Author Alex Scarrow on Publishing

2012BookWeekAlexScarrow

Over on SF Signal this weekend is an article that I edited as part of a series I am doing with author Alex Scarrow. You may be familiar with the name because of reviews I have done for his wonderful SF series featuring a spunky twenty-year old protagonist, Ellie Quin.

Alex Scarrow has a successful traditionally published series in the TimeRiders books, which my wife is currently enjoying, and he made the decision to self-publish the Ellie Quin series. In this article Alex Scarrow talks about that decision from both the positive and negative angles.

Those of you who are writers, or dream of being writers, should check this out, there is some very good information to be had from his experience thus far.

Spectrum Fantastic Art Live: The “E” List and The “F” List

(Loss by Edward Howard)

My alphabetical trip (by first name) continues with a look at the D list.

These artists are scheduled to be in attendance May 9-11 in Kansas City, MO at Spectrum Fantastic Art Live 3.

I offer the art without comment, as it can speak well enough for itself. Besides, I’d rather get your thoughts.

Under each piece is the name of the artist and a link to their respective website. Please consider giving them a visit to explore more of their work.

Come along, and enjoy!

The Macabre Imaginings of Abigail Larson

“I wanted to make drawings people could fall into.”

I first became aware of the work of Abigail Larson as I prepared to create art-centered articles showcasing the exhibitors attending Spectrum Fantastic Art Live 3, and was struck by the feeling that I should have known her work for much, much longer.

My early memories of solo adventures into the world of literature are populated with the pen and ink drawings of Edward Gorey, and whenever I sense a kindred spirit in another artist’s work, whether it exists or not, I feel a deep kinship with that artist.

Abigail Larson’s art elicits feelings of a beautiful melancholy that draws my gaze, and I cannot help but hear the siren call of fairytales and gothic stories that I have loved, and gotten lost in, throughout the whole of my reading life. Her illustrations encompass a broader fantastical landscape of which I am particularly fond, and she creates works that are deliciously eerie, while others are rich in the Romance present in engaging fantasy stories.

Abigail Larson has a signature style which pays homage to her influences, and I trust you will enjoy examples of her work as you listen in on an interview she was gracious enough to grant.

Kick Start the Art

I posted yesterday about a special Kickstarter project that is currently underway to fund a book produced by Flesk Publications that will be in part created by famed portrait photographer Greg Preston.

What may not have come across clearly is that this is an ART BOOK, and if you’ve ever held one of Flesk’s art books in your hands, you know they are a thing of beauty.

This will be a book featuring at least 50 artists that will include beautifully reproduced examples of their art, information about the artist, and an equally artistic photograph of the artist that will take place at Spectrum Fantastic Art Live 3 in one month’s time.

You do not have to attend Spectrum Fantastic Art Live 3 to get this book, or to enjoy this book, although it will be a very cool memory if you can both support the project and attend the show.

If you are like me, it is the tempting lure of gorgeous artwork that grabs your eye, and subsequently your cash. So to help both you, and me, get excited about this project, I have created a collage of art from the 31 artists who are already scheduled to participate. The remaining 19+ will be a surprise, but given the Spectrum Fantastic Art Live 3 guest list, this book is going to be a visual feast.

If you want to be tempted, take the plunge.
