Murakami… the name is and has been hot on the lips of internet book bloggers for some time now. In addition my friend Cameron has often sang his praises at our weekly comic shop gatherings. And yet I was reluctant. Partially because of the fear of reading his work and not being as impressed by it as many others have been. It is never pleasant to go tell someone that one of their favorite authors/books just didn’t do it for you. Never.

Yet honesty in book talk is highly valued and I would never feel good about myself if I didn’t tell it to you straight. Credibility and integrity must be prized. And so I stayed away from Haruki Murakami. Until last Thursday, that is…

Last September I wrote: ‘With obvious nods to several video games, films of unrepentant violence both old and new, and a staunch pro-vegetable stance, Shoot ‘Em Up is a guilty pleasure with a capital “G”.’ I went on to describe just how much I enjoyed this guilty pleasure film. Fast forward to Thursday, July 3rd 2008 (that would be rewinding now, wouldn’t it?), replace the ‘staunch pro-vegetable stance’ with ‘thinly-veiled anti-donut stance’ and add in ‘comic book inspired’ and you would have a good one line description of the film Wanted.

It was outrageous. It was violent. It was profanity laden. It was cathartic.

What more could a guy ask for?

Jan-Ai Day Three: An Interview with Rachael Direnna

Let me start today’s Jan-Ai Scholarship Drive post by apologizing both to the blog readers and the artists who agreed to participate in this week’s event. Blog problems earlier in the week followed by a Wednesday storm-related power outage have conspired to derail the plans I had for this week. Things seem to be in order now and so we are soldiering on. And thankfully the parts of this week I have been most excited about continue today: the interviews!

[As a reminder to those who may not know what the Jan-Ai Scholarship drive is all about, I refer you to this week’s opening post.]

You may remember the work of artist Rachael Direnna from her Friday Favorites feature back in April. Her sculptures are so unique and resonate so strongly with the part of me that enjoys nature, loves trees, etc. that I immediately asked her at that time if I might conduct a future interview with her. She graciously agreed.

Based on a statement in her answer to the first question, I am including some photographs that Rachael Direnna has taken as well as images of her creations. Although she has many photos on her Flickr site, I chose ones that either through her own manipulation or through happy accidents are very striking to me.

With no further ado, I give you Rachael Direnna:

Jan-Ai Day Two: An Interview with Jennifer Gordon

(Words and Pictures)

The Jan-Ai Scholarship Fund Drive week continues with an interview with recently featured Etsy Week artist Jennifer Gordon. In email conversations with Ms. Gordon I discovered that she was even more of a kindred spirit than her creations indicated and I promise you that you are going to enjoy this interview.

If you have not read yesterday’s post detailing what this week, and the Jan-Ai Scholarship Fund Drive is, please step away for a moment and read this.

And now, on with the interview:

Jan-Ai Scholarship Week: Day One, remembering Jenn See

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”
~Thomas Merton

One early Friday morning in June of 2006, the 23rd to be exact, I awoke early and posted a Friday Favorite on artist Greg Spalenka. I had long admired his art and was especially enamored of the image that I opened the profile with, his collage/painting Art Heart. I didn’t have any particular reason for choosing to feature Spalenka’s work that day, it just felt right. Little did I know how right that feeling would turn out to be.
