UPDATE: The Answers are up at Kailana’s site!
For those of you playing along at home, you may or may not be aware that this month Kailana and Marg have been hosting their Blog Advent Calendar 2007. Kailana and I are splitting today, December 24th. Christmas Eve.
We have decided to join forces and put your knowledge of Christmas to the test. Since our magical number is 24, we have each come up with 12 questions to see how well-versed you are in elf culture. My 12 questions test your knowledge of Christmas movie classics, both old and new.
To reduce the temptation to skip ahead, I have placed the answers to my 12 movie quotes on Kailana’s blog, after the jump. See how many you can guess without using the internet! 😉 You will find the answers to Kailana’s 12 questions after the jump on my blog. What could be more simple?
So here I have assembled some of my favorite one-liners and snatches of dialogue from favorite Christmas films. Though they may not all be easy, I can assure you that these are quotes that I really enjoy from said films, not just the most obscure ones I could find just to give you a brain freeze. Good luck!
1. “And his best idea is about a peach that lives on a farm.
What’s more vulnerable than a peach?”
2. “But I don’t understand. Why are you doing this? I mean, what’s in it for you?”
“Forty-five minutes all to myself.”
3. “You used up all the glue…on purpose!!!”
4. “Why don’t you kiss her instead of talking her to death?”
“You want me to kiss her, huh?”
“Ah, youth is wasted on the wrong people.”
5. “All I want is what I… I have coming to me. All I want is my fair share.”
6. “A little flirtation is harmless but you’re dealing with fire here. The fidelity bank and trust is a tough creditor. You make a deposit somewhere else, they close your account – FOREVER!”
7. “I hate toys! And toys hate me! Either they are going or I am going and I definitely am not going!”
8. “Fog’s as thick as peanut butter.”
“You mean pea soup.”
“You eat what you like and I’ll eat what I’ll like.”
9. (This is a longer one and it kind of gives it away, but it is a favorite)
“Because a little thing can effect them. A slight disorder of the stomach can make them cheat. You may be a bit of undigested beef, a blob of mustard, a crumb of cheese. Yes. There’s more gravy than of grave about you.”
” More gravy than of grave? “
” What a terrible pun. Where’d you get those jokes? “
“Leave comedy to the bears…”
10.
“So what’s this big news, then?”
“We’ve been given our parts in the nativity play. And I’m the lobster. ”
“The lobster? ”
“Yeah! ”
“In the nativity play?”
“Yeah, *first* lobster.”
“There was more than one lobster present at the birth of Jesus? ”
“Duh. “
11. “These mashed potatoes are so creamy….Mary mashed them…”
12. (And the one that we all will be quoting as we lay our heads on our pillows tonight)
“I believe… I believe… It’s silly, but I believe.”

And the answers to Kailana’s questions, found on her site are:

For those of you in the United States who were outdoors last night at midnight under a cloudless sky, you might have seen one of the most amazing full moons this year. It just so happens that when I came in to look this up online, last night’s moon was the Long Night Moon, so named because the earlier darkening skies and low trajectory of the moon keep it in view for an extended period of time. We noticed the full moon around 5:00 p.m. yesterday evening and the picture above was taken at 7:30 a.m. this morning.
At midnight last night the moon was directly overhead. It was positioned almost exactly on the club end of Orion (click here for visual). Despite being amazing in and of itself, its proximity to Orion (my favorite constellation) and the fact that Mars was directly in front of it as it was being swatted by Orion. It was amazing. Despite the chilly night temps I went out a few times to just gaze at it. Needless to say I was thrilled to see her still around this morning when I awoke.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas Eve! Take some time tonight to look up into the night sky to see if you can see that star of wonder, star of night (or at the very least check out Mars taking Luna for a walk). As you drift off to sleep on this magical night, I wish you visions of sugar plums dancing in your heads and the pitter-patter of eight tiny reindeer on your rooftop.
Wow, apparently I’m clueless about movies. I get number 6 and number 12…the rest is a mystery to me.
I hope you have a lovely holiday.
Off hand, I got 4, 5, and 9. I guess that says a lot where my priorities are. 🙂 Merry Christmas!
I’m sure you are not clueless, Suzanne. You probably just don’t obsessively watch movies like my family does. 🙂
That’s a wonderful idea you and Kailana had! What a splendid way to end the Calender.
I’m afraid I only guessed 4 and 12, though. It’s been way too long since I’ve watched most of those movies.
A wonderful Christmas for you and your family, Carl!
And while you may find my quiz hard, Kailana’s is much easier. And fun too!!!
On mine, number three should be a given that any good Christmas movie watcher should know! I’m disappointed. 😉
Merry Christmas to all!
Thanks Carl for all the great quotes to movies I guess I need to see because I only know numbers 4 and 10. I hope you’re still willing to hang out with me from time to time considering my lack of movie knowledge. 🙂
I didn’t get very many, but it was still great fun! And I did get #10 about the lobsters – love that quote! 😀
Great quotes, Carl! Just obscure enough that one would have had to watch the movie more than once to remember them. I got all but #8, which I remembered hearing before, but couldn’t quite place. Of course, being your wife, I have watched all of these movies numerous times over the years.
I got a little over half of Kailana’s. What a fun Christmas Eve Day quiz!
P.S. Carl gave me a hint for #8 and then I got it. 🙂
I missed the moon last night. Thank you for the photo to make up for it. 🙂
I was able to guess some of the movies, but not all. Unfortunately there were several movies I haven’t yet seen, so it wasn’t all that surprising, I guess. That was a fun quiz just the same! I’m off to Kailana’s site to take her quiz.
I couldn’t see the moon last night, but I did drive home through the most amazing fog! It felt more like Halloween then Christmas! You see, it rained here last night and lots of the snow was melting, and in patches, thick fog drifted quietly and stealthily across the road…
Merry Christmas, Carl!
I am the WORST trival person in the world! ARGH! gimme a break! lol lol
but i think i got even, a little.. I emailed you something to figure out!
I hope you and your family that the absolute best Christmas ever!.. well.. until next year and then I’ll wish you the same thing again!
OK, all I got was # 4 and 12 :p But it was a lot of fun trying to figure them out! Great post!
Merry Christmas to you, Mary, Tori and Charlie! Hope it’s a great one spent making wonderful memories!
Have a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
(That number 8 is nagging at me! I know I know it…)
Ok, I’m going over to Kailana’s in a bit to check out the answers but I have the feeling I didn’t do too well!
Anyway, cute Poppet pic! I still want one of those.
Hope you have a wonderful Christmas! Wishing you lots of joy.
Huh, I was terrible at this too, but it was fun!
Merry Christmas, Carl!
How is it that no one can remember one of the most infamous lines from A Christmas Story, #3, after she broke his “Major Award”, the sexy leg lamp? I weep for the future of the world…
Nice moon photo. Looks “professional.”
Have a great holiday!
Well I got 4, 7, and 8 right!
Have a lovely Christmas Carl! All the best to you and your family! (And on the news last night they said that Mars was visible, too–close to the moon–wild!)
Great idea for your Advent posts!
Thanks so much for participating, and Merry Christmas to your and your family!
Yay. When I was reading the questions last night I was clueless to the answers and I was afraid it would be just me, so I am glad I am not the only one that did not get all of Carl’s quiz!
Merry Christmas!
Fun quiz…but what does it mean if I got ALL of them wrong? Though some of these lines were hilarious.
All it means is that you don’t watch Christmas movies as obsessively as my family does, Carolyn! Ha! We are famous for quoting lines, and not just Christmas movie lines, at each other all the time, day in and day out. Film is a big part of our family.
Merry Christmas Carl!
Same to you Chris. I’m going to shoot you an email if I don’t here from you soon. I need your address again to send the prize you won for the R.I.P. Challenge.
Well, better late than never…how fun! But I’m afraid I did pathetically…only knew #1 and #4. Though others definitely “ran bells”. (#4 is one we tend to quote liberally around here.)
Forgive my idiocy…I meant #3, not #4.
Debi: Finally, someone who knows an iconic line from A Christmas Story!!! 😉
You have no idea how badly I’ve wanted to buy Rich “the lamp”…only problem with that is that he’d probably want it in our front window…
I just heard this year that they have those lamps. I’m really going to have to think about picking one of those up. As it is with many other families, A Christmas Story is a huge part of our family traditions.
