Friday Favorite: Robert ParkeHarrison

“The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now.”
~Anonymous

“For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider, every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver.”
~Martin Luther

Many years ago, approximately 17 to be exact, my wife listened to the little hints I was dropping and bought me this wonderful book, The Architect’s Brother, featuring the photography of Robert ParkeHarrison that I had been eyeing with envy at my Waldenbooks job. I love that woman!

From Decordova: “Robert ParkeHarrison collaborates with his wife, Shana, on the conception and execution of complex images that combine performance, sculpture, photography, and painting. Their innovative approach to picture making draws upon their use of paper negatives and collage to construct stories of loss and struggle amid landscapes scarred by technology and over-use. At the heart of these pictorial tales is a lone individual–ParkeHarrison himself as “Everyman” engaged in Herculean struggles with nature and artifice. The mythic world he creates mirrors our world, where nature is domesticated and controlled. In actions that are both humorously metaphorical and lyrically poetic, ParkeHarrison constructs beguiling stories that make us consider what we have done or are doing to our earth.”

I fall pretty squarely in the middle on environmental issues most of the time. I see both sides using faulty, skewed statistics towards their own ends. That being said, I love this world. I love nature, and I love trees. As I see more and more of my favorite country drives to and from work being robbed of all vegetation to build big houses with no yards, I get very frustrated.

These images are all very powerful, and need no description by me to accompany them.

Suffice it to say that I love this work. The combination of the things they construct for these pictures and the fact that the photographer himself appears in each one is just amazing to me. There is also a darkness and a steampunk element to many of these pictures that attracts me to them even more.

At the end of the book he includes the story Unchopping a Tree by W.S. Merwin. It was, I believe, part of his inspiration.

I give you now some examples of the work of Robert ParkeHarrison (each image can be clicked upon for a larger version), accompanied solely by the words of W.S. Merwin:

Lost and Found

This is a new post, despite it having a similar Blue Poppet picture! 😉

No, the above picture doesn’t represent my feelings on not being as built as the guy in the picture! It represents my profound sadness of news that affects an author that we are all fond of, Colleen Gleason.

Yes, dear friends, Madame Gleason committed a grievous error…she signed a book “”Meghan–Happy Birthday!” The faux pas was that she signed the wrong book! And so, if you know anyone name Meghan with an upcoming birthday, you can get your name in the running for getting a free signed birthday gift! There is already one name in the pot over there, so act now!

And now for something completely different.

The Summer Of…

“Summer is the time when one sheds one’s tensions with one’s clothes, and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit. A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all’s right with the world.”

~Ada Louise Huxtable

And so we bid a fond, but sad, farewell to the Once Upon a Time Challenge. As it ends, thus ends Spring. Summer is upon us.

I have declared before that I am very much a whim reader. I tend to follow my fancies in reading, wherever they may lead. Hosting/participating in challenges causes me to try to reign in those whims and eventhough I thoroughly enjoy participating in challenges, it seems that books outside the challenge genre are never more attractive than when you’ve committed yourself to a specific reading regime! 🙂

I Remember When…

“Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art, like the universe itself (for God did not need to create). It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.”
~ C.S. Lewis

One year and one day ago today, on a Friday morning, I turned on my computer to discover that Jennifer, Jenn See, had passed away suddenly. Jenn See, one part of the triumvirate of the Following My Fish website, was a dear web friend. The Fish were the first people I discovered on my quest to turn my blog into a celebration of the more geeky things in my life. Reading the posts over there was like looking into the mirror of my soul. The year and a half that I spent reading the writings of Jenn See, Mysfit, and Oldben and their interactions with us over here, formed the kind of bond that at that time I never dreamed could be achieved from sitting at a keyboard. And then she was gone.
