Friday Favorites: Spectrum 15

(Island #1, Cover image by Michael Whelan)

Though I read this for the first time in 2008, I could not think of a better way to inaugurate the Friday Favorites posts for 2009 than to do a brief review of the best art book to come out last year, Spectrum 15: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art, edited by Cathy and Arnie Fenner.

Year after year the Fenners pull together a panel of artists and people in the industry and they converge upon Kansas City to pick the entries for the latest volume of Spectrum. For 15 years now the Fenners have been putting together the most amazing collection of fantastic art illustration and though it seems like it would be impossible to do, they manage to top themselves every year.

Spectrum 15 is no exception. This large, high quality art book is filled with hundreds of pages containing hundreds upon hundreds of examples of amazing art from many different categories. It is a thrill every year when the latest issue of Spectrum comes out. For the past 3 years my friend Jeff and I have cracked into our copies together, pouring through it page by page and commenting on the various pieces. It is a real treat and one of the highlights of every year. By way of review, and to whet your appetite for future Friday Favorites, I am including a random sampling of images from Spectrum 15. These are all images that I like, but they do not even come close to representing the variety of images contained in this volume.

A Fabulous Melancholy: An Interview with Anne-Julie Aubry

(The Red Room)

Earlier in the year I had hoped to feature an interview with Anne-Julie Aubry but periods of heavy work on both sides of the world and the extra effort Anne-Julie has to make for translation from French to English meant that this had to be put off until another time. In my previous feature on the art of Anne-Julie Aubry I mentioned that she designates the art on her site under the categories of ‘dark’ and ‘whimsical’ and although I enjoy both I am more drawn to the darker, more melancholic art. In thinking about this it came to me that featuring her interview during the R.I.P. III Challenge couldn’t be more perfect, especially as it would give me an opportunity to showcase some of her latest work and review some favorite darker images.

In addition to sharing some of her thoughts with us Anne-Julie Aubry has graciously donated some items for a giveaway mentioned at the end of this post AND is offering a special deal for one week only for readers of this very post.

“A Fabulous Melancholy” isn’t a comment on the very sweet Anne-Julie Aubry, it is a statement of how her work makes me feel. Come along and see for yourself…

Painting the Last Rose of Summer

Robert McGinnis: Painting the Last Rose of Summer

–a film by Paul Jilbert
–2008
–5/5 stars *

I have long been a fan of the illustration work of artist Robert McGinnis. I did a very gushing, image-laden Friday Favorite post on him back in May of 2006 that can be found here. This is one of the posts that bears frequent revisiting–not because of anything that has to do with me but because of the handful of examples of Robert McGinnis’ phenomenal talent.

Needless to say I was excited when rumors of a Robert McGinnis DVD surfaced well over a year ago. And it has finally been released!

Friday Favorite: A belated goodbye to Michael Turner

Today’s Friday Favorite may seem a bit off the beaten path from my more recent artist features and yet it hearkens to one of my great loves, the comic book. In the mid to late 90’s when I was introduced to the world of ‘funny books for adults’ it wasn’t long before the work of Michael Turner began to catch my eye. Over the years I haven’t collected much of his work and yet I have always appreciated the unique look of his characters, particularly his female characters.

Michael Turner died on June 27th of this year from complications resulting from treatment for bone cancer. He was only 37 years old.

Though a bit late, I decided that it was the right thing to do to honor his memory with a Friday Favorite post.

Friday Favorites: Irisz Agocs

One of the things I love most about being able to present art via the Friday Favorites format is that it gives me an opportunity to share a variety of art styles, techniques, genres, mediums, etc. The internet is a fascinating place to discover artists and it feeds my fascination along the broad spectrum within which my interests lie.

Today I bring you something a bit different than more recent Friday Favorites. Allow me to introduce you to artist Irisz Agocs.
