2009: A Literary Year in Review

“Too few people seem to realize that books have feelings. But if I know one thing better than another I know this, that my books know me and love me. When of a morning I awaken I cast my eyes about my room to see how fare my beloved treasures, and as I cry cheerily to them, “Good day to you, sweet friends!” how lovingly they beam upon me, and how glad they are that my repose has been unbroken”.
~Eugene Fields, The Love Affairs of a Bibliomaniac

In just a few days we will close the door on 2009, and as I gaze back upon the literary road that I have traveled I cannot help but feel that the journey has been a darn good one, a journey worth remembering, paved with stories that will be worth revisiting in the years to come.

Looking back upon a year of reading is, in my opinion, one of the most pleasurable experiences involved with being a blogger. I reminisce, I re-read posted reviews, and I dream about the adventures that the coming year will hold.

And so, without further gilding of the lily, here is a look back at my year of reading.

The Sci Fi Experience 2010

For my part I know nothing with any certainty,
but the sight of the stars makes me dream.

~Vincent Van Gogh

“Science Fiction as a genre and the art of reading have been inextricably linked together as far back as my earliest solo reading memories. It is a bond that the passage of time and my own growth as a reader has not severed. In fact it is quite the opposite. As my length of days stretch out before me I find the ties to my own past growing ever more strong and ever more important.”

~Carl V. Anderson

Perhaps it is the acme of narcissism to quote oneself, but as I reviewed last year’s Sci Fi Experience announcement, and perused this quote I had made during the inaugural Sci Fi Experience, it seemed appropriate to dust it off and roll it out again. The passion that birthed these words two years ago has not diminished with time. That star continues to burn quite brightly.

As the snow gently falls this Christmas morning and the temperatures steadily descend, the glow of a passion for winter reading of science fiction keeps me warm. It is that warmth that I hope to share with all who would join me this January and February. Not for another challenge, no…for an experience.

Advent Calendar Day 24: Christmas Fun

Once a year, like clockwork, Kailana and I come together to bring you the Virtual Advent Calendar post for Christmas Eve. Generally we try to do a little something to clear out the holiday planning cobwebs and hopefully bring a smile to your face. This year our minds have concocted:

The Strange Synopsis Christmas Movie Quiz

On each of our sites you will find a list of 10 movie synopses, each representing a Christmas/holiday film. To make things a bit easier, each list is followed by the answer pool, in random order. Each answer corresponds to one of the questions. You will find the answers to each quiz on the opposite site. So, the answers to Kailana’s Quiz are on Carl’s site and the answers to Carl’s Quiz are on Kailana’s site. Confused yet? Good! Take another swig of nog and lets begin.

Star Trek Vanguard: Harbinger ~David Mack

Star Trek Vanguard: Harbinger ~David Mack

–published 2005
–374 pages, Pocket Books
–4/5 stars

With the successful reboot of the Star Trek franchise this past summer, it was all I could do to restrain myself from diving head long into original series novels. Wanting to honor the reading I was currently involved in, I squirreled away that desire for another time. Watching the film again on DVD so close to the third annual Sci Fi Experience was just the excuse I required to unleash this hunger for some new adventures with old friends. And I knew just where I wanted to start–with the Vanguard Saga. Although the first novel ultimately does little more than set the stage, it does so with superb writing from an author who is obviously devoted to the franchise. If you are looking for some old school Star Trek with a new flair, your search is at an end.

The Journey that saved Curious George ~Louise Borden

The Journey that saved Curious George ~Louise Borden, illustrated by Allan Drummond

–4.5/5 stars

It was all about the monkey, long, long ago in a childhood far, far away. At least it was for me. Like many a young boy and young girl, that endlessly curious little trouble-attracting monkey was one of my childhood fixtures. If you were a reader, or were read to by your parents, there is a good chance that at least once in your life you went on an adventure with Curious George. I passed on the monkey mania by reading some of the books to my daughter when she was young. And all that time I was curiously un-curious about the creator of George’s exploits. That is until now.
