“Photography is a kind of primitive theater, a kind of Tableau Vivant, a figuration of the motionless and made-up face beneath which we see the dead.”
~Roland Barthes
I promised I would show some of the contest entries coming in for the Something Sinister photo contest, which goes on until 11:59 p.m. on All Hallow’s Eve. If you don’t know the rules, or cannot recall them, click on the link and check them out…could possibly be the simplest rules of a contest ever! 🙂
“Photography deals exquisitely with appearances, but nothing is what it appears to be.â€Â
~Duane Michals
The opening image is my contribution to the Something Sinister pool. I hope it is fairly obvious exactly what is going on in this picture.
For those of you looking for a little inspiration and/or for those of you needing a kick in the proverbial pants, here a few examples of photos that I have received as entries. This is certainly not all of them, but a fairly representative mix. In no particular order:

Cats can be pretty damn scary when they want to be. This one is scarier than normal.
This is one creepy door, made even creepier by the eerie night time look of it. Trust me, that door is not one I’d want to open even in the light (click on the picture to see it in its ‘normal’ mode).

Here our contest entry is also by the work of an artist. That is some creepy painting talent.

Is it just me, or does this cat look like the cover to Varjak Paw? Very cool.

It simply wouldn’t be sinister without some Poppets in the mix!

I love the title for this image: Books Can Be Dangerous. I would love to visit that cemetery.

That one was just plain fun.

Doesn’t this cat look like it has a set of those fake Dracula teeth in? Hilarious!

I’ve got to hand it to you, there are some really fun entries coming in! (Sorry, it seemed like the proper place for a bad pun).
Well there you go, a few examples to get you started. Remember, email your image, or images, to cvincent68@comcast.net. Get snapping!

Oh wow…great photos everyone! Carl, I REALLY loved yours!
Those photos are really creepy! I love the cat with Dracula teeth.
Your contribution photo is really cool but very creepy. The 1st cat photo reminds me of Sunshine — evil!
May I ask if that was my darling granddaughter in your picture?
Love all the photos
Cool pics – I’ll try and see if I can contribute one!
I wrote the #3 entry – even though it says anonymous!!
Yes, Mom, that WAS your darling granddaughter in the first picture….Bwahaha…
Dan, please do enter!
Yours is awesome, Carl! VERY spooky!
These are all great, but where IS that cemetery?
These are awesome! More, I want more! Great job everyone…I love your shot Carl…very cool 😉
Salem, MA, isn’t it Janet?
Argh! I am so upset!! I want to be out taking pictures!!! waaaaaaaaah!

haha! those are really good!
i LOVE the door one! thats my favourite! very scary indeed…!
I like your photo, Carl! The one with the ivy is really great!
I was trying to think of “something sinister” to photograph. Maybe it should be the look on my face when everyone turns up their nose at the food I’ve prepared for dinner. . . now that’s sinister!
The girls have decided to be cats for Halloween. They are going to be a litter!
What an amazing array of art! Some of them really catch me in my stomach, akin to the feeling I get when I’ve dared to enter a haunted house. You have a clever following, Carl.
My word, these are fantastic! I’m so glad I haven’t missed the deadline. I do have an idea….just I just have to (heh) execute it!
How sick am I? I saw this and went: BRAVO!!!!! This picture screamed at me, and I screamed back. Evocative, subtle, outrageous.
These are wonderful. I enjoyed seeing everyone’s interpretation of scarey/ Great!
