Once a year, like clockwork, Kailana and I come together to bring you the Virtual Advent Calendar post for Christmas Eve. Generally we try to do a little something to clear out the holiday planning cobwebs and hopefully bring a smile to your face. This year our minds have concocted:
The Strange Synopsis Christmas Movie Quiz
On each of our sites you will find a list of 10 movie synopses, each representing a Christmas/holiday film. To make things a bit easier, each list is followed by the answer pool, in random order. Each answer corresponds to one of the questions. You will find the answers to each quiz on the opposite site. So, the answers to Kailana’s Quiz are on Carl’s site and the answers to Carl’s Quiz are on Kailana’s site. Confused yet? Good! Take another swig of nog and lets begin.
1. A group of misfits, sequestered on an island because of society’s rejection of their nonconformity, is ultimately rescued by a hairy youngster with a facial deformity and a short guy with a tooth obsession.
2. Child with faith issues and a knack for chewing gum and blowing bubbles opens her heart to belief, thanks to a jolly old soul and a parade-sponsoring department store.
3. Man wakes up in strange bed, his suddenly acquired young daughter suspects he may be an alien sent to replace her real father. Spends time selling tires and longing for his former life of privilege. Realizes almost too late that a life spent with a cute and loving wife and a couple of adorable kids might just make living outside of New York City palatable. It’s all about second chances.
4. Anthropomorphic weather creation hangs out with a group of accepting, unquestioning young children, disobeys simple traffic laws, smokes, and generally has a grand time, so long as he stays away from fireplaces and that great yellow orb in the sky.
5. Green-skinned, skinny-legged “man” with a penchant for pork joins with a trio of spectral visitors to offer a chance at redemption to Batman’s butler. Warning: this film contains flying fish, singing vegetables, and some delightfully bad puns.
6. Woman procures fiancé courtesy of Chicago’s elevated train system. Joins loveable but wacky family for holiday celebrations. The only thing she wants more than the brother of her fiancé, who she has now fallen in love with, is a stamp from Italy in her passport.
7. Government official has hots for thick-thighed catering manager, old sex-obsessed rocker croons awful Christmas tune, man contemplates trist with secretary, best man in love with groom’s bride, young man finds true love (lust) in America, couple finds true love on the set of a porn flick, guy mourns premature death of spouse. Despite all of this and much more this is one darn good, uplifting Christmas tale.
8. A man who finds himself to be too big to fill the shoes that life dealt to him bids fair well to friends and family, and a narwhal, to travel to a magical land in search of his roots. He discovers that the yellow ones don’t stop, fake Santa’s smell like beef and cheese, and a little syrup makes everything taste a little better.
9. Boy and girl meet over musical cigarette box. Don’t get along. Correspondence occurs via the post office. Christmas approaches. Man loses job. Man gets job back when store owner attempts to end own life. Man discovers secret about girl and works to gain her affections. Extra hint: this film does not star Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
10. People are happy. They sing, the play, they dance. They are annoying and must be stopped, even if it means strapping antlers to a tiny defenseless puppy. Hearts are liable to expand upon viewing this film.
So there you have it. Now, as an aide, here are all the answers to the above synopses in random order. If you don’t know an answer, move on to the next. Perhaps process of elimination will help with the more obscure hints and/or films you are not as familiar with.
a. The Family Man
b. Elf
c. How the Grinch Stole Christmas
d. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
e. Love Actually
f. While You Were Sleeping
g. Shop Around the Corner
h. Miracle on 34th Street
i. Frosty the Snowman
j. A Muppet Christmas Carol
Just match ’em up to the summaries above.
Try your hand and then head over to Kailana’s site to check out her Quiz and to find out if your answers to my 10 questions were correct. Afterwards, head back over here to check out your answer’s to Kailana’s Quiz.
No fair peeking.
Before you check out Kailana’s answers below, allow me to wish you all a very Merry Christmas. In a very short span of time (1 week) I will be unveiling the post for the Sci Fi Experience 3, posting my Literary Year in Review, and posting thoughts on the year to come. This is one of my favorite times of year for blogging and for reading your blogs as well. My sincerest wishes for a delightful holiday go out to you and your family. God bless you all.

Oh, I don’t think I did very well on this quiz but now I want to see some of these – those synopsis sound good 🙂
Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas!
Dear Carl, as I am deplorable at recognizing films (perhpas I could pick out The Wizard of Oz if forced 😉 I will take a pass on your clever quiz. However, I’d never pass on wishing you Merry Christmas. Your friendship is hugely important to me in the blogging world; you’re one of the first friends I ever made here. You have enriched my life with expanding the ggenres I read, and the thoughts I think. Merry Christmas, many blessings, and thank you.
Merry Christmas, Carl! Have a lovely holiday.
Ooh! I matched them all up, but thought the Muppets and Elf descriptions were particularly challenging. Thanks for stretching the brain on this Boxing Day morning!
I am pretty happy that I did pretty well on both of our quizzes! lol
