Tripping through the Internet

(White Angel by Jason Chan)

On this glorious Tuesday morn come away with me as we visit a variety of sites of which I have recently been made aware.

The first is the blog site of the Art Director for Tor Books, Irene Gallo. Over the years Tor Books has published some of my favorite science fiction and fantasy. As Art Director, Irene Gallo is privileged to work directly with some of the very best book cover artists alive today, many of which have already been featured as Friday Favorites. Her blog features regular mini-interviews with both established and up and coming artists, including examples of their work. It is like Friday Favorites with the artists’ actual participation. Her latest interview was with the artist of the work featured above, Jason Chan. I encourage you to check out his site. One of her recent posts is about digital art vs. art made with traditional media and it is very interesting.

The newest edition to my list of favorite authors, John Scalzi, has a very fun blog: Whatever. Though obviously written in a different voice than the well-planned, edited voice of his novels, it is still very easy to see his sense of humor come through. I get a chuckle out of reading his daily posts. In addition he regularly discusses books, offers writer advice, etc. One of the most entertaining posts I have come across while touring his site is: 10 Things Teenage Writers Should Know About Writing. I found it both wildly entertaining and filled with good advice for anyone who is writing or thinking about writing, whether you are a teenager or a teenager at heart.

A recent edition to the blog list is Neth Space. Like many of my blog links, Ken is a book blogger. His focus is predominately on science fiction and fantasy but he does read and review other types of novels as well. One of his recent posts that is generating discussion concerns George R.R. Martin’s Song of Fire and ice series being picked up by HBO for the small screen treatment. Neth laments the fact while others have various opinions. Definitely worth a read if you have any opinion at all about beloved books being brought to life in film.

For fans of genre television, film, books, etc. here is a site you might not be familiar with: Revolution SF. I have only just begun to sample offerings on this site but so far I have found the movie reviews to be very well written and entertaining. The reviews on Eragon, though a bit tougher on the film than I would have been, reflect some of my disappointment in this book-to-film conversion.

Last but not least on this Tuesday Tour is the site Stuff As Dreams Are Made On. Chris’ site has a dual draw for me as he too is a science fiction and fantasy fan but is also in the mental health field. While he is only at the beginning of his journey in the helping profession and I am much farther along, his posts about work bring back many fond memories from when I was first starting out. For those of you lucky enough to have gotten in on Masterpiece Theatre’s Jane Eyre this past Sunday, Chris discusses the MT season here.

Well, that’s all folks! Hope you enjoyed this Tuesday tour and that you have a fantastic day.

  1. George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Ice series on television? Doesn’t seem possible to me, but will check out that link. I waited YEARS for each new volume. He isn’t one to rush into print, at least with this series.

  2. I am assuming they are talking about television although I guess HBO has done some film work, right?

  3. More blogs to add to the Reader 🙂

I caught Jane Eyre a while back when it was on the Beeb. Was enjoyable, looked great.

  4. I had a nose at Irene Gallo’s blog yesterday or the day before, after seeing one of her comments here. All very interesting!

Had a peek at Jason Chan’s site – I recognised his style, possibly from the WoW related work he has done.

Have also been enjoying Neth Space since you last mentioned it. The George RR Martin related post was a very thought provoking one, I found.

You are right re. HBO I believe. I heard that each season will be dedicated to one of the books. I haven’t actually read any of the series yet – they have been on my “to read list” for ages, and I only ordered the first book from amazon a few days before reading this news! Hee.

  5. Nice! I’ve already spent too long filling in today’s meme, but I think I’ll have to put some of these up as linkage tomorrow…

  6. Thanks for the referrals 😉 You may end up becoming an online mentor of sorts to me when it comes to the counseling profession 🙂

  7. Oh Lord Chris, lets hope you don’t get that desperate! 😉

  8. Mr Martin says the plan right now is to devote a season to each of the books in the series. He stated on his blog that season one would focus on A Game of Thrones and would run 12 episodes. I’m happy to hear it’s going to be HBO because that’s they only place I believe the producers will get free reign to be faithful to the series. I highly recommend it. An all time favorite series of mine.

  9. What great food for thought and additions to my book wish list. Jane Lindskold sounds interesting since she writes about wolves. I used to love it when kids would ask me if my dog was a wolf. And that is an incredibly good review of Children of Men on Revolution SF. I think I left that movie in shock it was so convincingly done.

  10. How neat that the art director at Tor has a blog/site! Thanks for finding it for us. (And love Chan’s painting too.)

Thanks for the link to Scalzi’s blog and the post for teen writers, too. I have a few people I’m going to direct to that…..

    Wonderful post as usual.

  11. Carl, I love the covers that TOR has done for Wheel of time but have you seen the HORRIBLE job they did with the accompaniment. Every time I am about to buy that book I hesitate because of the atrocious art. Thanks for the links – am heading to check out the GRR Matin post pronto!!

  12. That’s the thing about any book company though Nessie…for every great cover there is probably one that isn’t up to snuff, at least in someone’s opinion.

Glad you enjoyed the writing article Colleen. It really is great for both its intended audience and for anyone else who wants to write.
