that helps but felt some what bummed that we didn’t do something with the kids; nothing traditional except Robert took the girls for fireworks tonight. I work tomorrow so I stayed home and Isaiah is asleep. Anyway….hope you had a great day with family and friends.

Looking forward to dragon’s path group read; I am liking the book so far.

  4. you only missed one day. That’s remarkable, Carl. I’m impressed. Hope you had a great fourth!
