The weather is absolutely fantastic here today, spring is definitely in the air. Unfortunately it is one of those typical Mondays where the weather is beautiful and I have to work all day. So, to bring a little joy into my own day, and hopefully yours, here are a few bits of good news:

For those of you who took my advice and saw Night Watch when it came out in the theatres or on DVD, you have no doubt been anxiously awaiting film two in this Russian fantasy/horror/sci fi trilogy (and if you haven’t taken my advice, you really should. 🙂 )
Well my friends, the wait is over. Fox Searchlight has announced a June 1st theatrical release. The very cool trailer can be seen here (give it a bit to load).

The April issue of Estella’s Revenge is out today. Rush on over here to check it out. There is a treasure trove of great stuff in this ‘zine that is all about books, including an article about comic books, book-related film news, several book reviews, and many other articles and columns having to do with our one shared love: reading.

For those of you not tired of the Stardust movie which began last week, Chris over at Stuff as Dreams pointed out this article with screenwriter Jane Goldman. Quoting Chris:

And to finish up this fantasy-oriented news Monday, we now have 46 readers signed up for the Once Upon a Time Challenge! That is so great! I have some fun things planned for the week, so keep checking back and keep signing up! Early book reviews are already coming in and I hope to have a centralized way to track that coming up soon.
Update: If you review books for the challenge, or do any other challenge related post, please let me know in the comments section. Here, at the Once Upon a Time post, or anywhere for that matter.
Thanks again everyone for your participation. Happy Monday!
That Day Watch thing is one scary poster…
But happy Monday to you nonetheless! 🙂
Hmmm, I haven’t seen Night Watch although I do recall you mentioning it. May have to look that one up, since the poster for Day Watch looks errr, delightfully disturbing!
Happy Monday to you too Carl, don’t work too hard! Look forward to seeing what you have in store for the rest of the week. 🙂
Happy Monday Carl!
Thanks for the mention. Still a little leary about what they do to Tristran’s origins, but hopefully all will be good.
I haven’t even heard of Nightwatch. I’ll definitely have to check it out.
Can’t wait to see what’s in store for the week! You’re really good at this challenge thing.
Night Watch…and I assume Day Watch…is not quite as disturbing as the poster would indicate. It is a dark fantasy, though and one that I think you would like, Elaine.
No problem, Chris. Glad to see the interview although I have the same fears that you do. Its going to be really sad if Tristan’s origins are sacrificied because of the time limitations of the film.
Happy Monday to you as well Anne!
I’m definitely going to pop Night Watch on my Lovefilm list then. 🙂
Hope you like it, Quix. It is different, but I really enjoyed it.
You mentioned book reveiws coming in. Do you want us to let you know when we finish one? If so, I have a reveiw of Hat Full of Sky on my blog. Absolutely delightful.
Yes, I would. Thanks BL!
Carl? I’m in for the challenge, though I’ll need to think a bit about what my list’s going to be. Thanks for the thoughts. I need something to cheer me up right now, and if an excuse to buy some new books can’t do it, then nothing can!
I must remember to post the results, though. I completed the Classics Challenge back in February, and never actually posted a word about it.
Anonymous…who are you?!?!?
Happy Monday to you. And this Monday was a drag, but a good one; I had two clients show up. Thank heavens I took my first Challenge book with me.
I finished one book the New Policeman and posted comments on my blog about two days ago 🙂 I may be adding books: I found a copy of King of the Middle March by Kevin Crossley-Holland and I’ve almost read all of Catherine Jinks’ Pagan series (Monty Python meets a young Marty Feldman)***CV
Carl, the review for my first read is here…. http://goldenflask.blogspot.com/2007/03/escape-with-me.html
Just say that Daywatch, the book has hit the book shops so was wondering about the film. Love the poster.
Hmm. Wonder if “Day Watch” will make it to theaters around here. I had to wait for the DVD to see its predecessor.
My first review for the challenge was posted Sunday…
And I finished Blood Price the other night, but I’m still letting it soak in before writing a review.. Trying to figure out how I feel about it.
Carl – I read your email on my phone (all outside email is blocked on my computer at work)… To answer your question, I use Mister Linky’s Widgets: http://www.blenza.com/linkies/wizard.php
It’s free to sign up and use the premade widgets. But I know membership is really cheap to create your own.
I’m over there but I can’t seem to get it to work. Essentially what I want is that Auto-link section at the bottom of the Thursday Thirteen post to use for a place for folks to enter the links to their book reviews for the Once Upon a Time Challenge. Whenever I paste the code into a post it doesn’t turn out right.
Did you put the right(first) code into your header?
The 2nd script generated is what you put at the bottom of your post.
Since I’m doing the free wordpress it won’t let me do that part of the code into the header…at least not that I can figure out without paying.
Jason watched that first film, but I was nowhere near it. I know he’ll want to see this one too, but like many other films this year (300, GrindHouse), I will declare it a great candidate for “boy’s night”.
I loved Nightwatch..it was trippy…
Can’t wait for the Daywatch one…
Don’t know the Stardust
Hello Carl..
I know I don’t comment but I do read your blog! Since your challenge began I’ve been waiting and hoping someone would read some young adult books that I read by Cornelia Funke called Inkheart and Inkspell. Inkheart is already in production for a movie with Brendon Frazier, Helen Mirren and Andy Serkis in it… it was such a good read, even for an old fart like me that I hope someone else reads them and gives their thoughts on the books. If you haven’t heard of them .. it’s a must that you check into them. It’s so nice when a young adult book can entertain any age.. and of all things… the books are about.. “books”!
These are ones on my list, Deslily, of books I want to get to and I know I’ve seen them on the list of others who are doing this challenge. Keep an eye on the book review site and you’ll probably see some reviews for those books…in fact there is an Inkheart review there right now. Thank you so much for reading, even if you don’t comment often. I really do appreciate it.
Hello Carl:
Well, these books are for young adults, and not everyone would like to read them because of that. I’m sure the fact that they’ve made a movie from Inkheart will drive up the readers though. Originally, I got the first book because I saw that Andy Serkis was going to be in the movie. But I am a character oriented person and she quickly drew me in to reading the second book and even reading some of her other young adult books… she’s an excellent story teller! I hope you enjoy them when you get to reading them.
True, but I think alot of people who are no longer young adults (except at heart) read YA fiction. Some of my favorite books are YA and a better part of my book reviews have been YA. Certainly many of the books that fit into the challenge category are, or started out as, YA fiction.
I’m pretty sure my wife has read the two Funke books. I’ll have to ask her about that. They are very appealing looking every time I see them in the store!
They sure are! And strangely enough, the feel of the cover is nice too!
Cover art can be so important.. if it strikes you in the right way you will pick up the book and at least read enough to find out what the book is about!
In things I’ve read it sounds like the publishers choose the artist for the books they will publish. I think I’d want to choose the artist, since I feel it’s so important! I am thankful there are many good ones out there though!
Its definitely important to be published by someone who has a good art director, that’s for sure. I feel sorry for authors who toil away writing a book only to have it published with a terrible cover.
