Birthday Wishes

Happy Birthday to Captain Jack Sparrow and to Senator Padme Amidala!!!

Johnny Depp turns 42 today.

Natalie Portman has reached the ripe old age of 24!

Now we all know that celebrities have birthdays every day and I don’t post about all of them. Usually just my absolute favorites. I felt the need to post today, however, because not only is Depp one of my favorite male actors, but my sister Abby and my co-worker Pat are huge Johnny Depp fans so this one is for the two of you!

Depp is just fantastic. Finding Neverland, Chocolate, Pirates, Benny and Joon, Don Juan DeMarco, Sleepy Hollow…he’s just such a quirky, fun, and interesting personality. His movies in particular are ones I find myself watching over and over again. He’s obviously a very attractive man but I think that the bizarre roles that he plays makes him seem like more an everyman romantic lead. His movies contain an unconscious message about being true to yourself. At least that’s what I get out of them. That and the fact that quirky movies are by far my favorites.

And I had to include Ms. Portman because, of course, she was in Star Wars and I feel this perverse need to continue to throw Star Wars references in posts every few days! It will end soon, I promise! She is also a very good actress despite Ep. I and II.

Happy Birthday to you both and to any other June 9th birthdays out in the blogosphere. For you regular (and irregular) readers I’d like to honor you on your birthday, so if you want to post the date here or send me an email I’d appreciate it!

  1. Yes, it is true. Johnny has been a long time favorite of mine. At times throughout my life I have strayed to other fine looking male actors, but in time, I always find my way back. I have liked Johnny Depp every since I first saw him on 21 Jump Street. I remember staring at the VHS cover of the movie Cry-Baby at the movie rental store inside the Cinema III theatre in Norfolk.

His most handsome moment was in the movie, The Astronaut’s Wife. One of his most funniest moments was at the beginning of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas when he is “high” and being attacked by bats. I like him as an actor, not only b/c of his looks, but b/c the movies he plays in are always so different from one another. He has played some of the most unusual parts – a pirate, a writer who basically adopts 4 children, a psycho writer, a corrupt CIA agent who gets his eyes cut out, an inspector trying to find Jack the Ripper, a constable who investigates killings by a headless horseman, and on and on…………..

Thanks for the post Carl. It has given me ideas for more movies to add to Netflix.

  2. mmmmm….Johnny Depp. i’m ever so glad he exists.
but i’ll be damned if i can find any existing copies of 21 Jump Street:)

i still have a lot to say on the subject of natalie portman. i’ll get to it eventually…

  3. Jenn, the first 2 seasons are out on DVD and can be purchased through Amazon.com, etc. Amazon has them used starting at around $17.

The 3rd season comes out in August this year.

I’ll have to Netflix those sometime. I loved that show when it was on.

  4. Glad I read your post earlier…and Tom’s silly comments a few posts below…makes the joke much more funny!

  5. te amo, johnny. lol

and my dad’s birthday’s tomorrow.. but we’re just going to celebrate his bday on father’s day since he has to work late tomorrow anyway.

  6. Carl, which ones? Anyway, I have in the past been waiting for Johnny Depp to, for lack of better terms, “ripen”. I thought his early stuff was warm up, go along with the studio, establish himself. I guess that’s paying his dues. I read where he really studied Brando’s techniques and now he is at the place where he can command not only money, but the way his characters do everything. He strikes me as a little controlling. He also strikes me as being a great mentor if he feels you are worth it. Loved B@Joon, Gilbert Grape. Natalie P. used to look great, but I think now she’s a little slutty, maybe a little too willing to shock. I think a lot of hollywood is bored just looking for deeper identity. Sounds a little familiar to alot of people. I still can’t believe it’s her in “The Professional”.

  7. Benny at Joon…sounds like one of them “risque” flicks! All your comments are silly Tom, I can’t single out just one!

I don’t know, I’ve seen several pics of Natalie lately where she looks really elegant, and looks her age. She is dressing ‘sexy’ but I don’t know about ‘slutty’.

21 Jump Street may have been a warm up but I think almost every movie he’s made since that TV series has been stuff he wanted to do, very small time stuff, on purpose because he didn’t like all the big studio BS. Pirates was his first real blockbuster movie and I think he only did that because he could do it his way rather than the way someone else told him to do it. He is probably pretty controlling but it seems like a good thing. He’s one of the few actors who hasn’t done alot of stupid movies just for the money. Most of his “flops” have been very entertaining, well done movies that the general masses just don’t “get”. He’s an odd bird, no doubt, but it pays off in that I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a Depp movie in which I was disappointed with his performance.

Can’t wait for the Pirates sequels and the Tim Burton movie, The Corpse Bride, in Sept where Depp does the voice work for the main character.

  8. Not in any way do I swing in to the alternative zone, but your pics of J.D. make him look rather studly. I remember a time when a friend and I took pics of ourselves lifting weights in bikini underwear. It was hard to tell Depp and I apart.

  9. I can imagine…or better yet I can’t.. NO!!!! Burn those images out of my mind, PLEASE!!!!!

  10. Where are those pics, Babe? I would like to take a look at those now. I remember you used to keep them in your top drawer. Where’d they go?? 🙂

  11. I don’t know how comfortable I am knowing that Tom kept pix of himself in bikini underwear in his top (read underwear) drawer! 🙂

  12. Um, how do you know that drawer is his underwear drawer?

Tom, anything you’d care to admit to?

  13. Carl was wanting to know if I whore, um wore tiger striped or leopard, and just happen to guess they were in the top drawer. Next to my Michael Jackson tape.

  14. Because your dying to know. . .Tom’s underwear is NOT in his top drawer.

  15. Probably because its filled to the brim with pix of him in his Speedo.

  16. This is a little late because of time-warner, who doesn’t handle repairs well. thank you the Johnny site. It’s beautiful, as he is. I agree with you, Carl, I don’t think he ever played the studio game. He did it “his way”. which is why it took so long for him to be a major star – read money-maker. And I’m still in shock to discover my main passion has the same birthday as my father. My sister is still laughing over that.

  17. P.S. Who saw Ms. Portman in The Garden State. she was terrific in it. I was sorry it didn’t get more play here. To the glenwood and gone!
