Friday Favorites: Everything Old is New Again

As the title of today’s post so coyly suggests, this Friday Favorite is a combination of something old (a few of my previous favorite Friday Favorites artists) with something new (wonderful new items from said artists that have mysteriously fallen into my possession).

Okay, I guess it isn’t so mysterious. Having a comic shop within spitting distance of the house is the reason. The only mystery is why they continue to let me hang out there every Wednesday!

So, come along with me and enjoy some new pieces from a couple of great artists that you may or may not have read about previously on my site and, if you stick with it until the end, you will be able to witness how artfully (pun intended) I tie these artists into the latest R.I.P. II Challenge giveaway!

Robots and Rockets and Rats, Oh My!!!

“It is never too late to have a happy childhood”
~Tom Robbins

Truth be told, I would have to amend the above quote and add the word ‘second’ between ‘happy’ and ‘childhood’, as I really enjoyed my first one. Actually I am still enjoying my first one! 😉

I like toys, and as I’ve matured into adulthood one of the more entertaining realizations that I have come to is that I can continue to like toys…and the toys I can afford now are much cooler.

I am not talking about the typical ‘guy’ toys, like cars and powertools, and trophy wives (although those are cool too!). No, I am talking about geek toys…robots and rayguns, replica Lord of the Rings swords and shapely Princess Leia statues.

Today I bring you some of the images of what was to be last Friday’s Friday Favorites post, all about one of my favorite things: toys!

Friday Favorite: Robert ParkeHarrison

“The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now.”
~Anonymous

“For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider, every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver.”
~Martin Luther

Many years ago, approximately 17 to be exact, my wife listened to the little hints I was dropping and bought me this wonderful book, The Architect’s Brother, featuring the photography of Robert ParkeHarrison that I had been eyeing with envy at my Waldenbooks job. I love that woman!

From Decordova: “Robert ParkeHarrison collaborates with his wife, Shana, on the conception and execution of complex images that combine performance, sculpture, photography, and painting. Their innovative approach to picture making draws upon their use of paper negatives and collage to construct stories of loss and struggle amid landscapes scarred by technology and over-use. At the heart of these pictorial tales is a lone individual–ParkeHarrison himself as “Everyman” engaged in Herculean struggles with nature and artifice. The mythic world he creates mirrors our world, where nature is domesticated and controlled. In actions that are both humorously metaphorical and lyrically poetic, ParkeHarrison constructs beguiling stories that make us consider what we have done or are doing to our earth.”

I fall pretty squarely in the middle on environmental issues most of the time. I see both sides using faulty, skewed statistics towards their own ends. That being said, I love this world. I love nature, and I love trees. As I see more and more of my favorite country drives to and from work being robbed of all vegetation to build big houses with no yards, I get very frustrated.

These images are all very powerful, and need no description by me to accompany them.

(The Sower)

Suffice it to say that I love this work. The combination of the things they construct for these pictures and the fact that the photographer himself appears in each one is just amazing to me. There is also a darkness and a steampunk element to many of these pictures that attracts me to them even more.

At the end of the book he includes the story Unchopping a Tree by W.S. Merwin. It was, I believe, part of his inspiration.

I give you now some examples of the work of Robert ParkeHarrison (each image can be clicked upon for a larger version), accompanied solely by the words of W.S. Merwin:

I Remember When…

(yours truly on a (low) tree branch, the Fountain of Youth, St. Augustine. photo by oldben, edited ever so slightly by Carl V.)

“Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art, like the universe itself (for God did not need to create). It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.”
~ C.S. Lewis

One year and one day ago today, on a Friday morning, I turned on my computer to discover that Jennifer, Jenn See, had passed away suddenly. Jenn See, one part of the triumvirate of the Following My Fish website, was a dear web friend. The Fish were the first people I discovered on my quest to turn my blog into a celebration of the more geeky things in my life. Reading the posts over there was like looking into the mirror of my soul. The year and a half that I spent reading the writings of Jenn See, Mysfit, and Oldben and their interactions with us over here, formed the kind of bond that at that time I never dreamed could be achieved from sitting at a keyboard. And then she was gone.

A Bundle of Friday Favorites

Certain is it that there is no kind of affection so purely angelic as of a father to a daughter. In love to our wives there is desire; to our sons, ambition; but to our daughters there is something which there are no words to express.
~Joseph Addison

I find two things hard to believe this fine Friday morning: the first, that it is already June. Who stole the first 5 months of 2007? The second, that my daughter, that sweet little goo-covered babe that came into our lives at 8:11 p.m. on the first day of June in 1992, turns 15 today!
