A Chilly Turkey Day

Thanksgiving Day is a jewel, to set in the hearts of honest men;
but be careful that you do not take the day, and leave out the gratitude.

~E.P. Powell

There is no sincerer love than the love of food.
~George Bernard Shaw

As unfathomable as it seems, today is indeed Thanksgiving Day! A day of feasting and fellowship (and football!!!) for those who celebrate it.

Allow me to wish you a joyous day of thanksgiving whether you are celebrating today or not. I am certainly thankful for many things, not the least of which are the wonderful friendships afforded me through the blogging community. Thank you all so very much for the many ways in which you enrich my life and make me a better person. Thank you also for the wonderful birthday wishes expressed to me yesterday. If you have not seen pics of my amazing birthday cake, make sure you drop down to the post below this one and check it out.

It has been an unchallengeable American doctrine that cranberry sauce, a pink goo with overtones of sugared tomatoes, is a delectable necessity of the Thanksgiving board and that turkey is uneatable without it.

We got our first snow of the season, such as it was, yesterday. As much as I complained about the bitter cold and the sudden drop from 70 degree temps to 30 degree temps, this is indeed the kind of weather that puts me in the proper holiday spirit, so a bit of snow was a nice birthday present to me.

Thanksgiving, man. Not a good day to be my pants.
~Kevin James

More than anything I am looking most forward to a four day weekend. Just what I need to rest up for the week ahead, a week of paperwork review and scrambling to get ready for our big state audit…the second visit from people in less than a month. The holiday season will truly begin once the first week of Dec. passes and work can get back to just being the ‘normal’ stressful time. 😉

Thanksgiving is an emotional holiday. People travel thousands of miles to be with people they only see once a year. And then discover once a year is way too often.
~Johnny Carson

I wish all of you the very best this day and this weekend. Again I want to say ‘thank you’ to you for all you do and ‘thank you’ to God for giving me the blessing of the relationships we share. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Thou hast given so much to me,
Give one thing more, – a grateful heart;
Not thankful when it pleaseth me,
As if Thy blessings had spare days,
But such a heart whose pulse may be Thy praise.

~George Herbert

  1. And a Happy Thanksgiving to you too! Those pictures are beautiful. It’s chilly here, but no snow. It would be a miracle if it snowed in November in New Orleans! Enjoy Y’alls day enjoy the turkey!!

  2. Happy Thanksgiving!

I often feel that we Brits could do with a Day of Thankfulness, too.

Ace quotations: George Herbert is one of my favourite poets.

  3. You call that snow? :p Up here if we see that we just shrug and carry on with the day. 🙂 Truth be told, my first snowfall was a storm that knocked out power to many residences. I am waiting for the second snow for the pretty qualities. Last time I lost power in November it ended up being for three days, not fun!

    Anyways, Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. Happy Thanksgiving! Lucky you to have cool temps…it’s supposed to reach 60 here today…which normally I’d love but with all the cooking and the oven on…eek!

  5. those are beautiful photos.

the cold weather has also set in here. we don’t get snow too often here, but when we do i am always excited – i always feel that it is a sort of “reward” for the cold, as if it is saying, “yes, it is indeed that cold that it is now snowing”. because, if it doesn’t snow then you can’t really say that it is very cold (if you know what i mean…).

did your football team play today? did they do well?

  6. Happy Thanksgiving! We got a few flurries here, too. We braved the flakes and took the dogs for their hike this morning and then came home to hot apple cider. Yum! Now, on to the showcase of the day.

  7. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

JP – The Chiefs don’t play until this Sunday. We need a win bad so keep your fingers crossed for us. Sorry to hear about England losing the soccer match recently. I was very surprised to hear that and felt bad for your country. They said the coach might be getting fired over the loss. On a happier note my University of Kansas football team is actually ranked higher than USC this year. We have a 11-0 record going into this Saturday’s game against our most hated rival the University of Missouri who are 10-1 this year. Go Jayhawks!

  8. Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

Happy Birthday, Carl! It sounds like it was another good one! Enjoy your nice long weekend!

  9. Are you kidding? Snow? I stopped by your blog from Debi’s when I noticed you are in K.C. We are right outside of K.C. ourselves…I am just bummed b/c we left town for Thanksgiving and I missed our first snow! Ah well, hopefully there will be more to come!

  10. That is cool Kara, where ‘right outside of K.C.’ are you? We live in Blue Springs ourselves.

Kailana, that is why I said first snow, such as it was, because it wasn’t much. It did look pretty on stuff, but was mostly gone today.

Well, I survived another Thanksgiving. Kept the overeating down to a more normal pattern of eating and finally got off the losing end of the family football game. I’ve been on the losing team for many years in a row and managed to be on the winning team today, yay!!! And because I’ve been doing some serious walking for the last month and a half with the dog I am not near as sore as I usually am afterwards. Make no mistake, I’m still sore, but just not as severe. We’ll see what the morning brings!

It is supposed to warm up a bit here this weekend, which is good as I have 3/4 of the Christmas lights still to put up. It was weird to turn on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade this morning and see 56 degree temps in NYC at the same time it was in the upper 20’s here. Very odd.

  11. Happy Thanksgiving–and Happy Birthday! I envy you your “light” snowfall. If there are 2 days out of the year when there SHOULD be snow on the ground, they are Thanksgiving and Christmas.

  12. i’ll definitely have my fingers crossed, jeff! i had a look at the table and i see that the raiders are bottom of the table at the moment – so hopefully you guys will be able to beat them!

thankfully, i’m not english, so england not making it doesn’t bother me too much. i’m south african and my father was french, so my loyalties lie towards south africa and france. in football its france, because of them being european and their style of play being the style that i grew up playing and watching – which is distinctly different from the style of african football, which south africa play.

the jayhawks are rated above usc! wow! thats cool! i hope you they beat missouri then – theres nothing that i hate more than losing to a big rival!!

  13. Wonderful pictures, Carl. Isn’t it amazing how beautiful a single leaf looks with a bit of snow on it. Two football games this weekend that I am most anxious to see. So sorry, Jeff. I’ll be rooting for Mo. I can’t tell you how many family members are graduates from there and are fanatics about it. I’d be drummed out of the family if I wasn’t for Mo.

  14. Carl, tell Jeff that my uncle Ed needed for Mizzou to win. However, being a genuinely kind person he arranged for Kansas to get those last two touchdowns so they wouldn’t feel totally demoralized. And how sweet that we’ll both be rooting for the same team today!

  15. Pat, Well since your Uncle Ed needed for Mizzou to win then by all means I’m happy we could make it happen for him. 🙂 If we hadn’t missed those first half field goals then what a finish it really would have been. I will be cheering for Mizzou to beat Oklahoma. I can’t stand the Big 12 south division.

JP – We dropped the big game to our rival yesterday 36 to 28 and USC won yesterday so I imagine when the new rankings come out today both teams will be quite close to each other now. As for the style differences between French and South African football what would you say is the main difference. I’m just curious.

  16. oh no, jeff! bugger. sorry your team lost…

i think the main difference is probably that which distinguishes most african teams from european teams, in that african teams tend to be a lot more physical and dynamic and often focus on individual skill, whereas european football is technical and tactical and focuses on teamwork.

  17. Nah…my husband is actually a K-State fan and I went to school in Wyoming, so there weren’t many tears for KU around here!

  18. There certainly is alot of weeping and gnashing of teeth over here on the Missouri side with the big controversy on who gets to go to what Bowl games. Makes me glad I am a born and raised Nebraska fan eventhough we’ve been on the down slide for awhile now.
