“Any man can be a father, but it takes a special person to be a dad”
~Anonymous
I found this video a few weeks back on the blog of artist James Hance and knew immediately that it would be my Father’s Day post. Although my dad didn’t drive a JCB, before retirement he spent 40+ years at a job where every day was a “bloody hard day”. I am thankful those days are passed for him and have always been proud of him for the kind of dad he was, and the kind of dad he remains–a strong example of what it means to be a man and what it means to be a dad. And whenever we get together we enjoy a “top laugh”. I love you, Dad.
For all of you dads out there, Happy Father’s Day! You mean the world to us.
Enjoy the tune everyone, lyrics after the jump if you need ’em. (I especially like the part near the end when the song picks up speed) 🙂
Well, I’m rumblin’ in this JCB
I’m five years old and my dad’s giant sitting beside me
And the engine rattles my bum like berserk
While we’re singing
‘Don’t forget your shovel if you want to go to work!’
My dad’s totally had a bloody hard day
But he’s been good fun and bubblin and jokin’ away
And the procession of cars stuck behind
Are gettin all impatient and angry, but we don’t mind
And we’re holding up the bypass, oh
Me and my dad having a top laugh
Oh woah
Sittin on the toolbox, oh
And I’m so glad I’m not in school, boss
So glad I’m not in school
Oh no..
And we pull over to let the cars pass
And pull off again, speedin by the summer green grass
And we’re like giants up here in our big yellow digger
Like zoids, or transformers, or maybe even bigger
And I wanna transform into a Tyrannosaurus Rex!
And eat up all the bullies and the teachers and their pets
And I’ll tell all my mates, my dad’s ba barakas
Only with a JCB and Bruce Lee’s nunchuckas
And we’re holding up the bypass, oh
Me and my dad having a top laugh
Oh woah
Sittin on the toolbox, oh
And I’m so glad I’m not in school, boss
So glad I’m not in school
And we’re holding up the bypass, oh oh
Me and my dad having a top laugh
Oh woah
I’m sittin on the toolbox, oh oh
And I’m so glad I’m not in school, boss
So glad I’m not in school
Said I’m Luke, I’m five, and my dad’s Bruce Lee
Drives me round in his JCB
I’m Luke, I’m five, and my dad’s Bruce Lee
Drives me round in his JCB
I’m Luke, I’m five, and my dad’s Bruce Lee
Drives me round in his JCB
I’m Luke, I’m five, and my dad’s Bruce Lee
Drives me round
And we’re holding up the bypass, woah
Me and my dad havin a top laugh, oh woah
And I’m sittin on the toolbox, oh
And I’m so glad I’m not in school, boss
So glad I’m not in school
Aw, said
I’m Luke, I’m five, and my dad’s Bruce Lee
Drives me round in his JCB
I’m Luke, I’m five, and my dad’s Bruce Lee
Drives me round in his
Aw, I’m Luke, I’m five, and my dad’s Bruce Lee
Drives me round in his JCB
I’m Luke, I’m five, and my dad’s Bruce Lee
Drives me round in his JCB
Ah, Nizlopi were fantastic, I managed to see them live at an arts/music festival a few years ago, and they put on a cracking set.
I imagine so Darren. Yet another reason I love the internet. I never would have discovered this song/band otherwise.
This was big here a few christmases ago. I can’t remember if it got to number one or not, but a definite hit. Love it. (even if I boycott fathers day, mothers day, valentines day etc on account of them being fake. I just wish everyone a happy sunday!)
Fence: So what you are saying is that I’m behind the times! LOL! I know that isn’t what you are saying, but it is so true. I don’t mind the card company holidays. I don’t think they are special like Christmas, etc., but I still like to take the occasion to give well wishes anyway. And I’ll definitely take the ‘happy sunday’. After being without power yesterday and having it back today, it should be happy indeed. Hope yours is as well. 🙂
Not being a dad myself, I’ll wish you a very happy Father’s Day. I always thought that, in the interests of fairness, there should be some kind of Day for those of us who made the conscious decision not to have children, sort of a All Grown Up But A Non-Parent By Choice Guy Day… I’d suggest the appropriate gift on this day might be a really snazzy wrist watch.
Say, when’s the last time you saw the word “snazzy” in print?
Anyway, enjoy your day.
RkR: I think that is a “snazzy” idea. You just need to convince Hallmark or American Greetings that there is a market for it and a holiday will be born! Hope you are enjoying your day as well.
Does my wife know me or what? Check out my Father’s Day gift:
Me thinks its time to open a bottle of wine!
and that’s a snazzy gift! Yep, open the bottle. Hope you have enough height on the shelf, or maybe it will be red wine.
I thought it was pretty clever. Using Star Wars action figures to make wine stoppers. I wish my brain worked that way.
Awww, that’s such a sweet song…and a Perfect gift. You have a very thoughtful lady 😀 Have a great Fathers Day.
Kelly: It is, isn’t it. I was very taken with it when I heard it for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It has been a really wonderful Father’s Day, and is continuing with episodes of Season 4 of Dr. Who. No complaints from me AT ALL!!! 🙂
Love your gift! But then Dads like you deserve a little spoiling now and then. Hope you all had a lovely day!!!
Debi: We have. I’m sad that it is soon coming to an end. I need to go to bed at a decent time so that I can stay awake Tuesday night for The Two Towers. LOL! I hope your family had a wonderful Father’s Day weekend.
Happy Father’s Day to you Carl!! That is one of the best gifts EVER that Mary got you 😀
I know Chris, isn’t it fantastic?!?! So perfect! Happy Father’s Day to your dad as well.
Great gift from Mary!
We had a relaxing day yesterday. I cooked out on the grill and we watched “The Spy Next Door” together.
After that we went to the pool for a couple of hours and splashed around.
It was a good day!
James, it is really a fun gift, isn’t it? Need to crack open a bottle of our vacation wine.
Sounds like you guys had a great Father’s Day. Glad to hear it! It was fun going to see Super 8 again. Wish I had read about some of the Easter Eggs in it before seeing it again though because there are all kinds of cool things to look and listen for, including the fact that Leonard Nimoy is in it somewhere.
